Secondary 1 (Sec 1) Science tuition at Ancourage Academy in Singapore (Bishan & Woodlands) offers small-group classes of 3-6 students, following Singapore's MOE syllabus. Weekly 2-hour lessons use our ESB methodology to build scientific inquiry, structured answering, and experimental skills. "At advanced levels, science demands both precision and creativity—hypothesis meets rigour," according to our educators. Our structured approach helps students develop the inquiry mindset for secondary science.
What Makes Us Different
Our proven teaching methodology combines evidence-based approaches for maximum learning effectiveness
Ebbinghaus Memory Theory
Spaced retrieval practice across Physics, Chemistry, and Biology topics — weekly concept checks, monthly cross-topic quizzes, and term revision papers — timed to reinforce scientific vocabulary and process skills before they weaken.
Socratic Questioning
Questions that link experimental evidence to theory — 'What does your data suggest about this hypothesis?' and 'How would you redesign this experiment to improve reliability?' — training students to think like scientists, not just recall facts.
Bruner's Scaffolding
From fully guided practical reports to template-supported analysis to independent evaluation — tutors reduce scaffolding step by step, ensuring students can plan experiments, interpret data, and draw conclusions on their own.

What Sec 1 students commonly work on
- 1
Scientific method — understanding the steps of inquiry and fair testing
- 2
Structured answers — writing explanations with keywords and logical flow
- 3
Connecting concepts — linking different topics together
- 4
Lab skills — conducting experiments accurately and safely
- 5
Abstract concepts — understanding things that cannot be directly observed

PSLE Science with life cycles, systems, and basic inquiry skills
Prepares For
Sec 2 Science and later specialisation into Biology, Chemistry, or Physics
Key Transition
Scientific discipline replaces factual memorisation in lower secondary Sec 1 — students cultivate inquiry-driven thinking, persistently asking "why" and "how" to understand phenomena deeply.
“Lower secondary Science gives students their first taste of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as distinct disciplines. Building strong laboratory skills, scientific vocabulary, and structured answer techniques here makes the transition to upper secondary specialisation much smoother.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Sec 1 Science introduces the scientific method formally, requires structured keyword-based answers, and integrates concepts from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Students must explain processes rather than just identify facts. Read our secondary Science tuition guide.
Yes. Sec 1 and Sec 2 Science expose students to all three disciplines, helping them discover their strengths and interests. Strong performance also positions students for Pure Science pathways in upper secondary.
Three key skills matter most: structured answering with scientific keywords, experimental design and data interpretation, and connecting concepts across different science topics. We develop all three systematically.
Our Sec 1 Science classes run weekly for 2 hours at both our Bishan and Woodlands centres. Each class has 3-6 students, giving your child focused attention as they build secondary-level foundations. See our pricing page for fees, or try a trial class — free (usually $18).
With only 3-6 students per class, our tutors identify each student's specific challenges quickly. Our ESB methodology uses Ebbinghaus spaced review for long-term retention, Socratic questioning for deeper understanding, and Bruner's scaffolding for systematic skill building — targeting root causes rather than surface symptoms. In Sec 1, we build experimental skills and conceptual understanding across all three science disciplines. Learn more in our secondary Science tuition guide.
Our Bishan centre is 10 minutes on foot from Bishan MRT (NS17/CC15, North-South and Circle Lines). Our Woodlands centre at Vista Point is 5 minutes from Woodlands South MRT (TE3, Thomson-East Coast Line). Sec 1 students from Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary, Catholic High Secondary, Raffles Institution and Woodgrove Secondary, Christ Church Secondary, Woodlands Secondary attend regularly.
Our small-group classes are intentionally kept between 3 and 6 students so every learner receives close guidance, timely feedback, and ample practice.
Each lesson is 2 hours, providing ample time for thorough coverage of topics and interactive learning.
Yes. All lesson materials and worksheets are provided and included in the fees. Students should bring regular stationery and, where applicable, school textbooks/workbooks for reference.
Yes. Our materials and pacing align with the MOE syllabus. External syllabuses (e.g. IGCSE, IB) are available upon request.
