DSA Art Portfolio at Art by Ancourage has achieved a 100% acceptance rate to date — with students admitted to SOTA, Hwa Chong Institution (AEP), SJI, NJC (AEP), Victoria School, Nan Chiau High School, Dunman High School, LASALLE, RISD, and CalArts. We prepare students ages 10–18 for Direct School Admission in Singapore (Bishan & Woodlands). Weekly classes of 3-6 students develop portfolios through drawing, painting, and mixed media with guidance on school-specific requirements. Twenty-one secondary schools accept DSA applications in Visual Arts (MOE, 2025), and approximately 4,400 students—11% of the P6 cohort—were admitted via DSA in 2023, up from 9% in 2019 (MOE Parliamentary Reply, February 2024). The MOE DSA-Sec application period opens in early May and closes in early June, with selection and interviews running through August, and we recommend starting preparation 1-2 years in advance. Portfolio requirements vary by school — SOTA reduced its requirement from 10 to 5 pieces in 2025, now emphasising originality and authentic artistic voice over polish, while schools like ACS(I) and NJC look for creative potential alongside academic strength. Our programme includes dedicated interview preparation and regular portfolio review sessions with our LASALLE-trained instructors to curate the strongest pieces before submission deadlines. "Art education builds problem-solving, patience, and personal expression," note our instructors. Interview preparation included.

Lessons balance technical skill with creative exploration, guiding students to create artworks showcasing originality, observation, and personal expression. Early starters develop discipline, time management, and the complex, layered pieces that stand out to admission panels.

Students build a digital portfolio alongside their physical collection, learning to photograph artwork professionally and write artist statements for each piece. We also guide families through the administrative side of DSA applications, including timeline planning, school research, and understanding selection criteria for their target programmes.

What Is Art by Ancourage's DSA Acceptance Rate?

Art by Ancourage has maintained a 100% DSA and art school acceptance rate to date — every student we have prepared has been admitted to their target school.

  • 7 Singapore secondary schools: SOTA, HCI (AEP), SJI, NJC (AEP), Victoria School, Nan Chiau High, Dunman High
  • 3 art institutions: LASALLE College of the Arts, RISD (USA), CalArts (USA)
  • Preparation: Small groups of 36, drawing/painting/mixed media, interview coaching
  • Locations: Bishan & Woodlands
  • Trial class: From $18

How Do I Prepare a DSA Art Portfolio in Singapore?

Start 12 years before the May application deadline, ideally from Primary 4 or 5. Build a curated portfolio across drawing, painting, and mixed media that demonstrates both technical proficiency and a developing creative voice.

  • 21 schools accept DSA Visual Arts, including 7 AEP and 9 EAP schools (MOE, 2025)
  • ~4,400 students (11% of P6 cohort) admitted via DSA in 2023 (MOE, 2024)
  • Portfolio size varies: SOTA requires 5 pieces (updated 2025); other pathways set their own expectations
  • SOTA selectivity: Roughly 1 in 5 applicants admitted; >50% of 2024 IB cohort scored 38+ points vs ~30 world average (SOTA)
  • At Art by Ancourage: Small groups of 36 at Bishan (152 Bishan Street 11) and Woodlands (548 Woodlands Drive 44). Trial from $18

What Is the Difference Between DSA Art and Regular Admission?

Regular secondary school placement is based on PSLE scores alone. DSA allows students with strong art ability to secure a place before PSLE results — based on portfolio and interview, not academic scores.

  • Regular admission: PSLE score determines school posting — no art portfolio involved
  • DSA Visual Arts: Apply MayJune via MOE DSA-Sec Portal with art portfolio + interview. Gain a place before PSLE results are released
  • SOTA: Admits entirely through its own audition-based process (MarchMay) — no standard PSLE posting route
  • AEP/EAP schools: DSA opens doors to specialised art programmes that would be difficult to access through PSLE scores alone
  • Timeline: Portfolio preparation takes 12 years, starting in Primary 4 or 5

At Art by Ancourage, our instructors guide students through the full DSA process: portfolio development (SOTA requires 5 pieces as of 2025, other pathways set their own expectations), artist statement writing, and mock interview preparation. Students who begin DSA preparation also build strong foundations that benefit their school Art grades, creating a dual advantage.

