H1 Chinese Language (syllabus 8655) is examined in two papers, and its two written sections carry 70% of the grade, so essay planning and comprehension technique are where preparation pays most. Paper 1 holds the essay (60 marks, 30%) and the language-use and comprehension section (80 marks, 40%), each 1 hour 30 minutes, and Paper 2 holds the oral (50 marks, 25%) and listening comprehension (10 marks, 5%). Plan the 议论文 in five steps (题型分析, 审题, 立意, 结构, 论据) before writing a sentence. Ancourage Academy teaches H1 Chinese to JC students at its Bishan and Woodlands centres, and this guide sets out the paper exactly as Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) describes it, a worked 议论文 plan with a model paragraph, the comprehension answer methods our JC1 Chinese programme drills, and a 10-week plan for the first half of JC1. For the secondary foundation, see our O-Level / SEC Chinese strategies guide.
Ancourage Academy's JC 1 Chinese classes run in small groups of 3 to 6; book a trial class (usually $18) to start with a diagnostic of where your child stands.
What Does the H1 Chinese (8655) Exam Actually Test?
The 2027 SEAB syllabus states that 「本科考试包括下列两个试卷」 (the examination consists of two papers), with four components worth 200 marks in total, and no literature paper.
The figures below are transcribed from the SEAB H1 Chinese Language 8655 syllabus for 2027, listed on the SEAB page of A-Level syllabuses examined for school candidates in 2027.
| Component | What the syllabus says | Time | Marks / weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1, Part 1: 写作 (writing) | Choose one of four prompts (one prompt has 3 to 4 pictures); 500 characters or more; genres 记叙文, 说明文 and 议论文 | 1 h 30 min | 60 / 30% |
| Paper 1, Part 2: 语文应用与阅读理解 (language use and comprehension) | 综合填空 (10 MCQ, 20 marks), 阅读理解一 (6 questions, 20 marks), 阅读理解二 (9 questions, 40 marks, including a summary of 70 characters or fewer) | 1 h 30 min | 80 / 40% |
| Paper 2: 口试 (oral) | Oral presentation of no more than 2 minutes after watching a 55 to 60 second video, then a discussion with the examiner | 10 to 15 min | 50 / 25% |
| Paper 2: 听力理解 (listening) | 10 multiple-choice questions on a short passage, a short dialogue and three comprehension texts | About 30 min | 10 / 5% |
Two details matter for technique. For the essay, 「考生在写作时,可以使用考评局规定的词典」: candidates may use the dictionary SEAB prescribes, so practise with it. The oral draws on the three themes of the H1 course, 文化, 关系 and 变化 (culture, relationships and change), which are also a useful lens for essay content. The oral and listening papers are covered in our O-Level / SEC Chinese oral and listening guide; the method carries over to JC with longer, more opinion-led discussion.
How Does H1 Chinese Fit Into the A-Level Curriculum?
Ministry of Education (MOE) treats Mother Tongue as a fixed part of the A-Level curriculum: H1 Mother Tongue Language sits in the norm subject combination alongside three H2 subjects, one H1 subject, General Paper and Project Work, and it cannot be swapped for another subject.
MOE's Important Notes on Subjects Offered for Pre-U Course states: "A student does not need to take the H1 MTL examination if the student has obtained a D7 or better in Higher MTL at the GCE O-Level, as the student would be deemed to have fulfilled the H1 MTL requirement. As MTL is an integral part of the GCE A-Level curriculum, H1 MTL cannot be replaced with another subject and students should continue to be engaged in the learning of MTL." The same note adds that students "may also fulfil the H1 MTL requirement by offering H2 Mother Tongue Language and Literature".
- Higher Chinese at Sec 4 changes the picture. A student with D7 or better in Higher Chinese is deemed to have met the H1 MTL requirement. That note was written for the O-Level; with the SEC replacing it from 2027, confirm the SEC-era wording with the college. Our Higher Chinese vs Standard Chinese guide covers that earlier choice.
