Art by Ancourage has achieved a 100% acceptance rate for DSA (Direct School Admission) art portfolio and art school applications to date — every student we have prepared has been admitted to their target school. This includes seven Singapore secondary schools through DSA and three art institutions locally and internationally.

As an art educator with qualifications from LASALLE College of the Arts and Goldsmiths, University of London, I have guided each of these students through portfolio development, artist statement writing, and interview preparation at our Bishan and Woodlands studios. This article shares which schools our students have been accepted to and what made their applications successful.

Schools Our Students Have Been Accepted To

Our students have been accepted across the full spectrum of DSA art pathways — from Singapore's only specialised arts school to internationally renowned institutions like RISD and CalArts.

What Made These Applications Successful

Three factors consistently contributed to our students' successful DSA and art school admissions: early preparation, personalised portfolio strategy, and thorough interview readiness.

1. Starting Early (1–2 Years Before Application)

Most of our successfully admitted students began structured portfolio preparation in Primary 4 or 5 — giving them 1–2 years to develop technical skills, explore media, and build a cohesive body of work. This timeline allows for genuine artistic growth rather than rushed assembly of portfolio pieces.

During this period, students build foundational skills across drawing, painting, and mixed media while developing a visual vocabulary — learning to articulate their creative choices and artistic intent. Students who start early have time to explore multiple media and discover their artistic voice before committing to a final portfolio direction.

2. Personalised Portfolio Strategy

Each school evaluates portfolios differently. SOTA now requires 5 pieces emphasising authenticity and originality (updated 2025). AEP schools look for academic-arts balance. International institutions like RISD expect process documentation and conceptual depth. We tailor each student's portfolio strategy to their specific target schools — selecting pieces, sequencing the narrative, and addressing each school's published evaluation criteria.

3. Interview and Presentation Readiness

Portfolio quality alone does not secure admission. SOTA conducts group activities and individual interviews. SJI requires portfolio presentations. Other schools include live drawing tasks. We run mock interviews covering portfolio discussion, artistic intent, and school-specific questions, so students present confidently and authentically.

Common interview topics include explaining the inspiration behind specific portfolio pieces, describing the artistic process and materials chosen, and discussing future artistic goals. Schools like SOTA also include group activities where students collaborate on creative tasks — preparation for these collaborative elements helps students demonstrate both individual talent and teamwork.

DSA Art Portfolio Preparation at Art by Ancourage

Art by Ancourage's DSA Art Portfolio programme runs weekly in small groups of 3–6 at our Bishan and Woodlands studios. The programme covers:

  • Drawing, painting, and mixed media — building the technical range schools look for
  • Portfolio curation — selecting and sequencing the strongest pieces for each target school
  • Artist statement writing — articulating artistic intent and creative process
  • Interview coaching — mock interviews tailored to each school's format
  • Application timeline management — ensuring deadlines for MOE DSA-Sec Portal (May–June), SOTA (March–May), and other pathways are met

Book an art trial class ($18) to assess your child's portfolio readiness and plan a preparation timeline.

For detailed guidance on what to include in your portfolio, see the DSA Art Portfolio Guide. If your child is targeting SOTA specifically, the SOTA Portfolio Preparation Guide covers the unique audition process and requirements.

The DSA Art Application Timeline

DSA art applications follow a strict timeline — missing a deadline means waiting another full year, so families should plan preparation around these key dates.

  • SOTA (March–May): The earliest DSA art deadline. SOTA requires a portfolio submission, audition, and interview. Students applying to SOTA should have a portfolio-ready body of work by February.
  • MOE DSA-Sec Portal (May–June): The main DSA window for all participating secondary schools including HCI AEP, SJI, NJC AEP, Victoria School, Nan Chiau High, and Dunman High. Applications are submitted through the centralised MOE portal.
  • International institutions (varies): LASALLE, RISD, and CalArts have their own application cycles. RISD's deadline is typically January for the following academic year.

The DSA guide for Singapore covers the general DSA process, eligibility, and strategy for all talent areas.

How Portfolio Quality Differs by School

Each school evaluates portfolios against different criteria — a portfolio that impresses SOTA may not suit HCI AEP, and international art schools have entirely different expectations.

  • SOTA: Prioritises authenticity, originality, and creative exploration. Expects 5 portfolio pieces (updated 2025) showing personal voice rather than technical perfection. The DSA art interview and drawing test guide covers SOTA's assessment in detail.
  • AEP schools (HCI, NJC): Look for academic-arts balance. Portfolios should demonstrate both technical skill and conceptual thinking. The complete list of DSA art schools compares AEP programmes across all participating schools.
  • International institutions (RISD, CalArts): Expect process documentation, conceptual depth, and evidence of artistic development over time. Sketchbooks and process work are often as important as finished pieces.

Whether your child is exploring art enrichment classes or is ready for focused DSA preparation, understanding what each school values helps shape the right preparation strategy.

What Parents Should Know Before Starting DSA Art Preparation

DSA art preparation is a commitment — most successful applicants invest 1–2 years of consistent weekly practice before their application window opens.

Key considerations for parents:

  • Start with genuine interest: DSA art works best for children who already enjoy creating art. Forcing a reluctant child into portfolio preparation rarely produces the authentic work that schools look for.
  • Understand the academic trade-off: Students admitted via DSA art commit to that school regardless of their PSLE score (within a floor). This is an advantage for art-talented students whose PSLE score might not reach the school's cut-off through the normal posting process.
  • Consider multiple pathways: Applying to 2–3 schools through DSA increases chances of at least one offer. The DSA offer ranking and allocation guide explains how to rank multiple offers strategically.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your DSA acceptance rate?

Art by Ancourage has maintained a 100% DSA and art school acceptance rate to date, with students admitted to SOTA, HCI (AEP), SJI, NJC (AEP), Victoria School, Nan Chiau High School, Dunman High School, LASALLE, RISD, and CalArts.

When should my child start DSA art preparation?

We recommend starting 1–2 years before the application deadline (typically May for MOE DSA-Sec, March for SOTA). Most of our successfully admitted students began in Primary 4 or 5. All preparation happens in small groups of 3-6 for personalised portfolio feedback.

Can you prepare portfolios for international art schools like RISD?

Yes. The portfolio development, artist statement writing, and presentation skills built during DSA preparation transfer directly to international art school applications. We adjust portfolio strategy based on each institution's specific requirements — for example, RISD expects process documentation and conceptual depth alongside finished works.

Is HCI AEP new? How do you prepare for it?

Yes — Hwa Chong Institution launched the Art Elective Programme as a new DSA talent area for the 2026 intake. Our DSA preparation covers HCI AEP requirements including portfolio development and interview readiness. As an early-stage programme, it presents an excellent opportunity for art-talented students.

How competitive is DSA for art in Singapore?

Approximately 4,400 students (11% of the P6 cohort) were admitted via DSA in 2023, up from 9% in 2019 (MOE, 2024). SOTA is particularly competitive, with roughly one in five applicants admitted. Structured preparation significantly improves outcomes — our 100% acceptance rate reflects this.
