We recommend starting focused PSLE preparation in Primary 5, which gives students 18 months to build strong foundations and address weak areas. However, students who join in Primary 6 can still benefit from intensive revision and exam-focused practice. The earlier you start, the more time there is to identify and close learning gaps systematically.

PSLE Preparation
8 questions
How should I prepare my child for PSLE?
Start early - ideally 12-18 months before the exam. This gives enough time to identify weak areas and build real confidence.
Here is what effective PSLE prep looks like: • Diagnostic assessment to pinpoint gaps • Targeted revision (not just more practice, but the right practice) • Regular timed papers to build exam stamina • Heuristics training for tricky problem sums • Time management strategies for the actual exam
With classes of just 3-6 students, every child gets the attention they need to close their specific gaps.
When should PSLE preparation start?
What are the most common PSLE Maths mistakes?
After years of marking scripts, here are the mistakes we see most often: • Careless calculation errors (especially decimals and fractions) • Misreading problem sums or missing key words • Choosing the wrong heuristic for multi-step problems • Running out of time and rushing the last few questions • Not showing working clearly - losing method marks even when the answer is close
The good news? These are fixable with the right training. Students learn to check their work systematically and build consistent problem-solving habits.
How can my child improve their PSLE English composition?
Composition is about three things: what you say (content), how you say it (language), and how you organise it (structure). Most students struggle with at least one of these.
What actually works: • Building a bank of vocabulary and phrases for different themes • Learning story structures examiners reward • Practising varied topics (not just the same genre repeatedly) • Getting detailed feedback on every piece - not just a grade, but specific improvements
Expect 3-4 months of consistent practice before you see real score improvements. There are no shortcuts here.
Is PSLE Science harder than Primary 5 Science?
PSLE Science covers the full Primary 3-6 syllabus, which means students must revise topics from earlier years while learning new P6 content. The questions also tend to be more application-based, requiring students to apply concepts to unfamiliar scenarios. Our PSLE Science classes include systematic topic revision and extensive practice with higher-order thinking questions.
How do I manage my child's PSLE stress?
Some stress is normal - it shows your child cares. But too much can backfire. Here is what helps: • Keep a balanced schedule (study breaks matter!) • Set realistic targets, not perfection • Celebrate small wins along the way • Protect sleep time, especially near exams • Talk openly about worries - do not sweep them under the rug
The tutors here are trained to spot stress signs early and adjust their approach. Encouragement works better than pressure - every time.
What's the best study schedule for PSLE?
An effective PSLE study schedule includes: daily revision of 1-2 hours during school term, practice papers on weekends, and intensive revision during June and September holidays. We recommend focusing on weaker subjects first and doing timed practice to build exam stamina. Our tutors help students create personalised study plans based on their current level and target goals.
Does Ancourage offer PSLE crash courses?
Yes! We offer PSLE crash courses during the June and September school holidays. These intensive programmes focus on exam techniques, common question types, and last-minute revision of key topics. Classes are kept small (3-6 students) to ensure every student gets personalised attention. Contact us here for the latest schedule and availability.

What is E-Maths (Elementary Mathematics)?
Elementary Mathematics (E-Maths) is a compulsory upper secondary mathematics subject in Singapore covering algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and probability. Under Full SBB, E-Maths is taken at G3 and G2 levels. It focuses on practical mathematical applications for everyday life and provides essential quantitative skills. E-Maths is a prerequisite for most post-secondary courses, polytechnic programmes, and ITE courses. E-Maths is assessed via national examinations (GCE O-Level for current cohorts; SEC under Full SBB).
What is A-Maths (Additional Mathematics)?
Additional Mathematics (A-Maths) is an elective upper secondary subject covering advanced topics including calculus, differentiation, integration, trigonometric identities, logarithms, and coordinate geometry. Under Full SBB, A-Maths is available at G3 and G2 levels. A-Maths develops abstract reasoning and is typically required for students pursuing Science, Engineering, or Mathematics streams in Junior College. It serves as essential preparation for H2 Maths at A-Level. A-Maths is assessed via national examinations (GCE O-Level for current cohorts; SEC under Full SBB).
How can my child improve in Primary Maths?
Improving in maths comes down to three things: strong foundations in number sense, knowing which strategies to use when, and exam technique. Without all three, scores stay stuck.
Here is what works: • Start with a diagnostic to find the actual gaps (not guessing) • Targeted practice with MOE-aligned materials • Heuristics training - because problem sums follow patterns • Regular mock tests with real feedback, not just marks
Most students see improvement within 2-3 months if they are consistent. Classes stay small (3-6 students) so no one gets lost.