- From 2028 the entry route is tied to SEC subjects. MOE's A-Level curriculum page states: "From 2028, students who are posted to JC or MI will offer either H1 Mother Tongue Language (MTL) or MTL 'B' depending on the subjects taken at the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examinations."
- Exemption and MTL-in-lieu are separate routes. Our Mother Tongue exemption and MTL-in-lieu guide explains who qualifies.
- H1 is not H2. H2 Chinese Language and Literature (9575) adds a literature paper worth 100 of its 200 marks, per its 2027 SEAB syllabus. H1 Chinese has no literature component at all.
Timing is the other distinctive feature. The 8655 syllabus states that 「初级学院一年级学生或高级中学二年级学生可在年底参加考试;初级学院二年级或高级中学三年级学生可在年中或年底参加考试」: JC1 students may sit the paper at the end of the year, and JC2 students at mid-year or year-end. The college decides which sitting a student enters, so ask early. How colleges count H1 Mother Tongue for promotion varies, and is covered in our JC1 to JC2 promotion criteria guide.
How Is the H1 Chinese Essay Marked?
Appendix A of the syllabus marks the essay on two scales of 30 marks each, 内容 (content) and 语文表达/结构 (language and structure), so a well-argued essay in plain language and a fluent essay with thin ideas both stall in the middle bands.
The top band for content asks for 「材料非常充实」, 「内容切合题意」 and 「见解新颖」: very full material, content that fits the question, and fresh insight. The top band for language and structure asks for 「结构严谨、条理分明、段落清楚」, a tight structure with clear reasoning and paragraphs. The lowest content band is described as 「内容不切合题意,甚至离题」, content that does not fit the question or is off-topic. That wording explains why 审题 comes first in every plan: an off-topic essay is capped by the content scale no matter how polished the Chinese is.
How Should You Plan an H1 Chinese 议论文?
Plan in five steps before writing a sentence: 题型分析, 审题, 立意, 结构 and 论据. Ten minutes of planning in a 90-minute section is time bought back in the writing.
- 题型分析 (identify the prompt type). Is it a single statement to agree or disagree with, a comparison of two values, or an open topic? A comparison prompt needs both sides weighed, not one side praised.
- 审题 (read the prompt closely). Circle the key words and the limiting words. Words such as 更, 最, 应该 and 只有 set the scope of the argument; missing them is a frequent route to 离题.
- 立意 (set the central argument). Write the 中心论点 as one sentence that answers the prompt directly. A qualified position ("yes, when...") is usually easier to defend than an absolute one.
- 结构 (build the structure). 引论, two or three 分论点 each with its own paragraph, a 让步 paragraph that concedes the other side and answers it, and a 结论 that returns to the prompt.
- 论据 (choose the evidence). Each 分论点 needs one concrete example drawn from school life, Singapore society or current affairs, and a sentence of analysis that links it back to the point. An example with no analysis earns little under 「说理很清楚,有说服力」.
The same structure underpins the Sec 4 composition, covered in our O-Level / SEC Chinese composition guide. What changes at H1 is the expectation of a real argument rather than a narrative with a moral attached. General Paper asks for the same discipline in English, as our General Paper guide explains, and students who plan both subjects the same way save effort.
Worked Example: Planning an Argumentative Essay Step by Step
This prompt is an original illustration written by Ancourage Academy, not a past SEAB question; the value is in the planning moves, which transfer to any 议论文 prompt.
Prompt (illustrative): 「在快节奏的新加坡,“慢下来”比“赶得快”更重要。你同意这个看法吗?」
- 题型: 比较型议论文. The word 更 makes it a comparison, so the essay must say why slowing down matters more, not only that it matters.
- 审题 key words: 快节奏 (the setting), 慢下来 and 赶得快 (the two values), 更重要 (the comparison).
- 立意 (中心论点): 在关键的时候慢下来,才能走得更稳、更远;慢下来不是停下来。
- 分论点一: 慢下来,才能把问题想清楚。(Thinking and learning.)
- 分论点二: 慢下来,才能看见身边的人。(Relationships, which also links to the H1 theme 关系.)
