IB DP 1 Chinese (Mandarin) tuition at Ancourage Academy in Singapore (Bishan & Woodlands) offers focused classes capped at 6 students, aligned with the IB Diploma Programme Language and Literature syllabus (SL/HL). Weekly 2-hour lessons use our ESB methodology to develop close reading, Paper 1 guided analysis, and structured literary response for IB examination preparation. "DP Year 1 establishes analytical foundations—students learn systematic approaches to literary and non-literary texts at the highest academic level," explains our teaching faculty. Our approach builds disciplined analysis and sophisticated writing.
What Makes Us Different
Our proven teaching methodology combines evidence-based approaches for maximum learning effectiveness
Ebbinghaus Memory Theory
Self-directed retrieval scheduling where students learn to identify their own weak areas and plan review cycles accordingly — developing the metacognitive skills essential for A-Level success and independent university study.
Socratic Questioning
Rigorous dialectic questioning where students must justify their reasoning and consider counterarguments — 'What evidence supports this?' and 'Where could this logic break down?' — building the analytical rigour expected in higher education.
Bruner's Scaffolding
Minimal scaffolding with maximum autonomy — tutors pose challenging problems and observe, intervening only when students are genuinely stuck — preparing students to structure their own approach to unfamiliar problems.

Frequently Asked Questions
DP 1 Chinese introduces IB-specific assessments: Paper 1 (unseen text analysis), Paper 2 (comparative essay), Individual Oral (IO), and HL Essay. The focus shifts from learning skills to applying them under exam conditions with specific rubrics and time constraints.
HL requires additional depth, a longer HL Essay (1,200-1,500 words), and more sophisticated analysis. Choose HL if your child enjoys literary analysis and writing, or if they plan bilingual Group 1 study. SL provides excellent preparation without the extended workload.
The IO is a 15-minute oral assessment where students analyse an extract from a studied work and connect it to a global issue. Preparation begins in DP 1 with practice presentations and developing connections between texts and global themes. For Chinese IO, students present their analysis entirely in Mandarin, connecting Chinese literary works to global themes. Read our IB vs MOE curriculum comparison.
Our small-group classes are intentionally kept between 3 and 6 students so every learner receives close guidance, timely feedback, and ample practice.
Each lesson is 2 hours, providing ample time for thorough coverage of topics and interactive learning.