Why do students struggle with fractions and ratios?
Fractions and ratios are abstract concepts that many students find challenging because they require strong number sense and the ability to visualise relationships. Common struggles include: understanding equivalent fractions, converting between fractions and decimals, and applying ratios to word problems. Our tutors use visual aids, manipulatives, and real-world examples to make these concepts concrete and relatable.
What's the difference between A-Maths and E-Maths?
Elementary Mathematics (E-Maths) covers foundational topics like algebra, geometry, and statistics that are applicable to everyday life. Additional Mathematics (A-Maths) is more rigorous and includes topics like trigonometry, calculus, and logarithms.
A-Maths is typically required for students pursuing Science or Engineering courses in JC and university. We offer both E-Maths and A-Maths tuition, with experienced tutors who understand the different demands of each syllabus.
How does Ancourage teach problem-solving for Maths?
We teach problem-solving using a structured heuristics approach. Students learn to: (1) Read and understand the problem carefully, (2) Identify what information is given and what is required, (3) Select appropriate strategies (model drawing, working backwards, etc.), (4) Execute the solution systematically, and (5) Check their answer. This systematic approach helps students tackle unfamiliar problems with confidence.
Is JC Maths (H2) much harder than O-Level?
Yes, H2 Maths is significantly more challenging than O-Level A-Maths. It covers advanced topics like vectors, complex numbers, and calculus at a deeper level. The jump in difficulty often surprises students. We recommend starting JC tuition early to build strong foundations and stay ahead of the fast-paced JC curriculum.
How do you help students who hate Maths?
Many students who 'hate' Maths have experienced frustration from not understanding concepts or falling behind. Our approach focuses on rebuilding confidence through: (1) Starting from where the student is comfortable, (2) Breaking concepts into small, manageable steps, (3) Celebrating small wins, and (4) Making connections to real-world applications.
Our patient tutors create a supportive environment where students feel safe to ask questions and make mistakes. Many students who initially disliked Maths have grown to enjoy it after building their confidence with us.

How can my child write better compositions?
Good writing is not magic - it is a skill built through deliberate practice in content (what to say), language (how to say it), and organisation (in what order).
What makes the difference: • Building vocabulary banks for different themes and emotions • Learning story structures that actually work (hook → rising action → climax → resolution) • Practising 'show, do not tell' descriptions • Writing regularly with detailed feedback - not just corrections, but why
With consistent practice, most students improve within 2-3 months. Planning before writing and managing time well are exam skills we build in too.
What's the best way to improve vocabulary?
Memorising word lists does not work long-term. What does? Reading widely (fiction, non-fiction, news), learning words in context instead of isolation, keeping a vocabulary journal with example sentences, and actually using new words in writing and conversation. Vocabulary building is woven into every lesson here through comprehension passages and composition practice - not taught as a separate 'vocabulary session'.
How do you teach comprehension skills?
Comprehension is not just 'reading carefully' - it is knowing how to tackle different question types. Students learn active reading (highlighting key points, annotating, summarising), how to recognise what each question is really asking (inference? vocabulary-in-context? summary?), and techniques for lifting and adapting answers from the text.
Time management matters too. Many students lose marks not because they do not know - but because they spent too long on one tricky question and rushed the rest.
Is oral examination practice included?
Yes, we include oral examination practice in our English classes. This covers: reading aloud with proper expression and pronunciation, stimulus-based conversation practice, and tips for building confidence during the spoken exam. Students practise with varied topics to build fluency and learn to develop their responses with relevant examples and opinions.
How does Ancourage approach grammar teaching?
Grammar drills in isolation do not stick. Instead, students learn through correcting errors in their own writing, editing real passages, practising specific grammar points in context, and applying rules in actual compositions. The goal is not to memorise rules - it is to know when and how to use them correctly without thinking.
Can you help with creative writing?
Yes! Creative writing is one of our specialities. We help students develop their unique voice while learning techniques like: descriptive writing, dialogue, pacing, and creating engaging plots. Whether preparing for school compositions or exploring creative writing as a skill, our tutors nurture creativity while building technical writing skills.

How do you make Science interesting for children?
Science becomes interesting when it connects to real life. That's why lessons tie concepts to everyday things kids can actually see - why the sky is blue, how ice cream melts, what makes things float. Hands-on demos, videos for abstract ideas, and lots of 'why?' questions keep curiosity alive. The tutors here genuinely love Science, and that enthusiasm is contagious. Many kids who thought Science was 'boring' change their minds once they see how it applies to their world.
