Secondary ChineseTuition
Ancourage Academy's Secondary Chinese tuition covers Sec 1 to Sec 4, including Chinese Language and Higher Chinese at G3, G2, and G1 levels under Full Subject-Based Banding. Chinese (SEC K320, formerly O-Level 1160) and Higher Chinese (SEC K355, formerly O-Level 1116) sit the same-standard SEC exam from 2027. Our small classes of 3-6 students at tuition centres near Bishan MRT and Woodlands South MRT develop reading, writing, and oral skills with bilingual teacher support. Standard Chinese also includes listening preparation. Lower secondary (Sec 1-2) builds vocabulary, essay writing (作文), and comprehension foundations. Upper secondary (Sec 3-4) focuses on SEC preparation — including Paper 1 composition and email writing, Paper 2 comprehension and close passage, and the oral examination. We also prepare students for Higher Chinese examinations, which is recommended for students considering Higher Mother Tongue at JC. Our ESB methodology — combining Ebbinghaus spaced retrieval for character and vocabulary retention, Socratic questioning to develop analytical reading skills, and Bruner's progressive curriculum — builds lasting Chinese language proficiency. All materials are included with no registration fees, and parents receive regular progress updates plus 24/7 WhatsApp homework support.

How We Teach Chinese
Our ESB methodology adapts specifically to chinese learning — building lasting understanding through evidence-based teaching strategies.
Ebbinghaus Memory Theory
For Secondary Chinese, spaced retrieval means revisiting vocabulary, idioms, and essay structures at expanding intervals — so language knowledge remains accessible for O-Level / SEC exams where students must write fluently under time pressure.
Socratic Questioning
In Chinese class, we ask students to justify their word choices, compare different essay approaches, and discuss the writer's intent in comprehension passages — building genuine analytical thinking in Chinese, not just memorisation of model answers.
Bruner's Scaffolding
Chinese language skills scaffold from structured sentence writing to independent essay composition, and from guided comprehension to critical analysis — each stage building confidence so students develop real proficiency even in English-dominant households.
“Chinese at the secondary level shifts from basic comprehension to essay writing, oral discussion, and nuanced textual analysis. Students who maintained strong foundations from primary school adapt quickly — those who didn't need targeted support to close the gap before the SEC exam.”

Common Chinese Challenges Parents Notice
These are the most frequent difficulties we help Secondary students overcome
Cannot write argumentative essays — struggles to structure opinions with logical reasoning in Chinese
Comprehension analysis is shallow — identifies surface meaning but misses deeper intent and tone
Vocabulary range is limited for secondary level — relies on primary-level expressions in composition
Oral fluency gap — can converse casually but cannot articulate formal opinions during video conversation
English-dominant environment makes Chinese retention harder between lessons and during holidays
Higher Chinese demands overwhelm students who are borderline in standard Chinese proficiency

Our Exam Strategies
Composition planning in Chinese — use an outline to organise arguments before writing for coherent essay structure
Comprehension technique — identify question type (inference, vocabulary, evaluation) and match the answering approach
Build an idiom and vocabulary bank — practise using commonly tested expressions naturally in composition writing
Video conversation preparation — practise forming structured opinions about social topics with appropriate vocabulary

Chinese (SEC K320, formerly O-Level 1160) is the standard Mother Tongue exam. Higher Chinese (SEC K355, formerly O-Level 1116) is a more advanced paper covering deeper comprehension, essay writing, and literary analysis. A grade of C6 or better in both Higher Chinese and English earns 2 bonus points for JC admission (L1R5/L1R4). A D7 or better in Higher Chinese exempts students from Mother Tongue at JC level. The SEC replaces the O-Level from 2027, with the same exam standards.
Our trial class is currently free (usually $18). Regular fees vary by level — Sec 1-2 foundational Chinese and Sec 3-4 O-Level / SEC Chinese preparation have different rates, with Higher Chinese available at the same price point. Contact us for the latest pricing. We keep our rates competitive for small-group Chinese tuition of 3-6 students at our Bishan and Woodlands centres.
Under Full SBB, all levels sit the SEC exam from 2027: G3 Chinese (K320) is at the same standard as the former O-Level, G2 (K220) covers the former N(A) curriculum, and G1 (K120) focuses on practical communication. We teach at each G-level with tailored materials, and support students who are transitioning between G-levels based on their progress.
Sec 1 is ideal for building secondary-level writing and comprehension skills. The jump from primary to secondary Chinese is significant — vocabulary demands increase, essay types change from narrative to argumentative, and comprehension passages become more complex. Early support prevents gaps from compounding.
Our bilingual teachers can explain complex Chinese grammar rules and essay structures in English when needed. This is especially valuable for English-dominant students who understand concepts intellectually but struggle to express them in Chinese. The bilingual bridge builds confidence while strengthening Chinese proficiency.
Yes. The SEC G3 Chinese oral exam (same format as the former O-Level) includes Reading Aloud and Video Conversation. We practise reading with proper pronunciation and expression, and train students to form structured opinions in response to video stimuli — covering current affairs, social issues, and everyday scenarios with appropriate vocabulary and fluency.
