The June Holiday Art Camp at Ancourage Academy's Art by Ancourage offers 14 themed artworks across the June school holiday window each year. Each artwork pairs a real artistic discipline — drawing, painting, mixed media, or paper craft — with a kid-recognisable theme. This guide walks through every theme with suggested ages, mediums, and which format (Day Camp vs Lesson Package) it fits.
If you have already chosen a programme, the dedicated Holiday Art Camp page shows current and upcoming camp availability at Bishan and Woodlands. This article is for parents who want to understand what their child will actually make — and which theme suits which age — before they book.
How we organised the 14 themes
The 14 artworks are grouped into four theme groups. Day Camp students choose from three groups (Nature Creations, Portrait Magic, Creative Keepsakes) — one artwork per 5-hour day. Lesson Package students unlock the fourth group (Fine Arts & Mixed Media) and can rotate across multiple artworks over 4 / 12 / 24 sessions.
| Theme group | Day Camp? | Lesson Package? | Artworks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nature Creations | Yes | Yes | Zootopia Paper Collage · Hoppers Paper Collage |
| Portrait Magic | Yes | Yes | Pokémon Designer Studio · Kpop Demon Hunter Pop-Up Portrait |
| Creative Keepsakes | Yes | Yes | Sanrio Acrylic Lamp · 3D Paper Craft Bird Cage |
| Fine Arts & Mixed Media | — | Yes | Anime/Manga · Still Life · Polar Bear · Chinese Gongbi · Submarine · Zentangle Bird · 3D Butterfly · Owl in Tree |
Portrait Magic & Character Creation
Portrait Magic suits confident drawers aged 8 and up — the work demands proportional thinking, character anatomy, and patience for multi-step construction.
Kpop Demon Hunter Pop-Up Portrait — ages 8+
A pop-out portrait workshop where students create characters that lift off the page. The project explores layering, colouring, and adding depth — students cut, paint, and construct a layered portrait that holds 3D characteristics. Suited to confident drawers age 8 and up who can plan a multi-step build without losing patience midway.
Pokémon Designer Studio — ages 8+
Students design original creatures inspired by character-design conventions, exploring shapes, features, and colour to invent unique characters. A fun and creative session perfect for young fans of imaginative design — and a good first taste of how professional concept artists develop a brief into a finished character sheet.
Enchanted Nature Creations
Nature Creations are paper-and-paint collage projects that fit ages 5 to 7 — they reward steady scissor work and a willingness to layer rather than perfect a single drawing.
Zootopia Paper Collage — ages 6+
Animated-style animal characters made by painting, cutting, and assembling parts into a layered collage. Builds composition, layering, and fine-motor planning. Most suitable for upper-primary children who can handle precise scissor work and visualise how separate cut shapes will come together as one finished image.
Hoppers Paper Collage — ages 5+
A beaver character built from painted paper cut into shapes and assembled into a layered collage. Focus is on pattern, texture, and composition while building fine motor skills. The simpler subject matter and forgiving paper medium make it the right entry point for kindergarten-aged children stepping into structured art for the first time.
Creative Keepsakes
Creative Keepsakes are take-home objects — a working LED lamp and a 3D paper bird cage — that reward children who like seeing a finished, usable result rather than a flat drawing.
Sanrio Acrylic Lamp — ages 4+
A light-up acrylic lamp where students design with acrylic markers on a clear board mounted on an LED base. The session explores line work, creativity, and how light enhances drawings. Suitable for the youngest age band (4+) since acrylic markers on clear board are forgiving — mistakes wipe off, and the LED base instantly makes any drawing feel finished.
3D Paper Craft Bird Cage — ages 5+
A birdcage scene students decorate inside, exploring colour and mediums while bringing a small environment to life through layering and detail. The 3D structure introduces basic spatial thinking — children plan front, middle, and back layers — without requiring the precision drawing skills the older-age artworks demand.
Fine Arts & Mixed Media (Lesson Package only)
These projects suit longer multi-session pacing — the depth of technique benefits from continuity. Available only inside the 4-, 12-, or 24-lesson packages.
Anime / Manga Drawing Class — ages 8+
Step-by-step instruction in anime-style character drawing using reference images. Covers proportions, facial features, expressions, and line work — the foundations a young anime fan needs before they can draw recognisable original characters of their own.
Still Life Fine-Arts Session — ages 8+
Observational pencil drawing of everyday objects — proportions, shapes, light, shadow. Builds the foundation that underlies every other artistic discipline. Children who complete a still-life unit consistently find it easier to tackle every other medium afterwards: the eye-training transfers.
Polar Bear Mixed Media — ages 4+
A typical structured-lesson sample where students are guided step-by-step through drawing and colouring. Reflects how foundational skills are taught at Art by Ancourage — small steps, visible progress, and a finished piece children are genuinely proud of at the end.
