JC Admission Calculator (L1R5 / L1R4)
Work out your L1R5 (current JC admission, qualify at 20 or lower) or L1R4 (from the 2028 JAE, qualify at 16 or lower) aggregate from your O-Level / SEC grades. A lower score is better. This free tool from Ancourage Academy uses the official MOE JAE rules.
Pick your O-Level / SEC grade for each slot. A lower aggregate is better — the best possible is 6 (all A1). JC-eligible when your gross L1R5 is 20 or lower.
- A1 = 1
- A2 = 2
- B3 = 3
- B4 = 4
- C5 = 5
- C6 = 6
- D7 = 7
- E8 = 8
- F9 = 9

O-Level / SEC grade points
Every counted subject scores its grade number — the leading digit of the grade. A lower total aggregate is more competitive.

| B3 | 3 |
| B4 | 4 |
| C5 | 5 |

L1R5 vs L1R4: what changes in 2028
Now (2026 & 2027 JAE) — L1R5: one language + five relevant subjects (six subjects), qualify when your gross aggregate is 20 or lower, bonus cap 4 (+2 for a Language Elective Programme). From the 2028 JAE — L1R4: one language + four relevant subjects (five subjects), qualify at 16 or lower for JC and 20 for Millennia Institute, with the bonus cap reduced to 3 (+2 LEP). Because the number of subjects counted changes, L1R5 and L1R4 scores are not directly comparable.
Religious Knowledge cannot be counted at all. Applied subjects such as Design & Technology and Nutrition & Food Science cannot fill the Mathematics/Science or Humanities relevant-subject slots, though one may still count as a best-scoring "any subject" slot. A Higher Mother Tongue used as your first language cannot also be re-counted as a Mother Tongue relevant subject.
Common questions
- How do I calculate my L1R5 score?
- Your L1R5 is the sum of six O-Level / SEC grade points: your First Language (English or Higher Mother Tongue) plus five relevant subjects. Each grade scores its number — A1 = 1, A2 = 2, up to F9 = 9 — so a lower total is better, with 6 (six A1s) the best possible. The calculator above adds them; subtract any bonus points for your net L1R5.
- What is the difference between L1R5 and L1R4?
- L1R5 (one language + five relevant subjects, qualify at 20 or lower) is the current JC admission aggregate for the 2026 and 2027 Joint Admissions Exercise. From the 2028 JAE it becomes L1R4 (one language + four relevant subjects, qualify at 16 or lower for JC, 20 for Millennia Institute), and the bonus-point cap drops from 4 to 3. Use the toggle above to switch between them.
- What L1R5 score do I need to get into a JC?
- A gross L1R5 of 20 or lower makes you eligible to be considered for JC admission, but individual JC course cut-off points are competitive and usually much lower (more demanding) than 20, and they change every year. Use your score here to shortlist colleges, then check prior-year ranges on our JC cut-off points page.
- Which subjects count in the L1R5 aggregate?
- One language (your better of English or Higher Mother Tongue) plus five relevant subjects. Of the relevant subjects, three must span both groups — two Mathematics/Science plus one Humanities, or two Humanities plus one Mathematics/Science — and the other two can be any best-scoring subjects.
- How many bonus points can I get for JC admission?
- Up to 4 bonus points from a combination of CCA attainment, school affiliation and Higher Mother Tongue, plus 2 more if you are selected for a Chinese, Malay or Tamil Language Elective Programme — a maximum of 6. Bonus points are subtracted from your gross aggregate to give your net score. From the 2028 JAE the general cap falls to 3 (max 5 with LEP).
