Content reviewed: Feb 2026
P2 Maths tuition at Ancourage Academy in Bishan and Woodlands, Singapore. In our small classes of 3-6 students, Primary 2 children achieve fluency in times tables (2, 3, 4, 5, 10), division, money, and measurement — the skills that determine upper primary success. Our MOE-aligned weekly 1.5-hour lessons build both speed and understanding so students approach P2 Maths with confidence, not anxiety.
What Makes Us Different
Our proven teaching methodology combines evidence-based approaches for maximum learning effectiveness
Ebbinghaus Memory Theory
Structured number-bond and times-table reviews at widening intervals — daily mental maths warm-ups, weekly problem sets, monthly mixed reviews — so foundational arithmetic becomes instinctive rather than counted on fingers.
Socratic Questioning
Guided discovery through concrete materials — 'How many different ways can you make ten?' and 'What happens when we add one more group?' — helping children see patterns and relationships instead of memorising procedures.
Bruner's Scaffolding
From hands-on manipulatives to visual bar models to abstract number sentences — tutors walk alongside each transition, ensuring children grasp the concept concretely before moving to symbolic representation.

Why Do P2 Students Struggle With Maths?
- 1
Multiplication tables — achieving automatic recall of tables 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 for speed and accuracy
- 2
Fractions — understanding halves and quarters as part of a whole
- 3
Multi-step word problems — knowing when to add vs subtract vs multiply
- 4
Regrouping in subtraction — understanding borrowing across place values
- 5
Showing working systematically — not just writing the answer
Learning Progression
Builds On
P1 Mathematics with number bonds, basic place value, times tables (2, 3, 4, 5, 10), and single-step problems
Prepares For
P3 Mathematics with fractions, times tables 6-9, bar models, and more complex problem-solving
Key Transition
Times tables fluency defines lower primary P2 mathematics — students achieve automatic recall of multiplication facts (2-5, 10) that becomes indispensable for every mathematical concept in upper primary.
“Number sense in P1 to P3 is the single best predictor of later maths success. We use hands-on strategies — number bonds, bar models, mental arithmetic — to make abstract concepts concrete. Children who truly understand 'why' at this stage rarely struggle with 'how' later.”

Frequently Asked Questions
P2 is when multiplication tables must be mastered — this forms the foundation for all upper primary mathematics. Students who struggle with times tables in P2 often face compounding difficulties in P3-P6. We ensure thorough mastery through systematic practice and engaging methods. Read about common primary maths mistakes to avoid.
We teach students to identify keywords, understand what the question is asking, and select the right operation. Using visual aids and step-by-step approaches, we build confidence in tackling multi-step problems that become more common from P2 onwards.
By the end of P2, children should have mastered times tables (2, 3, 4, 5, 10) with automatic recall, understand regrouping in addition and subtraction, grasp halves and quarters in fractions, solve two-step word problems, and read and interpret simple data. These skills prepare them for the increased demands of P3. Read our guide to common primary maths mistakes.
Our Primary 2 Mathematics students come from schools across two catchment areas: Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary, Catholic High Primary, Ai Tong School near our Bishan centre, and Woodlands Primary, Admiralty Primary, Greenwood Primary, Innova Primary near our Woodlands centre. Both centres are within walking distance of an MRT station. Try a class to see if our approach suits your child.
Our small-group classes are intentionally kept between 3 and 6 students so every learner receives close guidance, timely feedback, and ample practice.
Each lesson is 1.5 hours, providing ample time for thorough coverage of topics and interactive learning.