Is practical/lab work included in Science tuition?
While we focus on conceptual understanding and exam preparation, we incorporate practical elements through demonstrations and hands-on activities where relevant. For Secondary students preparing for practical exams, we teach practical skills, safety procedures, and how to write scientific observations and conclusions effectively.
What's the difference between Pure and Combined Science?
Pure Sciences (Pure Physics, Chemistry, or Biology) cover topics in greater depth and are typically required for Science-related courses in JC. Combined Science covers selected topics from two subjects (e.g., Physics/Chemistry) at a foundational level.
The choice depends on your child's interests and future goals. Students aiming for Science or Engineering should typically take Pure Sciences. We offer tuition for both Pure and Combined Science subjects.
How do you prepare students for Science practical exams?
Practical exams test specific skills: • Experimental techniques and safety procedures • Recording observations accurately (examiners are picky about this) • Data analysis and graph plotting • Writing conclusions that actually answer the question • Spotting common question types Students practise with past practical papers until these skills become second nature. Familiarity reduces exam-day nerves.
Does Ancourage cover all 3 Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)?
Yes, we offer tuition for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at both Secondary and JC levels. We have specialist tutors for each subject who understand the specific demands of the syllabus and common student difficulties. Whether your child needs help with one subject or all three, we can accommodate.
How early should Science tuition start?
For most students, Science tuition becomes beneficial from Primary 5 when topics become more complex, or at the start of Secondary 1 when the pace increases significantly. However, students who are struggling or want to excel can benefit from starting earlier. Reach out to us for an assessment so we can advise based on your child's specific situation.

Can you help if my child only speaks English at home?
Absolutely! Many of our students come from English-speaking homes and struggle with Chinese. Our tutors are experienced in helping these students build confidence and competence in Mandarin.
We focus on: (1) Building vocabulary through systematic exposure, (2) Making Chinese relevant and less 'foreign', (3) Practical exam techniques to score well even with limited fluency, and (4) Encouraging gradual immersion. Many English-dominant students have seen significant improvement with consistent effort.
What's the difference between Chinese and Higher Chinese?
Higher Chinese covers the same topics as Chinese but at a deeper level with more complex texts and higher writing expectations. Higher Chinese students also take their O-Level exam in Secondary 3 instead of 4. We offer tuition for both Chinese and Higher Chinese, with materials tailored to each syllabus level.
How do you teach Chinese composition writing?
Chinese composition requires different skills from English composition. We teach: (1) Sentence structures and transition phrases, (2) Common composition types and their requirements, (3) Building vocabulary for different themes, (4) Proper use of idioms and proverbs (成语), and (5) Exam techniques specific to Chinese papers. Regular practice with detailed feedback helps students improve steadily.
Is oral examination practice included for Chinese?
Yes, oral practice is an important part of our Chinese classes. We cover: reading aloud with correct pronunciation and intonation (朗读), picture description and conversation (看图说话/会话), and tips for expressing opinions clearly. Students practise with varied topics to build fluency and confidence for the oral examination.
Do you offer Chinese tuition for non-Chinese speakers?
Yes, we welcome students of all backgrounds who want to learn Chinese. Our tutors are experienced in teaching Chinese as a second language and adapt their approach based on each student's starting level. Whether your child is taking Chinese as a Mother Tongue Language or as a third language, we can help.
How do you make Chinese learning fun?
We make Chinese engaging through: (1) Using multimedia and current affairs topics students can relate to, (2) Games and interactive activities for vocabulary building, (3) Connecting language learning to Chinese culture and traditions, and (4) Celebrating progress to build confidence. Our tutors understand that many students find Chinese challenging and focus on making lessons enjoyable while still academically rigorous.
Can my child get MTL exemption, and should we try?
Mother Tongue Language (MTL) exemption is possible but should be a last resort. MOE considers exemption on a case-by-case basis, typically for students returning from extended overseas stays (with limited MTL exposure) or those with specific learning difficulties that affect language acquisition.
Before applying for exemption, consider: • MTL 'B' Syllabus - A less demanding alternative for students who struggle. Offered to those with AL7-8 in PSLE MTL or D7-F9 at O-Level • Exemption impact - MTL 'B' is not counted in L1R5 aggregate, limiting post-secondary options • University requirement - Local universities require at least a Pass in MTL 'B' or equivalent for admission • Long-term benefits - Bilingualism is increasingly valued in Singapore's job market
If your child struggles with MTL: • Targeted tuition can help build confidence and competence • Focus on exam techniques to maximise scores • Start early - consistent support yields better results than last-minute cramming We help students at all MTL levels, including those considering or already on MTL 'B' syllabus. Contact us to discuss your child's situation.
