Secondary 1 (Sec 1) Maths tuition at Ancourage Academy in Singapore (Bishan & Woodlands) offers small-group classes of 3-6 students, following Singapore's MOE syllabus. Weekly 2-hour lessons use our ESB methodology to build algebra, integers, and abstract reasoning skills. "Problem-solving is a skill that develops with practice and the right guidance," explains our teaching faculty. Our structured approach helps students master the transition from primary to secondary mathematics.
What Makes Us Different
Our proven teaching methodology combines evidence-based approaches for maximum learning effectiveness
Ebbinghaus Memory Theory
Planned retrieval of problem-solving heuristics and formulae at expanding intervals — weekly topical practices, monthly mixed-topic papers, and term revision cycles — keeping methods accessible so exam performance matches classroom understanding.
Socratic Questioning
Questions that probe mathematical reasoning — 'Why did you choose this heuristic?' and 'What changes if the ratio doubles?' — exposing gaps between procedural fluency and conceptual understanding before they compound.
Bruner's Scaffolding
From fully worked examples to guided practice with prompts to independent problem-solving — tutors systematically fade hints so students develop their own approach to unfamiliar question types.

Sec 2 Mathematics with more complex algebra, geometry proofs, and trigonometry foundations
Key Transition
Algebra emerges as the cornerstone of lower secondary Sec 1 mathematics — mastering symbolic manipulation unlocks every advanced mathematical concept in upper secondary.
“Teacher Min is incredibly helpful, always patient, and explains concepts in a way that's easy to understand. Her positive attitude makes learning maths enjoyable. The environment is also great — it's conducive to studying and makes me feel comfortable.”
Secondary Student (Mathematics)
“Secondary 1 and 2 Mathematics introduces algebra, geometry proofs, and data analysis — a significant conceptual leap from primary arithmetic. Students who build strong algebraic fluency here find upper secondary topics far more manageable, while those who fall behind face compounding difficulties.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Sec 1 introduces algebra—a fundamental shift from concrete arithmetic to abstract variables. Students must learn to manipulate expressions with letters, work with negative numbers, and show working in new ways. This conceptual leap requires guidance and practice. Read our secondary Maths tuition guide.
Very important. Performance in Sec 1 and Sec 2 influences upper-secondary subject choices (including G-levels) and whether students qualify for Additional Mathematics. Strong foundations now open doors to more advanced mathematics pathways. See our full guide to G1, G2, and G3 levels.
Algebra and integers typically challenge students most. Understanding negative numbers, algebraic manipulation, and translating word problems into equations require a different mindset from primary school problem sums.
Our Sec 1 Mathematics classes run weekly for 2 hours at both our Bishan and Woodlands centres. Each class has 3-6 students, giving your child focused attention as they build secondary-level foundations. See our pricing page for fees, or try a trial class — free (usually $18).
With only 3-6 students per class, our tutors identify each student's specific challenges quickly. In Sec 1, we focus on bridging the primary-to-secondary transition and building strong maths study habits. Our ESB methodology uses Ebbinghaus spaced review for long-term retention, Socratic questioning for deeper understanding, and Bruner's scaffolding for systematic skill building — targeting root causes rather than surface symptoms. Learn more in our secondary Maths tuition guide.
Our Bishan centre serves families from Bishan, Toa Payoh, Ang Mo Kio, Marymount, and Thomson — all within a few MRT stops on the North-South or Circle Line. Sec 1 students from Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary, Catholic High Secondary, Raffles Institution attend our Mathematics classes. For families in the North, our Woodlands centre at Vista Point serves Woodlands, Admiralty, Marsiling, and Sembawang.
Our small-group classes are intentionally kept between 3 and 6 students so every learner receives close guidance, timely feedback, and ample practice.
Each lesson is 2 hours, providing ample time for thorough coverage of topics and interactive learning.
Yes. All lesson materials and worksheets are provided and included in the fees. Students should bring regular stationery and, where applicable, school textbooks/workbooks for reference.
Yes. Our materials and pacing align with the MOE syllabus. External syllabuses (e.g. IGCSE, IB) are available upon request.
