Explorative Art Classes

Art by Ancourage · Explorative

Content reviewed: Mar 2026

Explorative art classes at Art by Ancourage offer creative freedom for students aged 9 and above in Singapore (Bishan & Woodlands). Weekly classes of 3-6 students explore drawing, painting, and mixed media at their own pace in a relaxed environment. The NAC Population Survey on the Arts 2022 found that 59% of Singaporeans attended physical arts events, with childhood arts exposure correlating strongly with higher adult engagement (NAC, 2022). No prior art experience is needed—complete beginners are warmly welcomed alongside returning students. Our instructors guide each person through pencil drawing, watercolour, acrylic, and collage, helping them discover which media resonate most. Many adult learners find the sessions a welcome source of stress relief through focused creative activity. Over time, students build a personal creative voice—a recognisable style that makes their artwork uniquely theirs. "From first strokes to portfolio pieces, every artwork tells a story of growth," note our LASALLE-trained instructors. No prior experience needed; materials provided.

Lessons introduce fundamental art techniques while allowing students to work at their own pace. Students experiment freely, expressing themselves while gradually building confidence in their skills.

The programme follows a flexible thematic calendar that introduces new subjects and media each month—such as botanical drawing, seascape painting, or abstract collage—giving students regular fresh starting points. This variety keeps sessions engaging while gradually building a diverse body of work that reflects each student's creative journey.

Art Classes for Beginners in Singapore

Explorative art classes at Art by Ancourage are designed for teens, adults, and seniors who are new to art or returning after a break — no prior experience is required. Each session provides step-by-step instruction in foundational techniques including line, shape, shading, proportion, and colour mixing across drawing, watercolour, acrylic, and mixed media. Classes are small (3–6 students) so every participant receives personalised guidance and meaningful feedback. Unlike structured fine art programmes, Explorative sessions emphasise creative discovery at a relaxed pace — students choose their own direction rather than following a fixed syllabus. This makes it ideal for working adults looking for a creative outlet, hobbyists exploring a new skill, or anyone who wants to build confidence with art before committing to a more advanced track. Sessions run weekly at the Bishan studio (152 Bishan Street 11, near Bishan MRT CC15/NS17) and Woodlands studio (Vista Point, 548 Woodlands Drive 44, near Woodlands South MRT TE3), with weekday and weekend options. All materials are provided and $18 trial classes are available.

Structured Art Classes vs. Art Jamming for Beginners

Art jamming studios in Singapore offer a drop-in painting experience — you are given paints and a canvas but little to no instruction. This can be fun as a one-off activity, but most beginners leave without learning any transferable techniques. Explorative Art at Art by Ancourage is structured differently: each session teaches real artistic fundamentals — drawing, composition, colour theory, brush control — with step-by-step instructor guidance and individual feedback. You develop genuine skills that build week over week, not just a single painting. Research published in npj Science of Learning (2023) found that students in structured art programmes showed measurable gains in creative thinking and academic performance after just two semesters. In our small groups of 3-6, a LASALLE-trained instructor knows your skill level and tailors feedback to help you progress. If you enjoy the creative experience and want to deepen your skills further, you can transition to our Professional Fine Art track at any time.

Research from Drexel University found that 75% of participants showed reduced cortisol levels after just 45 minutes of art-making, regardless of prior experience (Kaimal et al., Art Therapy, 2016). The combination of focused creative activity, hands-on making, and a calm small-group environment makes Explorative Art an effective way to decompress. Many of our adult students describe their weekly session as the most restorative part of their week. Read our guide on why art education matters.