What Should a DSA Art Portfolio Include?

A strong DSA art portfolio demonstrates range, technical skill, and a developing creative voice. Portfolio size varies by school — SOTA requires 5 pieces (updated 2025), while other pathways set their own expectations.

  • Observational drawings (24 pieces): Still life, portraits, nature studies drawn from life — not copied from photos
  • Creative/imaginative work (24 pieces): Original compositions, illustrations, or conceptual pieces showing personal ideas
  • Different media (23 pieces): Painting (watercolour, acrylic), mixed media, sculpture, or digital art to show versatility
  • Process/sketchbook work (12 pages): Developmental sketches, thumbnails, and explorations showing artistic thinking
  • Personal project (1 piece): A self-directed work reflecting genuine interest and individual voice

Quality matters more than quantity. Each piece should showcase a distinct skill or concept that strengthens the overall narrative of growth and artistic potential.

Which DSA Art Pathway Is Right for Your Child?

Twenty-one secondary schools in Singapore accept DSA applications for Visual Arts (MOE, 2025), spanning four programme types across two levels: DSA-Sec (Primary 6 → Secondary 1) and DSA-JC (Secondary 4 → JC1).

Choose SOTA if your child wants daily arts immersion with an IB pathway and is ready for a 6-year commitment to visual arts as a core curriculum. Choose AEP (NJC, HCI, Victoria School) if your child wants strong art alongside full academics, taking G3 Higher Art through to the SEC examination. Choose EAP (Nan Chiau, Naval Base) for enriched art experiences in Upper Secondary without the full AEP intensity.

DSA-JC: Secondary 4 students can apply to NJC, NYJC, or HCI for H2/H3 Art at JC level, or to SOTA Year 5 for IB Visual Arts.

What Happens at the DSA Art Drawing Test?

Most DSA art pathways include a live drawing or aptitude test after portfolio shortlisting. This is where selection panels assess real-time artistic thinking — not just polished portfolio pieces.

  • SOTA: Since 2025, all applicants attend a mass shortlisting day at the SOTA campus with live drawing tasks. Shortlisted candidates then attend additional drawing tests and interviews (3060 minutes)
  • NJC (AEP): Aptitude test with creative and writing tasks (1 hour 45 minutes)
  • Raffles Institution: Drawing and creativity tasks for Visual Art shortlistees
  • HCI (AEP): In-person interview and selection tests (new from 2026)
  • SJI, VS, Dunman High: Drawing task set by the interviewer, done on the spot during the interview session

What to expect: Observational drawing (e.g., still life object), creative prompt response (e.g., visual stimulus with open interpretation), timed conditions (3060 minutes), materials usually provided by the school.

How to prepare: Daily sketchbook habit (1520 minutes), practice timed still-life sketches, work under unfamiliar conditions, and learn to talk about artistic choices. At Art by Ancourage, our DSA preparation includes mock drawing tests and timed exercises so students arrive confident, not surprised.

Why Choose Art by Ancourage for DSA Preparation?

  • 100% acceptance rate— every student admitted to their target school (SOTA, HCI, SJI, RISD, CalArts & more)
  • Small groups of 36 — personalised feedback every session (typical competitors: 812 students)
  • LASALLE-trained instructor — Angie holds qualifications from LASALLE College of the Arts and Goldsmiths, University of London
  • In-person at two convenient locations — Bishan (CC15/NS17) and Woodlands (TE3)
  • Full DSA support — portfolio, artist statement, interview coaching, and application timeline management
  • Portfolio-focused, not syllabus-focused — school art follows the MOE syllabus with ~2 hours per week. Our programme is entirely focused on building a competitive portfolio across multiple media, with each piece crafted toward specific school requirements
  • We develop talent, not just polish it — most students arrive with a love for drawing but no formal portfolio. We build technique, creative thinking, and portfolio pieces from scratch over 1-2 years

Frequently Asked Questions

22 questions

We recommend starting 1-2 years before the application deadline to build a strong, diverse portfolio that meets target school requirements. Early starters benefit from developing disciplined work habits, refining technical skills across multiple media, and creating more polished pieces. However, motivated students can also achieve excellent results with focused intensive preparation.

