Adult Art Classes in Singapore: A Beginner's Guide

Art classes for adults in Singapore are designed for all skill levels, from absolute beginners who have never held a brush to returning creatives rediscovering a childhood passion. The key is choosing between explorative programmes (creative discovery and experimentation) and professional fine art tracks (structured technical training).

As the founder of Art by Ancourage and a graduate of LASALLE College of the Arts and Goldsmiths, University of London, I have taught hundreds of adult students across both tracks. The most common thing I hear in a first lesson is "I can't draw" — and it is almost never true.

Who Takes Adult Art Classes in Singapore?

Adult art students in Singapore range from working professionals seeking a creative outlet to retirees exploring a lifelong interest. At Art by Ancourage, roughly half of adult students are complete beginners, while the other half have some prior experience — either from school art classes decades ago or from casual art jamming sessions that left them wanting more structured learning.

Common motivations include:

  • Stress relief: Research from the World Health Organization confirms that art-making reduces anxiety and depression while boosting self-esteem
  • Skill development: Adults who want to draw or paint with confidence, not just follow along in a one-off session
  • Social connection: Small-group classes provide community without the pressure of large workshops
  • Portfolio building: Career changers or mature students preparing for art school applications
  • Cognitive health: For older adults, regular creative practice supports memory and cognitive function

Explorative vs Professional: Which Track Is Right?

The biggest decision for adult beginners is whether to start with an explorative or professional track. These are not quality tiers — they serve different goals.

Explorative Art Classes

Explorative art classes at Art by Ancourage suit adults who want creative discovery without the pressure of technical perfection. Students experiment with drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, and sculpture. The emphasis is on finding your artistic voice and building confidence. Class sizes are kept to 3-6 students for individual attention.

Professional Fine Art Classes

Professional Fine Art Classes follow a structured curriculum covering realism, portraiture, perspective drawing, and advanced painting methods. This track suits adults who want measurable technical progress — learning to render light and shadow accurately, understand colour theory deeply, or build a portfolio. The same small class sizes of 3-6 apply.

Many students start with Explorative to build comfort and transition to Professional once they know what they want to focus on. Others stay in Explorative long-term because creative experimentation is exactly what they need.

What to Expect in Your First Class

A typical first session at Art by Ancourage begins with a conversation about your goals, followed by a guided exercise matched to your level.

  1. Goal-setting chat: Your instructor asks what drew you to art, what you hope to achieve, and any concerns you have (the "I can't draw" conversation usually happens here)
  2. Skill assessment: A simple drawing or painting exercise reveals your current strengths — not to judge, but to plan
  3. Guided practice: You work on a project suited to your level with real-time feedback. No following a YouTube video alone

All core materials — pencils, paints, brushes, paper, and canvases — are provided. You do not need to buy anything before your first lesson. See the FAQ on materials for details.

How Art Classes Differ from Art Jamming

Art jamming is entertainment; art classes are education. This distinction matters because many adults try art jamming first and walk away either delighted (but not learning) or frustrated (because the result did not match expectations).

Feature Art Jamming Art Classes
Instruction Minimal or none Structured, personalised feedback
Skill progression No curriculum Progressive skill building
Class size 10-30+ people 3-6 students
Outcome One finished piece Transferable techniques
Frequency One-off sessions Weekly continuity

Art jamming is a perfectly valid recreational activity. But if you want to actually improve your drawing or painting, structured classes with a qualified instructor and progressive curriculum make the difference. Read more about adult art classes at Art by Ancourage.

Focused Classes: Drawing, Painting, and Mixed Media

Adults who prefer to focus on a single medium can join dedicated classes that build technical depth.

  • Drawing Classes: Composition, perspective, shading, and observation. The foundation for all visual art
  • Painting Classes: Acrylic and watercolour methods including colour mixing, brush control, and layering
  • Mixed Media: Texture, collage, layering, and conceptual art for adventurous creatives

These focused classes pair well with both Explorative and Professional tracks. Many students attend a focused class alongside their main programme to accelerate progress in a specific area.

Workshops for Adults Who Want to Try First

If committing to weekly classes feels like a big step, Art by Ancourage workshops offer standalone sessions to test the waters. Workshops run periodically and cover specific themes — watercolour landscapes, portrait sketching, mixed media experiments — in a single sitting. They are beginner-friendly and all materials are included.

Workshops are not a substitute for regular classes (you cannot build sustained skill from one-off sessions), but they are an excellent way to experience the teaching style and studio environment before enrolling.

The Mental Health Benefits of Art for Adults

Structured art practice delivers measurable mental health benefits beyond simple relaxation. A comprehensive review published by the World Health Organization found that art-making activities reduce mental distress, depression, and anxiety while enhancing both individual and social well-being.

These benefits are not limited to art therapy. Regular creative practice — drawing, painting, sculpting — activates the same neurological pathways. The repetitive, focused motions involved in drawing and painting induce a meditative state that lowers cortisol levels. In Singapore's high-pressure work culture, a weekly art class can function as structured decompression.

For older adults specifically, sustained creative engagement supports memory and cognitive function. Several students at Art by Ancourage in their 60s and 70s describe their weekly class as the highlight of their week — not just for the art, but for the social connection and mental stimulation.

Locations: Bishan and Woodlands Studios

Art by Ancourage operates studios in both Bishan and Woodlands, making classes accessible across Singapore.

Bishan Centre

Located at 152 Bishan St 11, a 10-minute walk from Bishan MRT (NS17/CC15). Convenient for adults working or living in Central Singapore — Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh, Thomson, and Serangoon are all within easy reach. Evening and weekend slots suit working professionals.

Woodlands Centre

At Vista Point near Woodlands South MRT (TE3). Ideal for adults in the North — Admiralty, Marsiling, Sembawang, and Yishun. The same curriculum and class sizes apply at both centres.

Both locations offer adult classes on weekends and selected weekday evenings to work around professional schedules.

How to Get Started

The simplest way to begin is a trial class — it costs $18 and gives you a full session with an instructor to assess your level and goals.

  1. Book a trial: Choose Bishan or Woodlands and pick a time that works
  2. Attend your session: No preparation needed. All materials provided. Wear something you do not mind getting paint on
  3. Discuss your path: After the trial, your instructor recommends whether Explorative or Professional Fine Art Classes suits your goals

There is no pressure to enrol after a trial. Many adults take a week to decide, and that is perfectly fine. You can also WhatsApp us if you have any questions.

Common Questions About Adult Art Classes

Am I too old to start learning art?

No. Art by Ancourage teaches students from age 9 to 99+. Several of Art by Ancourage's most enthusiastic students started in their 50s and 60s with zero prior experience. The Professional and Explorative tracks are designed for adults at any starting point.

I have not drawn since secondary school — will I be behind?

Classes at Art by Ancourage are not group-paced. With 3-6 students per class, your instructor tailors each session to your current level. Whether you last drew 5 years ago or 30 years ago, you start where you are. See the FAQ on prior experience.

How long before I see real improvement?

Most students notice meaningful progress within 4-6 weekly sessions. Drawing accuracy, colour confidence, and compositional awareness improve quickly with consistent practice and structured feedback. Long-term mastery is a journey, but early wins come faster than most adults expect.

Can I switch between Explorative and Professional?

Yes. Students can move between tracks at any time. Some attend both simultaneously — Explorative for creative freedom and Professional for technical rigour.