What's the best MTL strategy for university admission?
Mother Tongue Language can help or hurt your university admission score depending on how you approach it. Here is what you need to know:
For O-Level students: • Higher Chinese (HCL) students who score D7 or better can skip MTL at A-Level entirely • This is a significant advantage - one less subject to worry about in JC • If aiming for HCL, start preparation early and consider tuition support
For JC students: • H1 MTL is taken in JC1; a good grade can boost your rank points • MTL only counts towards your University Admission Score if it improves your total • From 2026, with the new 70 RP system, MTL strategy becomes even more important
Our recommendation: • Do not neglect MTL hoping for exemption - build competence early • For Chinese-speaking families, aim for Higher Chinese O-Level success • For struggling students, consistent tuition support is more effective than cramming

What is O-Level?
The Singapore-Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level (O-Level) is a national examination taken by Secondary 4 Express or Secondary 5 Normal Academic students (typically age 16). Jointly administered by Cambridge, MOE, and SEAB, it assesses subjects including English, Mathematics, Sciences, and Humanities. O-Level grades range from A1 (best) to F9, and results determine pathways to Junior College, Polytechnic, or ITE. Under Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB), the SEC examination is being introduced, while O-Level remains relevant for current cohorts during the transition.
How do I choose between Pure and Combined Science?
The choice depends on your child's interests, abilities, and future goals. Pure Sciences are typically required for H2 Science subjects in JC and Science-related university courses. Combined Science is suitable for students who want foundational Science knowledge but may pursue Arts or Business tracks.
Consider: (1) Your child's passion for Science, (2) Performance in lower Secondary Science, (3) Future career interests, and (4) Overall subject combination balance. We can advise based on your child's specific situation.
What subject combinations are recommended for Sec 3?
Subject combinations should balance interests, strengths, and future goals. Common considerations include: (1) Taking subjects required for intended JC course or polytechnic diploma, (2) Having a mix of content-heavy and skills-based subjects, (3) Choosing subjects your child genuinely enjoys, and (4) Considering workload and time management. We recommend consulting your child's school counsellor and discussing options with us.
How does Ancourage prepare students for O-Levels and the SEC exam?
Exam prep starts in earnest from Sec 3. Our tuition covers G1, G2, and G3 subject levels under Full SBB. Here is what it looks like: • Systematic topic revision aligned to the latest MOE syllabus at each G-level • Intensive past-paper practice (with proper answer scheme analysis) • Subject-specific exam techniques for SEC, with O-Level preparation where applicable • Time management and paper strategy • Regular assessments to track where you stand By the time the exam arrives, students have seen enough papers that the format feels familiar.
Is Secondary school tuition really necessary?
Whether tuition is necessary depends on your child's individual needs. Tuition can be helpful when: (1) Your child is struggling to keep up with school pace, (2) They need more individual attention than school classes provide, (3) They want to excel beyond school curriculum, or (4) They need structured revision for major exams.
At Ancourage, we offer trial lessons so you can assess if tuition is beneficial for your child before committing.
How can my teen improve time management?
Effective time management for teens includes: (1) Using a planner to track assignments and commitments, (2) Breaking large tasks into smaller chunks, (3) Setting specific study times and eliminating distractions, (4) Prioritising tasks by urgency and importance, and (5) Building in breaks to prevent burnout. Our tutors help students develop these skills as part of our holistic approach to learning.
Do you help with DSA applications?
Yes! For academic DSA, we help students build strong portfolios and prepare for interviews. For Art DSA specifically, Art by Ancourage offers dedicated portfolio preparation programmes that have helped students successfully gain admission to top secondary schools. Contact us here to learn more about our DSA support.
What is the Integrated Programme (IP)?
The Integrated Programme (IP) is a 6-year secondary-to-JC pathway for high-performing students, allowing them to skip the O-Level examination. IP students go directly from Secondary 4 to JC1 within the same school or affiliated JC, receiving an enriched curriculum with greater depth and breadth.
IP schools include Raffles Institution, Hwa Chong Institution, NUS High, and several others. Entry is highly competitive, typically requiring PSLE scores of AL6 or better. While IP students do not sit for O-Levels, they still take A-Levels or equivalent examinations (like the IB Diploma) at JC2. We support IP students with subject-specific tuition, particularly for subjects with accelerated or enhanced curricula.