Portfolio requirements vary by school. SOTA now requires 5 pieces (reduced from 10 in 2025) and emphasises originality and authentic artistic voice over polish. Other DSA-Visual Arts schools and AEP pathways set their own expectations — requirements are updated annually, so we research each target school's current guidelines. Across all pathways, schools look for technical skill, creativity, range across media, and evidence of artistic growth.

Yes! We prepare students to articulate their artistic journey, discuss individual portfolio pieces with confidence, and demonstrate genuine passion for art. Students practise answering common DSA interview questions, explaining their choice of medium and subject matter, and presenting their creative process and artistic intentions clearly to school admission panels.

Students can apply to secondary schools offering visual arts DSA categories, including SOTA, Hwa Chong Institution (AEP — new from 2026), NJC (AEP), Victoria School, Nan Chiau High School, Dunman High School, SJI, and many more. Our students have been accepted to all of these schools, maintaining a 100% acceptance rate to date. We also prepare portfolios for LASALLE College of the Arts, RISD, and CalArts. We research each target school's specific requirements and tailor portfolio development accordingly. Read our DSA Art portfolio guide.

The number varies by school — SOTA requires 5 pieces (updated 2025), and other DSA-Visual Arts schools set their own expectations that are updated annually. We guide students to build a cohesive portfolio showing technical growth, creative depth, and range across media. Quality matters more than quantity — each piece should showcase a distinct skill or concept that strengthens the overall narrative.

DSA (Direct School Admission) allows students to gain admission to secondary schools based on their art talent before PSLE results are released. Portfolio size varies by school — SOTA requires 5 pieces (updated 2025) emphasising authenticity, while other pathways set their own expectations. We help students build a curated portfolio across drawing, painting, and mixed media, and prepare for school-specific interviews and aptitude tests.

We recommend starting 1-2 years before the DSA application deadline (typically May). Early starters benefit from developing disciplined work habits and creating more refined pieces across multiple mediums. Motivated students can also achieve strong results with intensive preparation over 6-12 months at our Bishan and Woodlands studios.

Many secondary schools in Singapore accept DSA Art applications. Our students have been accepted to SOTA, Hwa Chong Institution (AEP — new from 2026), St. Joseph's Institution, National Junior College (AEP), Victoria School, Nan Chiau High School, and Dunman High School, maintaining a 100% acceptance rate to date. We also prepare portfolios for LASALLE College of the Arts, RISD, and CalArts. We guide families on school selection, application strategy, and portfolio requirements based on each child's artistic strengths and target schools.

Yes. The drawing, painting, and composition skills developed during DSA portfolio preparation directly strengthen work submitted to the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) art exhibition and other national and international art competitions. Many of our DSA students also participate in SYF and use competition achievements to further strengthen their portfolio and school applications.

Art by Ancourage has achieved a 100% DSA and art school acceptance rate to date. Our students have been accepted to SOTA, Hwa Chong Institution (AEP), St. Joseph's Institution, National Junior College (AEP), Nan Chiau High School, Victoria School, Dunman High School, LASALLE College of the Arts, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). We attribute this to personalised portfolio guidance, structured preparation timelines, and thorough interview coaching in small groups of 3-6.

Yes. The portfolio development, artist statement writing, and presentation skills built during DSA preparation transfer directly to tertiary and international art school applications. Our students have been accepted to LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore), RISD (Rhode Island School of Design, USA), and CalArts (California Institute of the Arts, USA). We adjust portfolio strategy based on each institution's specific requirements and selection criteria.

Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) launched the Art Elective Programme (AEP) as a new DSA talent area for the 2026 intake. It is a 4-year programme within the Integrated Programme. Application is via the MOE DSA-Sec Portal. As an early-stage programme, awareness is still building — our DSA preparation covers HCI AEP requirements including portfolio development and interview readiness.

