Primary EnglishTuition
Ancourage Academy's Primary English tuition covers P1 to P6, fully aligned with Singapore's MOE English Language syllabus (EL 0001). Our small classes of 3-6 students at tuition centres near Bishan MRT and Woodlands South MRT develop composition writing, reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and oral communication skills progressively across all six primary levels. Lower primary (P1-P2) focuses on phonics, sight words, sentence construction, and building reading fluency and confidence. Middle primary (P3-P4) introduces structured composition writing, comprehension inference strategies, and grammar cloze techniques. Upper primary (P5-P6) builds PSLE readiness through continuous writing, situational writing, comprehension cloze, synthesis and transformation, and oral examination practice with timed conditions. Our ESB methodology — combining Ebbinghaus spaced retrieval for vocabulary and grammar retention, Socratic questioning to develop critical reading skills, and Bruner's spiral curriculum for progressive language mastery — builds strong foundations that last. All materials are included with no registration fees, and parents receive regular progress updates plus 24/7 WhatsApp homework support.

How We Teach English
Our ESB methodology adapts specifically to english learning — building lasting understanding through evidence-based teaching strategies.
Ebbinghaus Memory Theory
For English, spaced retrieval means revisiting grammar rules, vocabulary, and comprehension techniques at expanding intervals — regular practice ensures students can recall and apply language rules accurately under exam conditions.
Socratic Questioning
In English class, we ask 'What clues in the passage support your answer?' and 'How could you make this sentence more vivid?' — guiding students to think critically about language rather than simply memorising model answers.
Bruner's Scaffolding
English skills progress from reading simple texts to analysing complex passages, and from writing single sentences to crafting full compositions — each stage scaffolded so students build genuine language proficiency, not just surface-level skills.
“Many children arrive saying they're 'bad at English' — but within weeks, that changes. It's not that English became easier; it's that they finally have someone who reads with them, writes with them, and meets them exactly where they are.”

Common English Challenges Parents Notice
These are the most frequent difficulties we help Primary students overcome
Cannot plan and structure compositions — stories lack a clear beginning, build-up, climax, and resolution
Struggles with comprehension inference — can find stated facts but cannot read between the lines
Limited vocabulary range — relies on basic words like 'happy', 'sad', 'said' in composition writing
Inconsistent grammar — mixes tenses within paragraphs and makes subject-verb agreement errors
Oral communication anxiety — lacks confidence during reading aloud and Stimulus-Based Conversation
Poor time management — spends too long on composition and rushes through comprehension questions

Our trial class is currently free (usually $18). Regular fees vary by level — P1-P2, P3-P4, and P5-P6 each have different rates reflecting the progression from grammar foundations to PSLE composition and comprehension. Contact us for the latest pricing. We keep our rates competitive for small-group English tuition of 3-6 students at our Bishan and Woodlands centres.
P1-P2 is ideal for building strong reading fluency, phonics, and sentence writing foundations. If your child struggles with composition structure, grammar accuracy, or comprehension inference by P3-P4, targeted tuition can close gaps before the PSLE demands increase significantly at P5 — when synthesis, transformation, and higher-order comprehension are introduced.
Our programme covers all four PSLE English components: Paper 1 (Situational Writing and Continuous Writing with narrative, descriptive, and expository formats), Paper 2 (Grammar Cloze, Vocabulary Cloze, Comprehension Cloze, Synthesis and Transformation, and Reading Comprehension), Listening Comprehension, and Oral Communication (Reading Aloud and Stimulus-Based Conversation). Each component receives dedicated practice throughout the year.
We teach a structured planning method — brainstorm, outline, draft, revise. Students practise strong openings, vivid descriptions using show-not-tell, logical paragraph flow, and impactful conclusions. Each composition receives detailed written feedback on language, structure, and vocabulary use, with guided rewrites to reinforce improvement.
Yes, our curriculum is fully aligned with the MOE English Language syllabus (EL 0001). We cover grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, composition, and oral skills at each level, progressing from phonics and sentence construction at P1-P2 to synthesis and transformation at P5-P6. Lessons are supplemented with exam strategies, extended reading practice, and exposure to varied text types.
We teach students to identify question types — literal, inferential, and evaluative — and apply targeted answering techniques for each. For inference questions, students learn to use contextual clues and read between the lines. For vocabulary-in-context, they practise substitution and elimination. Students also learn to paraphrase effectively and structure complete answers that meet PSLE marking requirements.