What is Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB)?
Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB) is Singapore's new secondary education system, implemented from 2024 to replace the old Express/Normal Academic/Normal Technical streaming. Under Full SBB, students take subjects at G1, G2, or G3 levels based on their individual strengths, rather than being locked into one stream.
Key features: • Posting Groups - Students enter secondary school via PG1, PG2, or PG3 (mapped from old streams), but this only determines starting subject levels • Flexibility - Students can move between G1, G2, G3 levels throughout secondary school • Mixed classes - Form classes include students from all Posting Groups • New exam - Students take the SEC examination for subjects assessed under Full SBB, with results reported by G level (G1/G2/G3) This means tuition support should focus on helping students excel at their current subject level while preparing them for potential level-ups.
How should we navigate Subject-Based Banding as parents?
Under Full SBB, your child's success depends on performing well at their current subject levels and strategically moving up when ready. Here is how to approach it:
Key strategies: • Focus on current level mastery - Ensure your child is confident at their G1/G2/G3 level before pushing for upgrades • Identify strength subjects - Students can take different subjects at different levels; identify where your child can stretch • Monitor level-up opportunities - Schools offer chances to move up based on performance; ensure your child is prepared • Do not chase labels - Being in PG2 with strong G3 subjects is better than struggling across all G3 subjects • Plan for SEC - SEC reports grades by each subject's G-level; strength in some G3 subjects matters more than struggling everywhere Tuition can help by strengthening weak subjects at current level while preparing for level-ups in strength subjects.
What is the difference between G1, G2, and G3 tuition?
Under Full SBB, secondary students take subjects at three levels: G3 (mapped from Express standard, the most academically demanding), G2 (mapped from Normal Academic), and G1 (mapped from Normal Technical, with a more practical focus).
At Ancourage, we offer tuition across G1, G2, and G3 levels. Our small classes (3-6 students) allow tutors to tailor support to each student's G-level, whether they are building foundations at G1, strengthening skills at G2, or mastering exam techniques at G3. Contact us to discuss your child's current G-level and we will arrange the best class fit.
What is the SEC examination and how is it different from O-Levels?
The Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examination is the newer national examination framework under Full SBB. Under the SEC, students sit for each subject at the G-level they studied it — G1, G2, or G3 — rather than taking a single stream-wide exam. During the transition, parents may still see O-Level and N-Level terms for current cohorts.
Key differences from O-Levels: • SEC allows mixed G-level combinations (e.g., G3 Maths with G2 English) • Grades reflect the specific G-level, giving a more nuanced transcript • Post-secondary pathways (JC, Polytechnic, ITE) will adjust admission criteria accordingly Our tuition prepares students for the SEC exam with the same rigour and structured approach we applied to O-Level preparation.
Can my child move from G2 to G3 for a subject?
Yes! Under Full SBB, schools regularly assess students for level-up opportunities. If your child demonstrates strong performance at G2, the school may offer them the chance to move up to G3 for that subject. Tuition can help by ensuring your child is not just keeping up at G2 but excelling — building the foundation needed to handle G3 demands confidently. Contact us to discuss a level-up preparation plan.
Does Ancourage Academy offer G2 tuition?
Yes — Ancourage Academy offers tuition at G1, G2, and G3 levels for secondary students. Class arrangements vary by subject and level, so contact us to discuss your child's current G-level and goals, and we will recommend the best arrangement.
Should my child go to JC or Polytechnic?
This is one of the biggest decisions after O-Levels, and there is no universally 'better' choice—it depends on your child's strengths, interests, and goals.
Consider JC if your child: • Prefers academic, theory-based learning • Has strong performance across multiple subjects • Is aiming for competitive university courses (Medicine, Law, etc.) • Thrives under exam pressure and can handle intensive 2-year programmes • Wants to keep options open before choosing a specialisation
Consider Polytechnic if your child: • Prefers hands-on, project-based learning • Has a clear interest in a specific field (IT, Business, Design, etc.) • Learns better through continuous assessment than high-stakes exams • Wants industry exposure through internships during study • Is self-directed and can manage long-term project deadlines
Key facts: • JC is 2 years; Polytechnic is 3 years • ~80% of JC students proceed directly to university vs ~30% of Poly graduates within a year (though many enter later) • Polytechnic courses are increasingly competitive—some require straight As to enter • Both pathways can lead to successful careers *Note: Ancourage Academy supports students on the JC/A-Level pathway. For O-Level preparation that keeps both options open, contact us.*

JC & A-Level
7 questions
What is A-Level?
