Secondary EnglishTuition
Ancourage Academy's Secondary English tuition covers Sec 1 to Sec 4 at G3, G2, and G1 levels under Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB). Our small classes of 3-6 students at tuition centres near Bishan MRT and Woodlands South MRT develop comprehension, essay writing, oral communication, and critical thinking skills for the SEC English Language examination (G3: K300, formerly O-Level 1184) from 2027. The SEC G3 paper structure and standards are the same as the former O-Level. Lower secondary (Sec 1-2) builds strong foundations in narrative and expository writing, inference techniques, and visual text analysis. Upper secondary (Sec 3-4) focuses on examination readiness — including Paper 1 editing, situational writing, continuous writing, Paper 2 comprehension, and summary writing. Our ESB methodology — combining Ebbinghaus spaced retrieval for vocabulary and grammar retention, Socratic questioning to develop analytical thinking, and Bruner's progressive skill scaffolding — builds confident, independent language users. All materials are included with no registration fees, and parents receive regular progress updates plus 24/7 WhatsApp homework support.

How We Teach English
Our ESB methodology adapts specifically to english learning — building lasting understanding through evidence-based teaching strategies.
Ebbinghaus Memory Theory
For Secondary English, spaced retrieval means revisiting comprehension techniques, essay structures, and vocabulary at expanding intervals — regular timed practice ensures students can apply their skills fluently under O-Level / SEC exam conditions.
Socratic Questioning
In English class, we ask 'What is the writer's purpose here?' and 'How does this evidence support your argument?' — guiding students to think critically about texts and develop their own analytical voice rather than reproducing model answers.
Bruner's Scaffolding
English skills scaffold from structured responses to independent analysis — students progress from guided comprehension exercises to crafting nuanced argumentative essays and engaging in spontaneous spoken interaction.
“English at the secondary level demands far more than grammar drills — students must analyse unseen texts, craft compelling arguments, and communicate with precision. Our approach develops those higher-order skills through guided discussion and structured writing practice.”

Common English Challenges Parents Notice
These are the most frequent difficulties we help Secondary students overcome
Comprehension answers are too vague — cannot identify implied meaning or writer's intent in non-narrative texts
Essay writing lacks depth — arguments are superficial with weak supporting evidence and limited vocabulary
Struggles with editing and situational writing format requirements in Paper 1
Oral presentation anxiety — cannot organise thoughts quickly during Planned Response or Spoken Interaction
Vocabulary range is limited — relies on basic expressions and cannot vary tone or register appropriately
Time management issues — spends too long on Section A and rushes through comprehension or vice versa

Editing accuracy — learn common error types (tense, subject-verb agreement, preposition) for systematic correction

Our trial class is currently free (usually $18). Regular fees vary by level — Sec 1-2 foundational English and Sec 3-4 O-Level / SEC English preparation have different rates reflecting syllabus demands and exam intensity. Contact us for the latest pricing. We keep our rates competitive for small-group English tuition of 3-6 students at our Bishan and Woodlands centres.
Our programme covers all four English components for the SEC exam (G3: K300, same standard as O-Level 1184): Paper 1 (Editing, Situational Writing, and Continuous Writing), Paper 2 (Visual Text, Narrative, and Non-Narrative Comprehension), Paper 3 (Listening Comprehension), and Paper 4 (Oral — Planned Response and Spoken Interaction). The SEC replaces the O-Level from 2027, but the paper structure and standards remain the same.
Under Full SBB, students take English at different G-levels based on their ability. From 2027, all levels sit the SEC exam: G3 (K300) is at the same standard as the former O-Level, G2 (K200) covers the former N(A) curriculum, and G1 (K100) focuses on practical communication. We teach at each level with tailored materials and support students moving between G-levels.
We teach a structured argumentative framework: clear thesis statement, topic sentences with supporting evidence, counter-argument acknowledgement, and a strong conclusion. Students practise with O-Level and SEC essay prompts covering social issues, technology, and education topics, and receive detailed written feedback on logic, coherence, vocabulary range, and language use to improve with each draft.
Sec 1 is ideal for adjusting to secondary-level comprehension and essay demands, which are a significant step up from PSLE English. If your child struggles with essay structure, argumentative writing, or comprehension inference by Sec 2, targeted tuition is important before the O-Level / SEC exam years when Paper 1 editing, continuous writing, and Paper 2 summary skills all intensify significantly.
We practise both Planned Response (reading a visual or text stimulus and forming a structured opinion) and Spoken Interaction (engaging in a discussion with the examiner). The SEC G3 oral format is the same as the O-Level. Students learn to organise ideas quickly, use appropriate vocabulary, and respond confidently to follow-up questions.
