Acrylic Painting Classes
Art by Ancourage · All Ages
Content reviewed: Mar 2026
Acrylic painting classes at Art by Ancourage are available across all our art programmes — from playful acrylic exploration in Crafty Corner (ages 3-5) and structured painting in Mini Masters (ages 6-8), to creative experimentation in Explorative Art and advanced technique in Professional Fine Art (ages 9-99+).
Acrylic is the most versatile and beginner-friendly painting medium — it dries quickly, allows easy layering and correction, works on canvas and paper, and can mimic both watercolour transparency and oil painting richness. Students learn colour mixing, brushwork, layering, blending, texture creation, and composition through progressive projects.
Classes run weekly in small groups of 3-6 at our Bishan studio (152 Bishan Street 11, near Bishan MRT CC15/NS17) and Woodlands studio (Vista Point, 548 Woodlands Drive 44, near Woodlands South MRT TE3). All materials provided. Trial classes from $18.

“Every student has a unique creative voice. Our role is to develop strong technical foundations — drawing, painting, composition — so that voice can come through with confidence. In small groups of 3–6, we see each student clearly and guide their growth personally.”

Our Teaching Approach
Three proven pedagogical methods adapted for visual arts education
Ebbinghaus
Students revisit core acrylic skills — colour mixing, brushwork, layering — through varied projects each week, reinforcing technique until it becomes second nature.
Socratic
Instructors ask students to observe and compare paint behaviour: "What happens when you layer wet-on-dry versus wet-on-wet?" — building understanding through experimentation rather than instruction alone.
Bruner
Lessons scaffold from flat colour blocking and simple still life through to textured impasto, glazing effects, and multi-session canvas compositions, reducing guidance as confidence grows.

Acrylic Painting Classes in Singapore
Acrylic painting classes at Art by Ancourage are available across all age groups and skill levels — from playful acrylic exploration in Crafty Corner (ages 3-5) and structured painting in Mini Masters (ages 6-8), to creative experimentation in Explorative Art and advanced technique mastery in Professional Fine Art (ages 9-99+). Acrylic is widely considered the most beginner-friendly painting medium: it dries quickly, allows easy layering and correction, works on canvas and paper, and can mimic both watercolour transparency and oil painting richness. Students learn colour mixing, brushwork, layering, blending, texture creation, and composition through progressive weekly projects guided by a LASALLE-trained instructor. Singapore's students ranked first globally in Creative Thinking in the OECD PISA 2022 assessment — visual arts education contributes to this creative capacity. Classes run in small groups of 3-6 at the Bishan studio (152 Bishan Street 11, near Bishan MRT CC15/NS17) and Woodlands studio (Vista Point, 548 Woodlands Drive 44, near Woodlands South MRT TE3). Weekday and weekend sessions are available at both locations. All acrylic paints, brushes, canvases, palettes, and aprons are provided — you do not need to purchase or bring anything. Trial classes are available from $18.
By Age Group
Crafty Corner (3-5)
Children explore acrylic through playful projects — finger painting, sponge stamping, and chunky brushwork on large surfaces. Focus is on colour discovery, sensory engagement, and building confidence with paint.
Mini Masters (6-8)
Structured acrylic painting on canvas. Students learn to mix colours, control brushwork, and complete guided paintings from sketch to finish. Projects build fine motor skills and creative decision-making.
Explorative (9-99+)
Ideal for beginners and hobbyists. Students discover acrylic fundamentals — layering, blending, texture — through creative projects chosen with the instructor. A relaxed, exploratory approach to building painting skills.
Professional (9-99+)
Advanced acrylic technique for serious students. Impasto, glazing, palette knife work, and large-format canvas painting. Portfolio development and exhibition-quality work for those seeking mastery.
Acrylic Painting vs. Watercolour Painting
Acrylic and watercolour are both water-based mediums, but they behave very differently on the surface. Acrylic paint is opaque and fast-drying — you can layer colours on top of each other, paint over mistakes easily, and build rich textures using techniques like impasto and palette knife work. This makes acrylic exceptionally forgiving and satisfying for beginners who want visible results quickly. Watercolour paint is transparent and luminous — the white of the paper shows through the pigment, creating delicate effects that reward careful planning and a lighter touch. Watercolour requires more patience and precision because you cannot simply paint over errors. Both mediums are taught across our programmes at Art by Ancourage, and many students explore both to develop versatile painting skills. For first-time painters of any age, we generally recommend starting with acrylic — it builds confidence, teaches colour mixing and brushwork fundamentals, and provides a strong foundation before transitioning to the more demanding transparency of watercolour or the slow-drying richness of oil.
