IB DP 1 Chinese B (Mandarin) tuition at Ancourage Academy in Singapore (Bishan & Woodlands) offers focused classes capped at 6 students, aligned with the IB Diploma Programme Chinese B syllabus — Group 2, Language Acquisition — at SL and HL. Weekly 2-hour lessons use our ESB methodology to build the Paper 1 writing task, Paper 2 listening and reading comprehension, and the Individual Oral across the five prescribed themes. Frequently Asked Questions
DP 1 Chinese B introduces the IB assessment model: Paper 1 (one writing task chosen from three prompts), Paper 2 (listening comprehension and reading comprehension), and the Individual Oral. The focus shifts from learning the language to using it accurately for a stated audience, context and purpose under exam conditions.
HL asks for a longer, more complex Paper 1 response, handles denser listening and reading passages, and adds the study of two literary works written in Chinese — the HL Individual Oral is based on an extract from one of them. Choose HL if your child is comfortable reading extended Chinese texts. SL covers the same five themes with a lighter reading load.
The Individual Oral is worth 25% of the grade at both SL and HL. SL students describe and discuss a visual stimulus linked to one of the five prescribed themes; HL students respond to an extract from one of the two literary works they have studied. Both run 12-15 minutes and are conducted entirely in Mandarin, with 15 minutes of supervised preparation time at SL and 20 minutes at HL, and preparation starts in DP 1 with practice recordings.
