K1 Art Programme

Art by Ancourage · Kindergarten 1

Content reviewed: Mar 2026

K1 Art classes at Art by Ancourage in Singapore (Bishan & Woodlands) offer small groups of 3-6 students focused on creativity, imagination, and motor development through play-based exploration. The OECD PISA 2022 study found that 57% of Singapore students enjoy creating art, compared to 49% across OECD countries—early engagement nurtures this natural inclination (OECD, 2022). Weekly sessions nurture self-expression through crayons, paint, collage, and clay. Our curriculum aligns with the MOE Nurturing Early Learners (NEL) framework, supporting learning dispositions such as curiosity, creativity, and perseverance through art-making activities. Play-based learning is central to every session—children explore materials freely before guided activities channel their discoveries into purposeful creation. Motor development milestones are woven naturally into each project: tearing paper builds hand strength, threading develops bilateral coordination, and controlled brushwork prepares children for pencil grip and writing readiness. "Every child is an artist—at K1, we celebrate process over perfection while building confidence and fine motor skills," note our LASALLE-trained instructors.

K1 Art classes are designed to nurture creativity, imagination, and motor development rather than focusing heavily on technique. At this age, the emphasis is on exploration and play through art.

Parents can expect their child to develop creativity, fine motor skills, and confidence in self-expression through artistic exploration.

Every student has a unique creative voice. Our role is to develop strong technical foundations — drawing, painting, composition — so that voice can come through with confidence. In small groups of 3–6, we see each student clearly and guide their growth personally.

Our Teaching Approach

Three proven pedagogical methods adapted for visual arts education

🧠

Ebbinghaus

Scheduled review sessions at increasing intervals — today, tomorrow, next week, next month — so concepts are revisited just before they fade, building durable long-term memory through strategic timing rather than cramming.

💭

Socratic

Purposeful questioning that guides children to discover answers themselves — 'How did you figure that out?' and 'What would happen if we tried it another way?' — developing thinking skills rather than just memorising answers.

📈

Bruner

Step-by-step support that is gradually removed as confidence grows — tutors first demonstrate, then guide with prompts, then step back as children work independently — ensuring mastery at each stage before moving forward.

K1 Art Enrichment Classes in Singapore

The Kindergarten 1 School Art Programme at Art by Ancourage is designed for children aged 4 who are beginning their first year of formal education. At this stage, art enrichment focuses on building fine motor skills, colour recognition, and creative confidence through age-appropriate activities — finger painting, simple drawing exercises, paper cutting, pasting, and basic shape construction. Each weekly session follows a structured yet playful format that complements the MOE Nurturing Early Learners (NEL) arts framework, helping children develop hand-eye coordination, pencil grip strength, and early compositional awareness. Classes are conducted in small groups of 3–6 children at Art by Ancourage's Bishan and Woodlands studios, ensuring each child receives individual attention and encouragement. Unlike generic craft sessions, the K1 programme builds progressively — children develop real drawing and painting foundations that prepare them for K2 and primary school art. Parents are welcome to stay for the first few sessions until children feel comfortable. All materials are provided and $18 trial classes are available.

K1 Art focuses on creative exploration and motor development through play-based learning activities like painting, collage, and craft. Aligned with the NEL framework, sessions use sensory-rich materials to develop fine motor skills, colour recognition, and creative confidence. Children enjoy the process of making art while building readiness for more structured learning ahead.

Yes! Our K1 Art programme complements the kindergarten curriculum and supports NEL framework goals by reinforcing motor skills, colour and shape recognition, and following multi-step instructions through play-based learning. Activities are age-appropriate and help children build the focus, coordination, and creative confidence that support overall kindergarten readiness.

Art at K1 level builds fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, focus, and patience through play-based activities like finger painting, tearing and pasting, and moulding clay. Children develop creative confidence, learn to express ideas visually, and enjoy sensory exploration—all foundational developmental skills that support learning across subjects in kindergarten and beyond. Read our school art programme guide.

Our instructors provide brief verbal feedback after each session and a more detailed term-end progress summary covering motor development milestones, creative confidence, social engagement, and attention span. We also photograph artwork throughout the term so parents can see their child's growth from early mark-making to more intentional creations.

K1 Art classes have a maximum of 6 students, ensuring every child receives personalised attention from our instructor. This small group setting allows us to adapt activities to each child's developmental stage while still providing the social interaction that helps young learners build sharing skills, patience, and collaborative creativity.

Our School Programme is designed to complement and extend the MOE visual arts curriculum at our Bishan and Woodlands studios. We cover observation drawing, colour theory, composition, and creative expression — techniques aligned with school requirements — while developing artistic confidence in small groups of 3-6.

We focus specifically on skills assessed in school art: observation drawing accuracy, colour mixing and theory, compositional balance, and creative expression. Students practise these skills weekly with expert feedback, and many see measurable improvement in their school art assessment results over one to two terms.

Yes! Students in our School Programme who show strong artistic potential can transition to our dedicated DSA Portfolio track for secondary school admission preparation. The school programme builds the foundational drawing, painting, and composition skills that form the basis of a competitive DSA art portfolio.
