L1R5 vs L1R4: JC and MI, now and from 2028

There are four schemes, not two. MOE sets the subject shape, the qualifying bar and the bonus cap separately for each institution in each regime, so a Junior College applicant and a Millennia Institute applicant sitting the same papers are not scored the same way. Because the number of subjects counted changes, L1R5 and L1R4 scores are never directly comparable.

Religious Knowledge cannot be counted at all. Applied subjects such as Design & Technology and Nutrition & Food Science cannot fill the Mathematics/Science or Humanities relevant-subject slots, though one may still count as a best-scoring "any subject" slot. A Higher Mother Tongue used as your first language cannot also be re-counted as a Mother Tongue relevant subject.

How do I calculate my L1R5 score?

Your L1R5 is the sum of six O-Level / SEC grade points: your First Language (English or Higher Mother Tongue) plus five relevant subjects. Each grade scores its leading digit — A1 = 1, A2 = 2, up to F9 = 9 — so a lower total is better, with 6 (six A1s) the best possible. The calculator above adds them; subtract any bonus points for your net L1R5.

What is the difference between L1R5 and L1R4?

L1R5 (one language + five relevant subjects, qualify at 20 or lower) is the current JC admission aggregate for the 2026 and 2027 Joint Admissions Exercise. From the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE) — the successor to the JAE — it becomes L1R4 (one language + four relevant subjects, qualify at 16 or lower for JC, 20 for Millennia Institute), the bonus-point cap drops from 4 to 3, and every subject used must be taken at G3. Millennia Institute already admits on L1R4 today, at 20 or lower — but on a different subject shape: MOE lets MI pool R1 and R2 across Humanities, Mathematics or Science, where JC reserves R1 for Humanities. From 2028 that difference disappears — MOE publishes one L1R4 subject table for JC and MI — and what remains is the bar (16 for JC, 20 for MI) and the bonus cap (5 for JC, 3 for MI). What L1R5 score do I need to get into a JC?

A gross L1R5 of 20 or lower is one of MOE's two JC eligibility criteria — you must also meet its minimum grades for English Language (A1–C6), any one Mathematics (A1–D7) and a Mother Tongue Language (A1–D7, or A1–E8 for Higher Mother Tongue). Beyond that, individual JC course cut-off points are competitive and usually much lower (more demanding) than 20, and they change every year. Which subjects count in the L1R5 aggregate?

One language (your better of English or Higher Mother Tongue) plus five relevant subjects. Of the relevant subjects, three must span both groups — two Mathematics/Science plus one Humanities, or two Humanities plus one Mathematics/Science — and the other two can be any best-scoring subjects. Religious Knowledge cannot be counted at all. Applied subjects such as Design & Technology and Nutrition & Food Science cannot fill the Mathematics/Science or Humanities relevant-subject slots, though one may still count as a best-scoring "any subject" slot. How many bonus points can I get for JC admission?

Up to 4 bonus points from a combination of CCA attainment, school affiliation, English and Higher Mother Tongue both at A1–C6, and Chinese or Malay (Special Programmes) or Bahasa Indonesia at A1–C6, plus 2 more if you are selected for a Chinese, Malay or Tamil Language Elective Programme — a maximum of 6. From the 2028 PSE the general cap falls to 3 (max 5 with LEP). Bonus points are subtracted from your gross aggregate to give your net score, but they never decide whether you qualify: MOE checks JC and MI eligibility on the gross aggregate, so the bonus sets your competitive posting score, not your eligibility.

How many bonus points can a Millennia Institute applicant get?

Four in the 2026 and 2027 JAE, and three from the 2028 PSE — never the JC maximum of 6 or 5. Millennia Institute applicants can earn CCA attainment (Excellent 2, Good 1), English and Higher Mother Tongue both at A1–C6 (2), and Chinese or Malay (Special Programmes) or Bahasa Indonesia at A1–C6 (2), capped at 4 today and 3 from 2028. The two remaining JC awards are out of reach: MOE's affiliation row is titled "Affiliated JC" and applies only to graduates of affiliated secondary schools choosing that JC, and the extra 2 points for a Chinese, Malay or Tamil Language Elective Programme are awarded at a JC. Because eligibility is judged on the gross aggregate, this does not change whether you qualify for MI at 20 or lower — it changes your net posting score.