Chinese Painting Gongbi-inspired Class — ages 6+
A simplified version of Gongbi painting — careful outlining, gentle brush control, and layering of colour to create detailed and elegant artworks. A meaningful introduction to a centuries-old Chinese tradition, accessible for primary-aged students without prior brush-painting experience.
Submarine Mixed Media — ages 5+
An undersea scene where students explore drawing and colouring techniques in a structured creative classroom setting. The aquatic theme encourages experimentation with blues and greens, and the mixed-media format welcomes happy accidents that strict pencil drawing would punish.
Zentangle Bird — ages 6+
Students fill a chosen animal with detailed zentangle patterns, then enhance with soft watercolour washes. Builds focus, control, and creative pattern-making. A favourite among children who enjoy meditative, repetitive line work — and a useful counterweight to the noisier cut-and-paste artworks.
3D Butterfly + Flower Garden Painting — ages 5+
An abstract flower-garden workshop using acrylic paints. Students explore colour blending and expressive brushwork, then add 3D paper butterflies for depth. The contrast between loose painting and precise paper construction gives children a chance to practise both right-brained and left-brained skills in a single project.
3D Paper Craft Owl in a Tree — ages 5+
An owl-themed 3D artwork combining painting and simple construction to create depth. Children build outwards from a flat painted base — a gentle introduction to relief and dimension that prepares them for more demanding 3D builds later.
How to choose the right artwork for your child's age
Ages are guidelines, not gates. A confident 6-year-old can attempt an 8+ artwork with parental support; a child who needs more time is welcome to repeat a 5+ project a second time and grow new skills inside it. The chart below is the recommended starting point — let the child's interest in the theme drive the final choice.
| Age | Best-fit artworks |
|---|---|
| 4+ | Sanrio Acrylic Lamp · Polar Bear Mixed Media |
| 5+ | Hoppers Paper Collage · 3D Paper Craft Bird Cage · Submarine Mixed Media · 3D Butterfly · Owl in Tree |
| 6+ | Zootopia Paper Collage · Chinese Gongbi · Zentangle Bird |
| 8+ | Kpop Demon Hunter · Pokémon Designer Studio · Anime/Manga · Still Life |
Day Camp vs Lesson Package — which fits which artwork?
The Holiday Day Camp is a 5-hour single-day immersion (10am – 3pm, lunch included, $208 early bird when paid 14 days ahead / $268 regular). Students complete one artwork in one day. Day Camp draws from three theme groups: Nature Creations, Portrait Magic, and Creative Keepsakes.
Lesson Packages are 4 / 12 / 24 sessions of 2 hours each, scheduled flexibly across the June holiday window and shareable with friends and family — a 12-pack can split between two children. Lesson Packages unlock the full 14-artwork catalogue, including the Fine Arts & Mixed Media group (anime, still life, Chinese Gongbi, zentangle, etc.). Children who already attend Mini Masters or Crafty Corner regular classes typically prefer Lesson Packages because the pacing matches what they are used to.
Frequently asked questions
Below are the questions parents ask most often before booking the June Holiday Art Camp — venue, materials, instructors, reservation, and rescheduling.
Where is the June Holiday Art Camp held?
The June Holiday Art Camp at Ancourage Academy runs at our two studios — Bishan (152 Bishan Street 11, #01-215, Singapore 570152, near Bishan MRT) and Woodlands (Vista Point, 548 Woodlands Drive 44, #02-16, Singapore 730548, near Woodlands South MRT TE3). Bishan camp days are Wednesday/Thursday/Friday; Woodlands runs Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday across the June holiday weeks.
Are art materials included in the camp fee?
Yes — all art materials are provided at every Day Camp and Lesson Package session, including paper, paint, brushes, acrylic markers, scissors, glue, and any specialty items required by a specific artwork (LED bases for the Sanrio Lamp, paper-craft kits for the Bird Cage, and so on). Students bring only themselves and an apron or old clothes since acrylics and inks can stain.
Who teaches the camp?
Every session is led by a LASALLE-trained instructor at Art by Ancourage. Our founder Angie holds a fine-arts qualification from LASALLE College of the Arts, and our teaching framework follows the disciplines outlined in the MOE refreshed primary art syllabus. Many families return every June, September, and year-end break for new themed projects.
How do I reserve a spot for my child?
Each artwork session has a small group cap, so popular themes — Pokémon Designer Studio and the Sanrio Acrylic Lamp in particular — fill within days of opening. Visit the Holiday Art Camp page to see current or upcoming availability across both studios, then WhatsApp our team to confirm the date, age band, theme, and payment. Early-bird pricing ($208 instead of $268) requires payment at least 14 days ahead of the session date.
What if I need a refund or schedule change?
Sessions can be rescheduled with at least 48 hours' notice — we will move your child's slot to another available date in the June window at no extra cost. Refunds are handled case-by-case for genuine emergencies. WhatsApp our team via the camp page to discuss either option.