Our classes are small (3-6 students) and we assess each child's readiness during the $18 trial class. If a student needs more foundational work, we recommend starting with our Professional Fine Art programme first rather than rushing an application. This honest, selective approach — combined with personalised portfolio guidance over 1-2 years — is why every student we have taken through DSA preparation has been admitted. We develop art talent, not just polish it.

The drawing, painting, and portfolio skills your child builds during DSA preparation have lasting value beyond any single application. The portfolio can support PSLE posting to art-programme schools, SYF art submissions, and future applications to LASALLE or international art schools. Many of our DSA students also see significant improvement in their school art grades. DSA preparation is an investment in your child's artistic development — it is never wasted.

Primary 4 is actually the ideal starting point. Most of our successfully admitted students began in P4, giving them two full years to develop technique across multiple media, explore their creative voice, and build a portfolio that reflects genuine artistic growth — not last-minute assembly. Starting in P5 is still possible with focused preparation, but P4 gives the strongest foundation.

It is challenging but not impossible. If your child already has drawing and painting experience, an intensive 3-6 month programme can produce a competitive portfolio. We focus on curating your child's strongest existing work alongside 2-3 new pieces created under guidance. Interview preparation becomes especially important for late starters since a confident, articulate portfolio presentation can compensate for a smaller body of work. Book a $18 trial class for an honest assessment of your child's readiness and a realistic timeline.

Yes. DSA-JC allows Secondary 4 students to gain early admission to JCs based on art talent before O-Level results. We prepare portfolios for NJC (AEP — 10-15 works), NYJC (AEP — drawing and written test), HCI (AEP — new from 2026), and SOTA Year 5 (IB pathway — 5 pieces). Our students have been accepted to SOTA, HCI, and NJC through the art pathway. We recommend starting JC portfolio preparation in Secondary 2 or 3.

Most DSA art pathways include a live drawing or aptitude test after portfolio shortlisting. SOTA conducts a mass shortlisting day with live drawing tasks (changed in 2025). NJC runs a 1 hour 45 minute aptitude test with creative and writing tasks. RI requires drawing and creativity tasks. Other schools like SJI, Victoria School, and Dunman High typically include an on-the-spot drawing task during the interview. Tests assess observational drawing, creative prompt response, and ability to work under timed conditions (30-60 minutes). At Art by Ancourage, we prepare students with mock drawing tests, timed exercises, and practice working under unfamiliar conditions.

Primary 4 (Foundation Year): Begin weekly art classes, develop observational drawing fundamentals, start a sketchbook habit, explore painting and mixed media. Primary 5 (Portfolio Building Year): Create portfolio-quality pieces across 2-3 media, enter art competitions like SYF, draft artist statements, attend school open houses to finalise target schools. Primary 6 (Application Year): Curate final portfolio (5-15 pieces depending on school), SOTA applications open in March, MOE DSA-Sec Portal opens in May, drawing tests and interviews run June-August, offers released in September, preference ranking in October, allocation with PSLE results in November.

After receiving a Confirmed Offer (CO) or Wait List (WL) in early September, submit your school preference form via the DSA-Sec Portal by late October (both parents need Singpass). You can rank up to 3 schools that gave CO or WL outcomes. If your first choice is Wait List and second is Confirmed Offer, the CO is protected — you only lose it if you receive the WL school. Once allocated, your child is committed to that school for the programme duration and cannot participate in S1 Posting or transfer after PSLE results.

Rank by genuine preference. Consider: programme type (SOTA 6-year arts immersion vs AEP 4-year art + academics), school culture and environment, daily commute, and your child's long-term goals. SOTA is a full arts commitment with IB pathway. AEP schools like NJC and HCI offer strong academics alongside art specialisation. This decision is binding — your child must attend the allocated school and programme.

H2 Art is an A-Level subject offered through the Art Elective Programme (AEP) at three JCs: National Junior College (NJC), Nanyang Junior College (NYJC), and Hwa Chong Institution (HCI — new from 2026). Students apply via DSA-JC in May-July of their Secondary 4 year. SOTA offers IB Visual Arts as an equivalent at Higher Level. MOE also awards the Art Elective Scholarship to AEP students, providing a $1,000 annual allowance.