The Singapore-Cambridge GCE Advanced Level (A-Level) is the national examination for Junior College students (JC1-JC2, ages 17-18). Students study H1 and H2 subjects over two years, with H2 subjects being more rigorous and in-depth. A-Level grades range from A to U (ungraded), and results are the primary criteria for local university admission. The standard combination is 3 H2 subjects + 1 H1 content subject, plus compulsory General Paper and Project Work.
What is the difference between H1 and H2 subjects?
H1 (Higher 1) and H2 (Higher 2) refer to the depth of study in A-Level subjects. H2 subjects cover content in greater depth, constitute 2 academic units, and carry higher rank points. H1 subjects are briefer, constitute 1 academic unit, and cover fewer topics—though question difficulty is similar.
Most JC students take 3 H2 + 1 H1 content subjects, plus compulsory H1 General Paper and Project Work. Some high-performing students may take 4 H2 subjects. H2 subjects are typically prerequisites for related university courses (e.g., H2 Chemistry for Medicine).
Is JC tuition worth the investment?
JC tuition can be highly valuable given the significant jump in difficulty and pace from Secondary school. The JC curriculum covers 2 years of content in less time, with higher expectations for independent learning.
Tuition is particularly helpful for: (1) Students struggling to keep up with the fast pace, (2) Those aiming for competitive university courses, (3) Subjects like H2 Maths and the sciences, which many students find challenging, and (4) Students who need structured revision time. We offer trial lessons so you can assess the value before committing.
How is JC different from Secondary school?
JC differs from Secondary school in several key ways: (1) Faster pace with more content covered in less time, (2) Greater expectation for independent learning and self-study, (3) More abstract and complex concepts, especially in H2 subjects, (4) Essay-based assessment in many subjects, and (5) Higher competition as students are among the top performers from O-Levels.
Many students underestimate this jump and struggle in JC1. Starting tuition early can help smooth the transition.
Can you help with H2 subjects?
Yes, we offer tuition for H2 subjects including H2 Maths, H2 Physics, H2 Chemistry, H2 Biology, H2 Economics, and H2 English. Our JC tutors are specialists who understand the specific demands of the A-Level syllabus and have experience helping students achieve their target grades.
How do you prepare students for A-Level essays?
A-Level essays require sophisticated argumentation and analysis. We teach: (1) How to structure essays for different subjects (GP, Economics, Humanities), (2) Developing and supporting arguments with evidence, (3) Critical analysis and evaluation skills, (4) Time management for essay papers, and (5) Common pitfalls to avoid. What are rank points and how do they work for university admission?
Rank Points (RP) are how A-Level grades are converted into a score for university admission in Singapore. Each grade earns points, and your total determines eligibility for NUS, NTU, SMU, and other local universities.
Current system (until 2025 A-Levels): • Maximum 90 RP based on 3 H2 + 1 H1 content subjects + GP + Project Work • H2 grades: A=20, B=17.5, C=15, D=12.5, E=10, S=5, U=0 • H1 grades: A=10, B=8.75, C=7.5, D=6.25, E=5, S=2.5, U=0 • GP and PW each contribute up to 10 RP • MTL (if taken) only counts if it improves your score
New system (from 2026 A-Levels): • Maximum 70 RP based on best 3 H2 subjects + GP • Project Work becomes pass/fail only (no RP contribution) • 4th content subject only counted if it improves your score University benchmarks (indicative): • Medicine/Law: 87.5-90 RP (old system) • Competitive courses (Business, Computing): 80-87.5 RP • Most courses: 70-80 RP Strong A-Level preparation is essential for competitive university courses.

What age can children start art classes?
Children can start art classes from as young as 3 years old with our Crafty Corner programme (3-5). As they grow, they can progress to Mini Masters (6-8). From age 9 onwards, students can choose Explorative for creative discovery or Professional Art Classes for advanced techniques. See all options on our Art programmes page.
Do children need prior art experience?
No prior experience is needed! We welcome complete beginners and design our programmes to meet students where they are. Our tutors are skilled at nurturing creativity at all levels, from first-time artists to those with years of experience looking to refine their skills.
What materials are provided in art classes?
All basic materials are provided and included in the class fee. This includes paper, paints, brushes, pencils, and other supplies needed for the lesson. Students are welcome to bring their own preferred art supplies if they wish, but it is not required.
How do art classes benefit academic performance?
