For a full art or design bachelor's degree at one of Singapore's autonomous universities, the main options are NTU's School of Art, Design & Media (ADM), NUS design degrees, SUTD, and SIT's design and media degrees. Each pairs creativity with a different emphasis — studio practice, industrial design, technology or game development. Art by Ancourage prepares students for the portfolios most of these degrees require.
This guide compares the programmes, entry requirements and portfolio expectations of each university. It sits alongside our wider overview of studying art after secondary school and the dedicated NAFA & LASALLE (UAS) admission guide. To build a degree-ready folder, our Professional Fine Art Classes at Bishan and Woodlands focus on the observational drawing universities still prize.
When we coach students toward university portfolios at Bishan and Woodlands, the recurring lesson is that panels look beyond polished final pieces for evidence of thinking — process work, studies and observational drawing tend to carry more weight than a few showpiece illustrations.
Which Universities Offer Art & Design Degrees?
The four autonomous universities approach art and design very differently — from NTU ADM's studio-based fine art and media, to SUTD's technology-driven design science. This table summarises where each fits.
| University | Focus | Portfolio? |
|---|---|---|
| NTU — Art, Design & Media (ADM) | Studio art, design and media (animation, film, communication design, interaction) | Required |
| NUS — College of Design & Engineering | Industrial Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture | Aptitude test / interview |
| SUTD | Architecture & Sustainable Design; Design & Artificial Intelligence | Optional |
| SIT (with DigiPen) | UX & game design, digital media, interactive media | Varies by programme |
What Does NTU ADM Offer?
NTU ADM is Singapore's leading university for studio-based art, design and media, and from the 2026 admission year it offers a single four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art, Design and Media with four specialisations. The specialisations are Animation and Game Art; Cinematic Arts; Communication Design and Photographic Practice; and Transversal Design: Object and Interaction.
A portfolio is required — typically a single PDF of 15–20 pages of 2D, 3D or time-based work — alongside ADM's set assignments, which include a short introduction video, a creative project, and an observational drawing. ADM explicitly asks for work that is not AI-assisted. Note that ADM teaches art history as coursework but does not offer a standalone art-history degree. See the ADM admission requirements for the current brief.
What Art Degrees Does NUS Offer?
NUS does not offer a studio fine-art degree, but its College of Design & Engineering runs strong design degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Design, a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, and Landscape Architecture. These are design-and-build oriented rather than pure visual art.
Industrial Design selection includes an interview with additional assessment, and applicants are advised to bring creative material. Architecture requires an Admission Aptitude Test (AAT) and interview for shortlisted candidates. If your interest is spatial, product or built-environment design rather than studio art, NUS is a natural fit — see the NUS CDE programmes page.
SUTD: Design Meets Technology
SUTD is a design-centric university where degrees are Bachelor of Science qualifications that fuse design with engineering and technology. The two most design-focused pillars are Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD) and Design and Artificial Intelligence (DAI), the latter relaunching with a revamped curriculum from September 2026.
SUTD uses holistic admissions and a portfolio is optional — welcome as a supplement but not compulsory — with interviews for selected candidates. It suits students who want to combine creativity with maths, technology and problem-solving rather than traditional studio art. See the SUTD undergraduate majors page.
SIT & DigiPen: Game, Media & Animation
SIT offers design and media degrees, several awarded by DigiPen Institute of Technology Singapore, covering user-experience and game design, digital media and interactive media development. These are the most games-and-animation-focused degrees in Singapore.
Options include a BA in User Experience and Game Design and a degree in Communication and Digital Media, plus joint computer-science degrees in interactive media and real-time simulation. Important: the DigiPen BFA in Digital Art and Animation took its final cohort in AY2025/26 and is no longer accepting new students after 2026, so applicants seeking pure digital art should look to NTU ADM or overseas instead. See the SIT design and media degrees page.
UAS, Overseas-Linked & Private Degrees
Beyond the autonomous universities, NAFA and LASALLE award BA (Hons) degrees through the University of the Arts Singapore (UAS), and private routes such as the RMIT graphic-design degree at SIM offer further options. These widen the field considerably for studio art, fashion, animation and communication design.
UAS-conferred degrees cover fine art, design, media and performing arts (note some NAFA degrees are still validated by overseas partners such as UAL and RCM during the transition). For full entry requirements and portfolio details, read our NAFA & LASALLE admission guide. If you would rather study abroad, see studying art overseas.
What Are the Entry Requirements and Portfolios?
Most art and design degrees expect strong A-Level, IB or polytechnic-diploma results plus, for studio and design programmes, a portfolio or aptitude test — drawing from direct observation is valued almost everywhere. Polytechnic diploma holders can often enter with advanced standing.
- Portfolio-led: NTU ADM and the UAS colleges require a curated portfolio of original work.
- Test or interview: NUS Architecture (AAT) and Industrial Design (interview) assess aptitude directly.
- Optional portfolio: SUTD welcomes but does not require one.

How Does Art by Ancourage Prepare You?
Art by Ancourage builds the observational, technical and conceptual foundation that university portfolios are assessed on, in small groups or one-to-one. We help students assemble and refine a folder that meets a specific programme's brief.
Students work through our Professional Fine Art Classes for breadth, or take private lessons for targeted portfolio coaching. To see where these degrees lead, read our overview of art career pathways. Book a trial class (from $18) at Bishan or Woodlands to start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about art and design degrees at Singapore's universities.
Which university is best for art and design in Singapore?
It depends on the field. NTU's School of Art, Design & Media (ADM) is the top choice for studio art, animation, film and communication design; NUS leads in industrial design and architecture; SUTD suits design combined with technology and AI; and SIT (with DigiPen) is strongest for game and interactive-media design. NAFA and LASALLE, under the University of the Arts Singapore, are the dedicated arts-university option.
Do Singapore universities require an art portfolio?
Most studio and design programmes do. NTU ADM requires a portfolio plus set assignments; NUS Architecture and Industrial Design use an aptitude test or interview; and the UAS colleges (NAFA, LASALLE) require a portfolio and interview. SUTD treats the portfolio as optional. Across the board, observational drawing and evidence of your creative process strengthen an application.
Can polytechnic diploma holders enter a university art degree?
Yes. Polytechnic diploma holders are eligible for the autonomous universities and often receive advanced-standing credit, especially when the diploma aligns with the degree. A strong diploma GPA and a good portfolio matter most. Some students also pursue a degree top-up locally (for example at SIM) or overseas after their diploma.
Does NUS offer a fine art or art history degree?
No. NUS does not offer a studio fine-art (BFA) degree or a standalone art-history major. Its design degrees under the College of Design & Engineering are Industrial Design, Architecture and Landscape Architecture. For a studio fine-art degree in Singapore, look to NTU ADM or the NAFA and LASALLE BA (Hons) programmes under the University of the Arts Singapore.
Is the DigiPen digital art and animation degree still available?
No — the DigiPen BFA in Digital Art and Animation at SIT took its final cohort in AY2025/26 and is not accepting new students after 2026. Applicants seeking a pure digital art and animation degree should consider NTU ADM's Animation and Game Art specialisation, the UAS colleges, or an overseas art school instead.
