What Makes Us Different

Our proven teaching methodology combines evidence-based approaches for maximum learning effectiveness

🧠

Ebbinghaus Memory Theory

Planned retrieval practice at expanding intervals — weekly topic quizzes, monthly mixed reviews, and term revision cycles — timed to strengthen memory just before it weakens, so knowledge stays accessible under exam pressure.

💭

Socratic Questioning

Probing questions that surface each student's reasoning — 'Why did you choose that method?' and 'What if the question changed this detail?' — revealing gaps in understanding early so misconceptions are corrected before they compound.

📈

Bruner's Scaffolding

Graduated support from fully guided to fully independent — tutors first model the solution, then prompt during practice, then observe silently — systematically building competence while ensuring students do not develop reliance on hints.

Key Transition

Lower secondary demands deeper engagement with texts — Sec 1 students progress from surface comprehension to sophisticated inference and critical evaluation.

Secondary 1 and 2 Chinese is a critical period — students either maintain their primary school momentum or begin disengaging from the language. We keep students connected to Chinese through engaging discussion topics, structured essay practice, and oral preparation that builds real-world communication skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Secondary Chinese introduces longer texts, expository and argumentative writing, and formal oral presentations. The focus shifts from narrative to analytical skills, requiring students to evaluate viewpoints and construct arguments rather than simply retell stories. Read our secondary Chinese tuition guide.

Even strong PSLE students often benefit from transition support. Secondary Chinese demands different skills—longer sustained reading, formal writing formats, and class discussions. We help students bridge this gap and build confidence quickly.

Sec 1 introduces formal functional writing including letters, reports, notices, and speeches. Students learn format conventions and develop the ability to adapt their writing style for different purposes and audiences.

Our Sec 1 Chinese classes run weekly for 2 hours at both our Bishan and Woodlands centres. Each class has 3-6 students, giving your child focused attention as they build secondary-level foundations. See our pricing page for fees, or try a trial class — free (usually $18).

With only 3-6 students per class, our tutors identify each student's specific challenges quickly. In Sec 1, we focus on bridging the primary-to-secondary transition and building strong Chinese study habits. Our ESB methodology uses Ebbinghaus spaced review for long-term retention, Socratic questioning for deeper understanding, and Bruner's scaffolding for systematic skill building — targeting root causes rather than surface symptoms.