Research shows that art education supports academic success in multiple ways: (1) Develops fine motor skills important for writing, (2) Builds concentration and focus, (3) Encourages creative problem-solving applicable to all subjects, (4) Reduces stress and improves emotional regulation, and (5) Builds confidence and self-expression skills.
Many parents notice that children who take art classes become more engaged learners overall.
What is the DSA Art Portfolio programme?
Our DSA (Direct School Admission) Art Portfolio programme is designed for students aged 10-18 who want to gain admission to top secondary schools or JCs through their art talent.
The programme includes: (1) Portfolio development with guidance on what admissions officers look for, (2) Skill building in drawing, painting, and other mediums, (3) Interview preparation, and (4) Personalised feedback from experienced art educators. Contact us here to learn more about DSA preparation.
Do you offer adult art classes?
Yes! Art is for everyone, and we welcome adult learners of all skill levels. Adults can choose from Explorative for creative discovery and experimentation, Professional Art Classes for advanced techniques and portfolio development, or join our Art Workshops for specific themes. Our adult classes are relaxed and supportive, focusing on enjoyment and personal growth.
How large are art class sizes?
Our art classes are kept small, typically 3-6 students per class. This ensures every student receives personalised attention, feedback, and guidance from our art tutors. Small classes also allow for better interaction and a more supportive learning environment.
Can my child try art before enrolling?
Yes! We offer trial art classes at $18 so your child can experience our teaching approach and meet our tutors before committing to regular lessons. This also helps us understand your child's current level and interests so we can recommend the most suitable programme. Contact us here to book a trial.

What's the difference between group and private tuition?
Group tuition (3-6 students) offers: peer learning and discussion, more affordable rates, scheduled class times, and social interaction. It works well for students who thrive in group settings and benefit from hearing different perspectives.
Private tuition (1-to-1) offers: fully customised pacing, flexible scheduling, undivided attention, and intensive focus on individual weak areas. It is ideal for students who need significant catching up or have very specific needs.
At Ancourage, we offer both options and can advise on the best fit for your child. Many students do well with group classes, while some benefit from occasional private sessions during exam periods.
Is tuition better than self-study?
Both tuition and self-study have their place in effective learning. Self-study develops independence and is essential for any student. Tuition provides: expert guidance to avoid misconceptions, structured learning with accountability, immediate answers to questions, and exam-specific preparation.
The most successful students typically combine both - using tuition for guidance and structure while developing strong self-study habits. Tuition is particularly valuable when students are struggling, preparing for major exams, or want to excel beyond school curriculum.
How is Ancourage different from other tuition centres?
Ancourage Academy stands out in several ways: (1) Dual-brand offering - we are the only centre offering both academic tuition AND creative art programmes, (2) Small class sizes of 3-6 students for personalised attention, (3) Proprietary ESB methodology developed from years of teaching experience, (4) MOE-registered with qualified tutors, (5) Flexible arrangements with no long-term contracts required, and (6) $18 trial classes to experience before committing.
We believe in earning your trust through quality teaching, not locking you into contracts.
Should I choose enrichment or tuition?
Enrichment programmes go beyond the school syllabus to develop broader skills, creativity, and interests. They are great for: exploration, developing new skills, and providing engaging activities.
Tuition focuses on academic performance within the school syllabus. It is ideal for: catching up with school work, exam preparation, and building subject mastery.
Many families choose both - tuition for core academic subjects and enrichment for holistic development. At Ancourage, our academic tuition and Art by Ancourage programmes complement each other to support well-rounded development.
Online vs in-person tuition: which is better?
Both formats have advantages. In-person tuition offers: direct interaction, hands-on guidance, fewer distractions, and social learning. Online tuition offers: convenience, no travel time, and flexibility for scheduling.
At Ancourage, we offer in-person classes at both our Bishan and Woodlands centres, as well as live online classes via Microsoft Teams. We believe personal interaction leads to great outcomes, but online options provide flexibility for specific circumstances. Contact us here to discuss your needs.

How do I know if my child needs tuition?
Signs that tuition might be helpful include: (1) Consistent struggle with homework or concepts, (2) Falling grades despite effort, (3) Lack of confidence in certain subjects, (4) Difficulty keeping up with school pace, (5) Upcoming major exams (PSLE, O-Levels, A-Levels), or (6) Your child asking for help.
Not every child needs tuition - some thrive with school alone. We offer trial classes at $18 so you can assess if tuition is beneficial before committing.
