Every student has a unique creative voice. Our role is to develop strong technical foundations — drawing, painting, composition — so that voice can come through with confidence. In small groups of 3–6, we see each student clearly and guide their growth personally.

Our Teaching Approach

Three proven pedagogical methods adapted for visual arts education

🧠

Ebbinghaus

Students revisit core watercolour techniques — wet-on-wet washes, colour mixing, glazing — across different subjects each week, building muscle memory for brush control and water management through natural repetition.

💭

Socratic

Instructors prompt students to observe how water and pigment interact: "What happens when you add water to a dried glaze? How does tilting the paper change the wash?" — building intuition for a medium that rewards observation over control.

📈

Bruner

Lessons scaffold from flat washes and single-colour exercises through layered glazing and wet-on-wet blending to complex botanical and landscape compositions, with the instructor gradually stepping back as students develop their own relationship with the medium.

Watercolour Classes in Singapore

Watercolour classes at Art by Ancourage are available across all our art programmes for ages 3 to 99+. Young children in Crafty Corner (ages 3-5) explore watercolour through playful painting projects using child-friendly sets. Mini Masters students (ages 6-8) develop structured watercolour techniques including colour mixing and brush control through guided projects. From age 9 onwards, students in Explorative Art discover watercolour as part of creative multi-medium exploration, while Professional Fine Art students pursue advanced watercolour mastery — glazing, wet-on-wet layering, botanical and landscape subjects, and portfolio-quality painting. All classes are led by a LASALLE-trained instructor who adapts each session to the student's age and skill level. Techniques taught include wet-on-wet washes, dry brush texture, colour mixing, glazing for depth, and composition planning. MOE's refreshed Primary Art Syllabus (2024) expanded the range of art mediums in schools, reinforcing the importance of hands-on painting skills. Classes run weekly in small groups of 3-6 at the Bishan studio (152 Bishan Street 11, near Bishan MRT CC15/NS17) and Woodlands studio (Vista Point, 548 Woodlands Drive 44, near Woodlands South MRT TE3). Weekday and weekend sessions are available. All watercolour materials — professional paint sets, quality cold-pressed paper, brushes, palettes — are provided. Trial classes are available from $18.

By Age Group

Crafty Corner (Ages 3-5)

Playful watercolour exploration using child-friendly paint sets. Children experiment with colour mixing, wet paper effects, and simple washes — building confidence and fine motor skills through creative painting projects.

Mini Masters (Ages 6-8)

Guided watercolour projects that develop brush control, colour blending, and basic techniques like flat washes and wet-on-wet. Students paint animals, landscapes, and imaginative scenes with increasing independence.

Explorative (Ages 9-99+)

For beginners and creative explorers. Students discover watercolour alongside other mediums — learning washes, glazing, and colour theory at a relaxed pace. Ideal for those new to watercolour or returning after a break.

Professional (Ages 9-99+)

Structured watercolour mastery for committed students. Advanced techniques — wet-on-wet layering, glazing for luminosity, botanical and landscape painting — with portfolio development and personalised instructor feedback.

Watercolour Painting vs. Acrylic Painting

Watercolour and acrylic are the two most popular painting mediums for students in Singapore, and each offers a distinct creative experience. Watercolour uses transparent water-based pigments on paper — the white of the paper shows through the paint, creating luminous, glowing effects. It rewards careful planning, a light touch, and an understanding of how water and pigment interact. Techniques like wet-on-wet washes, glazing, and dry brush texture give watercolour its characteristic softness and depth. Acrylic paint is opaque and applied on canvas — you can layer over mistakes, build thick impasto texture, and achieve bold, saturated colour quickly. Acrylic dries fast, is forgiving for beginners, and works on virtually any surface. Watercolour tends to suit students who enjoy patience, subtlety, and the meditative quality of watching colour flow across wet paper. Acrylic suits students who prefer immediate, confident results and bold visual impact. Both mediums are taught at Art by Ancourage across all programmes, and many students explore both to discover which resonates most with their creative voice.

Frequently Asked Questions

9 questions

Yes. Watercolour is one of the most rewarding mediums for beginners because it teaches colour sensitivity, brush control, and patience from the very first session. Our instructor guides you step-by-step through techniques like flat washes, wet-on-wet blending, and colour mixing — building confidence before progressing to more advanced methods like glazing and dry brush texture.

Children as young as 3 can begin exploring watercolour in our Crafty Corner programme, where they use child-friendly watercolour sets for playful painting projects. Mini Masters students (ages 6-8) develop more structured watercolour techniques. From age 9, students in Explorative and Professional classes work with professional-grade watercolour paints and paper.

Watercolour uses transparent water-based pigments on paper — the white of the paper shows through the paint, creating luminous effects. Acrylic is opaque and applied on canvas — you can layer over mistakes and build thick texture. Watercolour rewards planning and light touch; acrylic is more forgiving and immediate. Both are taught at Art by Ancourage and many students explore both mediums across sessions.

All materials are included — professional watercolour paint sets, quality watercolour paper (cold-pressed), round and flat brushes in multiple sizes, palettes, water containers, and masking tape. You simply turn up and paint.

It depends on your age and goals. Crafty Corner (ages 3-5) introduces watercolour through play. Mini Masters (ages 6-8) develops technique through guided projects. Explorative Art (ages 9-99+) is ideal for beginners who want creative discovery. Professional Fine Art (ages 9-99+) suits students seeking advanced watercolour mastery and portfolio development. Contact us and we will recommend the right fit.

Watercolour is often considered the most challenging painting medium because mistakes are harder to cover and you must plan light areas in advance. However, this teaches valuable skills — patience, planning, and colour sensitivity — that make you a better painter in any medium.

Watercolour excels at botanicals, florals, landscapes, seascapes, and atmospheric scenes where soft gradients and luminous transparency create beautiful effects. In our classes you explore a range of subjects to discover what you enjoy painting most.

Muddy colours are the most common beginner challenge and usually result from overworking the paint or mixing too many colours together. Our instructor teaches the less-is-more approach — working with clean water, limiting your palette, and allowing layers to dry between applications.

Yes. Techniques like loose floral painting, wet-on-wet galaxies, and botanical illustration that you see trending online are all covered in our programme. Our instructor breaks down these techniques step-by-step so you achieve the same beautiful results.
