About DSA (Direct School Admission)
Direct School Admission (DSA) is an MOE-administered pathway that allows students to gain early admission to secondary schools and junior colleges based on talents and achievements beyond academic results. For families considering Art DSA, the process centres on building a compelling visual portfolio and performing well in school-specific selection exercises.
DSA is competitive — each school sets its own selection criteria and may conduct trials, auditions, interviews, or portfolio reviews. Understanding what each school looks for is critical to a successful application.
- Portfolio building: Our 27+ articles include step-by-step guides for creating an art portfolio that demonstrates range, technical skill, and creative thinking — the three qualities selectors look for most.
- School selection strategy: Students can apply to up to three schools for DSA-Sec. Choosing schools that align with both the student's strengths and long-term interests maximises the chances of a good fit.
- Interview preparation: Many schools include an interview or creative task as part of DSA selection. Articles in this hub cover what to expect, how to discuss your art confidently, and common questions asked during DSA interviews.
Whether your child is in Primary 5 starting to plan ahead or in Primary 6 preparing applications, this hub provides the practical guidance you need at every stage.

Frequently Asked Questions
DSA (Direct School Admission) is an MOE initiative that allows students to seek admission to secondary schools or JCs based on talents such as art, sports, music, or leadership. According to MOE, all Primary 6 students who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents can apply for DSA-Sec. Students may apply to up to three schools.
An effective DSA art portfolio typically includes 8 to 12 pieces showcasing a range of mediums and subjects. According to schools offering the Art Elective Programme (AEP), selectors look for observational drawing skill, creative composition, and evidence of personal expression. Include both completed works and process sketches to demonstrate artistic thinking and development.
According to MOE, DSA-Sec applications typically open in May and close in early June each year. Shortlisted students attend selection exercises between June and September. Results are released by mid-September, and students who receive offers must decide before the PSLE results are released, as acceptance is binding.
According to MOE's DSA policy, once a student accepts a DSA offer and is posted to the school, the placement is binding. Students will not be allowed to transfer to another school based on their PSLE results. This is why families should carefully consider school fit and the student's genuine interest before accepting any DSA offer.
