Mixed Media Art at Art by Ancourage in Singapore (Bishan & Woodlands) offers small groups of 3-6 students combining different materials and techniques to create unique artworks. Weekly sessions explore collage, assemblage, texture layering, and experimental forms through guided experimentation. The Singapore government committed $100 million in additional arts funding under the Our SG Arts Plan 2023-2027, reflecting growing national investment in creative development (MCCY). Students learn to combine traditional art materials—paint, ink, charcoal, and pastel—with found objects such as fabric scraps, natural materials, and recycled items to create richly textured, layered compositions. Collage techniques range from precise paper cutting to spontaneous torn-paper layering, while texture building includes gesso modelling and sand embedding. Assemblage projects challenge students to think three-dimensionally, transforming flat compositions into sculptural works. Experimental approaches are encouraged—students test unconventional combinations and embrace happy accidents as creative opportunities. "Mixed media pushes creative boundaries—students learn that art has no rules when combining materials with intention," note our LASALLE-trained instructors.

Combine different materials and techniques to create unique artworks. Explore collage, assemblage, and experimental art forms.

Each project begins with a conceptual brief that challenges students to explore a theme—identity, nature, memory, or transformation—through their choice of materials and techniques. This concept-driven approach develops the critical and creative thinking skills valued in DSA portfolios and higher art education, producing works with genuine depth and personal meaning.

Every student has a unique creative voice. Our role is to develop strong technical foundations — drawing, painting, composition — so that voice can come through with confidence. In small groups of 3–6, we see each student clearly and guide their growth personally.

Our Teaching Approach

Three proven pedagogical methods adapted for visual arts education

🧠

Ebbinghaus

Self-directed retrieval scheduling where students learn to identify their own weak areas and plan review cycles accordingly — developing the metacognitive skills essential for A-Level success and independent university study.

💭

Socratic

Rigorous dialectic questioning where students must justify their reasoning and consider counterarguments — 'What evidence supports this?' and 'Where could this logic break down?' — building the analytical rigour expected in higher education.

📈

Bruner

Minimal scaffolding with maximum autonomy — tutors pose challenging problems and observe, intervening only when students are genuinely stuck — preparing students to structure their own approach to unfamiliar problems.

Mixed Media Art Classes in Singapore

Mixed media art classes at Art by Ancourage combine drawing, painting, collage, texture, and found-object assemblage into layered, conceptual artworks. These classes suit teens, adults, and seniors who want to push beyond traditional drawing and painting into experimental, process-driven art-making. Each 1.5-hour session explores a different technique — layering acrylic with paper and fabric, creating textured surfaces with modelling paste and ink, building collage compositions from photographs and ephemera, or combining watercolour washes with pen-and-ink detail. The emphasis is on creative problem-solving and developing a personal artistic voice rather than replicating a single medium perfectly. Classes run in small groups of 3–6 at Art by Ancourage's Bishan and Woodlands studios, with individual feedback on composition, colour balance, and material choices. Mixed media is particularly popular with students who have some drawing or painting experience and want to expand their creative range, as well as complete beginners who are drawn to tactile, hands-on art-making. The progressive curriculum builds conceptual thinking and portfolio diversity — skills that are valuable for DSA art applications, university portfolios, and personal creative development. Weekday and weekend sessions are available. All materials are provided. Trial classes are available from $18.
