JC / A-Level MathematicsTuition
Ancourage Academy's JC Mathematics tuition covers JC1 and JC2, including H2 Mathematics (9758) and H1 Mathematics (8865). H2 Maths covers pure mathematics — functions, calculus, vectors, and complex numbers — plus statistics and probability. H1 Maths covers a subset of pure maths and statistics for students who need mathematical foundations without the full H2 depth. Our small classes of 3-6 students at tuition centres near Bishan MRT and Woodlands South MRT focus on conceptual understanding, multi-step problem-solving, and A-Level exam preparation. JC1 builds strong foundations in new concepts like calculus, vectors, and probability distributions. JC2 intensifies with integration techniques, differential equations, and rigorous exam practice. Our ESB methodology — combining Ebbinghaus spaced retrieval for formula retention, Socratic questioning to develop mathematical reasoning, and Bruner's concrete-to-abstract scaffolding — builds deep understanding that transfers across topics. All materials are included with no registration fees, and parents receive regular progress updates plus 24/7 WhatsApp homework support.

How We Teach Mathematics
Our ESB methodology adapts specifically to mathematics learning — building lasting understanding through evidence-based teaching strategies.
Ebbinghaus Memory Theory
For JC Maths, spaced retrieval means revisiting calculus techniques, vector operations, and statistical methods at expanding intervals — weekly topic drills and monthly cumulative reviews ensure formulas and problem-solving approaches stay sharp for A-Level exams.
Socratic Questioning
In JC Maths class, we ask 'Can you prove this result from first principles?' and 'What happens if we change this condition?' — probing questions that develop mathematical reasoning beyond formula substitution.
Bruner's Scaffolding
JC Maths concepts scaffold from concrete examples (numerical patterns, graphical representations) to symbolic manipulation to formal proofs — building the rigour needed for university-level mathematics.
“The jump from O-Level to H2 Mathematics catches many students off guard — the pace doubles and the abstraction deepens. Students who build strong calculus and statistics foundations in JC1 avoid the frantic catching-up that makes JC2 revision so stressful.”

Common Mathematics Challenges Parents Notice
These are the most frequent difficulties we help JC / A-Level students overcome
The O-Level to A-Level jump — A-Maths topics are assumed knowledge, and H2 Maths moves much faster
Calculus at H2 level requires fluency in integration techniques that go far beyond O-Level differentiation
Vectors and complex numbers are entirely new — students lack intuition for 3D geometry and imaginary numbers
Statistics requires understanding of probability distributions, not just calculating from given formulas
Multi-step problems that combine topics — e.g., using calculus within a statistics context
Time pressure on A-Level papers — 100 marks in 3 hours requires efficient, accurate working
A-Level Mathematics Preparation
Understanding the A-Level Mathematics format — 2 components with targeted strategies for each
Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics)
10-12 questions
100 marks · 3h
Paper 2 (Pure Maths + Statistics)
Sections A & B
100 marks · 3h
Our Exam Strategies
H1 Maths (8865) has a single 3-hour paper covering Pure Mathematics and Statistics (100 marks)
Show all working — method marks can rescue marks even with calculation errors
Allocate time per mark (roughly 1.8 minutes per mark) and flag difficult questions to revisit
Statistics questions require clear interpretation — always state the context of your answer
Practise with past A-Level papers under timed conditions from JC1 onwards
H2 Maths vs H1 Maths
H2 Mathematics (9758) covers the full A-Level syllabus. H1 Mathematics (8865) covers roughly half — designed for students who need maths but focus on other H2 subjects.
| Comparison aspect | H2 Maths (9758) | H1 Maths (8865) |
|---|---|---|
| Content | Pure Maths (functions, calculus, vectors, complex numbers) + Statistics & Probability | Pure Maths (functions, basic calculus) + Statistics |
| Papers | 2 papers, 200 marks total, 6 hours | 1 paper, 100 marks, 3 hours |
| Difficulty | Significantly harder — proof, abstract reasoning, multi-step problems | More accessible — fewer topics, more guided questions |
| University | Required for Engineering, Computing, Physics, Maths degrees; strongly preferred for Business and Economics | Accepted for most non-STEM degrees; some business courses accept H1 |
| Best for | Students aiming for STEM, Computing, Business, or Economics at university | Students taking 3 H2 subjects in Arts/Humanities who need maths breadth |
Most JC students take H2 Maths. H1 Maths is typically taken as a 4th subject alongside 3 H2 subjects. Students without A-Maths at O-Level may find H2 Maths very challenging.

H2 Maths (9758) covers pure mathematics, statistics, and probability in depth — 2 papers, 200 marks. H1 Maths (8865) covers a subset with 1 paper, 100 marks. Most JC students take H2 Maths. H1 is for students who need maths breadth alongside 3 other H2 subjects.
A-Maths is strongly recommended. H2 Maths assumes fluency in calculus, trigonometric identities, and algebraic manipulation from A-Maths. Students without A-Maths can take H2 Maths but will find the pace very challenging — we offer additional support for these students.
H2 Maths develops quantitative reasoning essential for Engineering, Computing, Business, and Economics degrees. The calculus, statistics, and proof techniques taught at H2 level are directly used in first-year university modules.
Our JC Maths tuition is available at two locations: Bishan (near Catholic High School, CHIJ St Joseph's Convent, and Bishan MRT) and Woodlands (Vista Point, near Yishun Innova Junior College (YIJC) and Republic Polytechnic). Both centres offer the same small-group format of 3-6 students.
Our trial class is currently free (usually $18). Regular fees vary by level. Contact us for the latest pricing — we keep our rates competitive for small-group tuition of 3-6 students.
JC1 is ideal — the jump from O-Level to A-Level Maths is steep, and early intervention prevents gaps from compounding. For JC2 students, we offer intensive revision focusing on exam techniques and timed paper practice.