- 让步段: 承认效率是新加坡的优势,但指出只求快而不求好,最终反而更慢。
- 结论: 回扣题目:快和慢不是对立的,懂得何时慢下来,才是真正的“快”。
Model paragraph for 分论点一, in 简体字:
- Sentence 1, the 分论点: states the paragraph's claim in the prompt's own words (慢下来), so the marker sees the link to the question at once.
- Sentences 2 to 3, the 论据: an everyday example any examiner recognises, with no invented statistic.
- Sentence 4, the 分析: widens the example from exams to 做人做事, which is what lifts content from 「还算充实」 towards 「非常充实」.
- Sentence 5, the 小结: 由此可见 closes the paragraph and uses the comparison word 更重要 again, so the paragraph answers the comparison the prompt set, not just half of it.
What Question Types Appear in H1 Chinese Comprehension?
Paper 1 Part 2 has three sections carrying 80 marks, and half of those marks sit in 阅读理解二, the written-answer section that ends with a summary of no more than 70 characters.
| Section (per SEAB 8655) | Format and marks | Technique Ancourage Academy drills |
|---|---|---|
| 综合填空 | One short text, 10 MCQ, 20 marks | Read the whole text first; decide each blank from the sentence before and after, including connectives such as 然而 and 因此 |
| 阅读理解一 | 1 to 2 real-life texts such as adverts, flyers or news reports; 6 questions, MCQ and written answers, 20 marks | Scan for the detail the question names (date, condition, audience); answer only what is asked |
| 阅读理解二 | One passage, 9 written-answer questions, 40 marks | Locate, then rephrase: 用自己的话回答 means paraphrase, not a copied sentence |
| 长文缩短 (within 阅读理解二) | Summarise set paragraphs in 70 characters or fewer | List the key points first, cut examples and description, then join with connectives and count characters |
Ancourage Academy practises the 阅读理解二 questions in four forms: explaining a word or phrase in context, retrieving and rephrasing content, inferring an attitude or reason the text implies, and stating the writer's main idea. The syllabus's objective that students 「能读懂内容与生活和时事相关的阅读材料,并推断其中的隐含信息」 (read texts on daily life and current affairs and infer implied information) is why the inference form carries weight. A sound 答题格式 opens by echoing the question's wording, gives the answer in a full sentence, and adds the reason or evidence where the question says 为什么.
Worked Example: Answering Two Comprehension Questions
The passage and questions below are original illustrations; they show two moves that often cost marks when done badly: rephrasing in one's own words and stating an inferred main idea.
Passage (illustrative): 「每天傍晚,陈婆婆都会坐在组屋楼下的石椅上,看孩子们放学回家。有人觉得她无所事事,她却笑着说:“我在等他们平安回来。”几年前,楼下的一个孩子放学后迟迟未归,是她第一个发现并通知了家长。从那以后,家长们放心了许多,孩子们也习惯了跟她打招呼。原来,一个社区的温暖,常常藏在这些不起眼的守候里。」
Question 1 (用自己的话回答): 为什么家长们“放心了许多”? Model answer: 「家长们放心了许多,是因为陈婆婆每天都在楼下留意孩子们回家,还曾经最早察觉一个孩子没有准时到家,并马上告诉了他的家长,所以家长们知道有人在帮忙照看孩子。」 The answer echoes the question (家长们放心了许多,是因为), rephrases 第一个发现并通知了家长 as 最早察觉…马上告诉, and finishes with the consequence the question asks about.
Question 2 (主旨/推断): 作者认为社区的温暖从哪里来? Model answer: 「作者认为,社区的温暖来自邻居之间平凡而默默的关心,例如陈婆婆每天在楼下守候孩子回家这样不起眼的小事。」 The answer states the idea in general terms first, then anchors it in the passage with one example. Quoting only the final sentence would repeat the text without showing understanding.
What Should a 10-Week JC1 Plan for H1 Chinese Look Like?
