Sec 3 G3 Combined Science (Chem, Phy) Tuition

Content reviewed: Feb 2026
Secondary 3 (Sec 3) Combined Science (Chemistry/Physics), commonly called Combi Sci, tuition at Ancourage Academy in Singapore (Bishan & Woodlands) offers small-group classes of 3-6 students, following Singapore's MOE syllabus. Weekly 2-hour lessons use our ESB methodology to build conceptual understanding, experimental skills, and exam techniques across both disciplines. "Every experiment teaches two lessons: the science itself, and how to think like a scientist," explains our teaching faculty. Our structured approach helps students master formulas, equations, and circuit analysis for O-Level success.
What Makes Us Different
Our proven teaching methodology combines evidence-based approaches for maximum learning effectiveness
Ebbinghaus Memory Theory
Student-managed revision across specialised science disciplines — identifying weak topics through past-paper analysis and scheduling retrieval cycles accordingly — developing the self-assessment skills essential for A-Level practical and theory papers.
Socratic Questioning
Rigorous questioning on experimental design and data interpretation — 'What are the limitations of this method?' and 'How does this finding challenge the accepted model?' — cultivating the analytical depth expected in higher-level science.
Bruner's Scaffolding
Minimal guidance on open-ended problems — tutors present unfamiliar experimental scenarios and observe, intervening only to correct fundamental misconceptions — preparing students for the independent investigation demands of advanced science.

Learning Progression
Builds On
Lower secondary Science with foundational concepts in matter, energy, and forces
Prepares For
Sec 4 Combined Science and O-Level Combined Science examinations
Key Transition
Upper secondary Combined Science at Sec 3 requires students to handle two disciplines simultaneously — time management and the ability to switch between chemistry and physics thinking becomes crucial.
“Combined Science covers Physics, Chemistry, and sometimes Biology within a single paper — students must be competent across disciplines without the depth of pure science. We help students identify the high-yield topics in each component and develop efficient revision strategies that maximise marks across all sections.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Combined Science (SEAB syllabus 5086 for Physics/Chemistry, 5087 for Physics/Biology, 5088 for Chemistry/Biology) covers two subjects at a less intensive depth than Pure Sciences (6091 Pure Physics, 6092 Pure Chemistry, 6093 Pure Biology). Combined Science suits students who want broad scientific knowledge without specialising. The O-Level is one paper combining both disciplines. Read our Pure vs Combined Science comparison.
Switching between Combined and Pure Sciences is difficult as Pure Sciences cover more content from Sec 3. If your child shows strong aptitude, we recommend discussing with the school early. Our Combined Science preparation can build foundations if a switch is being considered.
Combined Science opens paths to many university courses and careers that do not require deep scientific specialisation—business, humanities, social sciences, and certain healthcare roles. It provides scientific literacy without intensive specialisation.
We combine topical mastery with timed practice papers, exam technique coaching, and detailed feedback. Our small groups of 3-6 ensure each student gets individual attention on their weakest areas, with targeted revision and error pattern analysis to maximise improvement before the exam. For the 5086 Combined Science (Chem/Phy), we integrate Chemistry calculations and Physics problem-solving across both papers. Learn more in our secondary Science tuition guide.
Sec 3 Combined Science (Chemistry/Physics) lessons at our Bishan and Woodlands centres run weekly for 2 hours, with 3-6 students per class. As Sec 3 begins the O-Level 5086 syllabus, our small groups allow tutors to track progress across both Chemistry and Physics components. Check our pricing page for current fees, or book a trial class — free (usually $18).
Our Bishan centre is 10 minutes on foot from Bishan MRT (NS17/CC15, North-South and Circle Lines). Our Woodlands centre at Vista Point is 5 minutes from Woodlands South MRT (TE3, Thomson-East Coast Line). Sec 3 students from Whitley Secondary, Guangyang Secondary, Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary and Marsiling Secondary, Woodlands Ring Secondary, Woodgrove Secondary attend regularly.
Our small-group classes are intentionally kept between 3 and 6 students so every learner receives close guidance, timely feedback, and ample practice.
Each lesson is 2 hours, providing ample time for thorough coverage of topics and interactive learning.
Yes. All lesson materials and worksheets are provided and included in the fees. Students should bring regular stationery and, where applicable, school textbooks/workbooks for reference.
Yes. Our materials and pacing align with the MOE syllabus. External syllabuses (e.g. IGCSE, IB) are available upon request.