At what age should tuition start?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some children benefit from early intervention in Primary 1-2 to build strong foundations. Others only need support from Primary 5-6 for PSLE preparation. The key indicators are: your child's current performance, confidence levels, and whether they are struggling to keep up. Contact us for an assessment and advice on whether tuition is appropriate for your child's age and situation.
Will tuition make my child dependent on extra help?
It should not - if done right. Good tuition builds independence, not dependency. The focus should be on teaching students HOW to learn (not just what), building problem-solving skills they can use anywhere, developing self-study habits, and gradually stepping back as confidence grows.
The goal is for students to eventually thrive without tuition. If a centre keeps them dependent forever, that is a red flag.
How much tuition is too much?
You will know it is too much when you see: constant tiredness, no time for play, grades dropping despite more classes, or your child resisting learning altogether. These are signs of burnout.
What works better: • Focus on 1-2 subjects that genuinely need support • Protect rest and play time • Quality beats quantity - one good class outweighs three mediocre ones • Listen to your child's feedback Balance matters more than hours logged.
How do I choose the right tuition centre?
Here is what to look for: • Class sizes - smaller usually means more attention • Teacher qualifications - who is actually teaching? • Clear methodology - do they have a real approach or just 'experienced tutors'? • Trial classes - can you try before committing? • Flexibility - are you locked into long contracts? • Location - is it convenient enough for weekly attendance? • Reviews - what do other parents say?
For what it is worth: $18 trial classes here, 3-6 students per class, no lock-in contracts. You can assess the fit before committing anything.
What results can I expect from tuition?
Results vary depending on the student's starting point, commitment, and consistency. Typically, students who attend regularly can expect: (1) Improved confidence within 1-2 months, (2) Better understanding of concepts within 2-3 months, (3) Grade improvement within 3-6 months of consistent attendance.
We set realistic expectations and provide regular progress updates so you can track your child's development. Remember that sustainable improvement takes time - beware of centres promising overnight results.
How can I help my child with test anxiety?
Test anxiety is common and manageable. Signs include: blanking out during exams despite knowing the material, physical symptoms (stomachaches, headaches before tests), excessive worry days before exams, or avoidance behaviour.
What helps: • Preparation - Anxiety often stems from feeling unprepared. Consistent revision reduces uncertainty • Practise under conditions - Timed mock tests help normalise the exam environment • Breathing techniques - Simple deep breathing before and during exams calms the nervous system • Reframing - Help your child see exams as opportunities to show what they know, not threats • Sleep and nutrition - Basic but crucial, especially the night before Our tutors are trained to recognise anxiety and help students build exam confidence through systematic preparation and positive reinforcement.
How do you support students with learning differences?
We welcome students with diverse learning needs, including dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning differences. Our small class sizes (3-6 students) allow for more individualised attention than typical large-group tuition.
Our approach includes: • Patience and understanding - Our tutors adapt their pace and teaching style • Multi-sensory learning - Visual aids, hands-on activities, and varied explanations • Structured routines - Predictable lesson formats that help students feel secure • Regular breaks - Especially important for students who struggle with sustained attention • Parent communication - We keep you informed about strategies that work For students with formal diagnoses, we are happy to discuss how we can best support their learning. Contact us to discuss your child's specific needs.
My child says they hate school - what should I do?
This is more common than you might think, and it is important to understand the root cause. 'I hate school' can mean many things: struggling academically, social difficulties, feeling bored or unchallenged, or general burnout.
Steps that help: • Listen without judgement - Let them express what is frustrating them • Identify the specific issue - Is it a subject? A teacher? Friends? The workload? • Address the root cause - Academic struggles can be helped with support; social issues may need school involvement • Protect their relationship with learning - Do not add pressure; find what they enjoy about learning • Consider their overall wellbeing - Sleep, play time, and stress levels all affect attitude towards school If academics are part of the problem, tuition that focuses on building confidence (rather than adding pressure) can help shift their attitude.

Does Ancourage Academy offer discounts?
Yes! We offer a $50 referral bonus for every friend you refer who enrols, multi-subject discounts (the more subjects, the more you save), and bulk lesson discounts. See our fee structure and perks for details, or contact us here to learn more.
What happens if I miss a payment?
We will send a gentle reminder after the due date. If payment remains outstanding beyond a grace period of 24 hours, lessons may be temporarily paused and the slot will be released to waitlisted students. We will reinstate the slot once payment is received.
What is Ancourage Academy's refund policy?
Fees are non-refundable once confirmed and transferred. For prepaid packages, any unused lessons may be held as credits for up to six (6) months and may be applied to future programmes at prevailing rates, subject to timetable availability.