Spend the first ten weeks of JC1 building the habits the timed sections reward, one component at a time, and finish with full timed sections of 1 hour 30 minutes each.
| Weeks | Focus | Output by the end |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Diagnostic essay and comprehension; read the 8655 format and marking descriptors | A list of the student's three most frequent errors |
| 3 to 4 | 题型分析, 审题 and 立意 on ten prompts, plans only | Ten one-line 中心论点, checked against each prompt |
| 5 to 6 | 结构 and 论据: a personal bank of examples under 文化, 关系 and 变化 | Two full essays, one of them timed |
| 7 | 综合填空 and 阅读理解一: connectives, vocabulary in context, real-life texts | A vocabulary notebook sorted by function |
| 8 | 阅读理解二: rephrasing and inference; 长文缩短 within 70 characters | Three summaries, each counted and under the limit |
| 9 | Oral presentation to a 2-minute limit; listening practice | Two recorded presentations with feedback |
| 10 | One timed essay section and one timed comprehension section, 1 h 30 each | A marked script and a revised error list |
If the college enters students for the JC1 year-end sitting, this plan is the start of exam preparation; if not, it builds the base for JC2. Either way, H1 Chinese shares a timetable with H2 subjects that are new, so the adjustment described in our secondary to JC transition guide applies here too. The JC2 Chinese programme picks up from the same error list.
What Are the Most Common H1 Chinese Mistakes?
Six errors account for most lost H1 Chinese marks — writing before planning, answering half a comparison prompt, examples without analysis, copying instead of rephrasing, over-length 长文缩短 summaries and essays under 500 characters — and each has a mechanical fix.
- Writing before planning. The fix is a written 中心论点 and paragraph list before the first sentence.
- Answering half a comparison prompt. If the prompt says 更, the essay must compare, usually in the 让步 paragraph.
- Examples without analysis. Every 论据 needs a sentence explaining how it proves the 分论点.
- Copying instead of rephrasing. When a question says 用自己的话, a lifted sentence rarely earns full marks.
- Over-length summaries. The 长文缩短 limit is 70 characters; count every time in practice.
- Falling short of 500 characters. The essay minimum is 500; plan enough 分论点 to reach it without padding.
Common Questions About H1 Chinese (8655)
How should you plan an H1 Chinese 议论文 in the exam?
In five steps, in about ten minutes of a 90-minute section: identify the prompt type (题型分析), read the key and limiting words (审题), write the central argument as one sentence (立意), lay out an introduction, two or three 分论点, a concession paragraph and a conclusion (结构), then attach one concrete example with a sentence of analysis to each point (论据).
How many characters must an H1 Chinese essay be?
The SEAB 8655 syllabus sets the essay at 500 characters or more (「字数在 500 以上」). Candidates choose one of four prompts, one of which includes 3 to 4 pictures, and the genres tested are narrative (记叙文), expository (说明文) and argumentative (议论文) writing, within a 1 hour 30 minute section worth 60 marks.
How long can the H1 Chinese summary answer be?
The summary in 阅读理解二 condenses set paragraphs of the passage into a short text of no more than 70 characters, per the SEAB syllabus. It sits inside the 40-mark 阅读理解二 section. List the key points first, drop examples and description, then join the points with connectives and count before writing the final version.
When do students sit the H1 Chinese A-Level paper?
The 8655 syllabus allows JC1 students to sit at the end of the year, and JC2 students at mid-year or the end of the year. The college decides which sitting its students enter, so ask at the start of JC1.
Which H1 Chinese mistakes cost the most marks?
Six recur: starting to write before a plan exists, answering only half of a comparison prompt that uses 更, giving examples with no analysis, copying passage sentences when a question says 用自己的话, running past the 70-character 长文缩短 limit, and finishing under the 500-character essay minimum. Each is fixed mechanically: a written 中心论点 and paragraph list, a 让步 paragraph, one analysis sentence per example, rephrasing, counting and planning enough 分论点.
How should a JC1 student start preparing for H1 Chinese?
Start with a diagnostic essay and comprehension to find the most frequent errors, then build planning habits (审题, 立意, 结构, 论据) before writing full essays. Ancourage Academy's JC1 Chinese classes follow this sequence, and a trial class (usually $18) begins with that diagnostic.
