# Studying Art Overseas: A Guide for Singapore Students

Dreaming of an overseas art degree? Art by Ancourage guides Singapore students through foundation years, top UK and US art schools, portfolios and entry routes.

**Top overseas art schools — UAL in London, RISD, Parsons and Pratt in the US, and RMIT in Australia — admit Singapore students mainly on the strength of a portfolio, often after a one-year art foundation.** The overseas route offers breadth, prestige and a global network, at a significantly higher cost than studying locally. [Art by Ancourage](https://ancourage.academy/art) helps students build portfolios that meet international art-school standards.

This guide explains the foundation year, where to do it, the top destinations, the all-important portfolio, how to apply, and indicative costs. It complements our overview of [studying art after secondary school](https://ancourage.academy/articles/studying-art-after-secondary-school-singapore) and the [local university degrees](https://ancourage.academy/articles/university-art-design-degrees-singapore-guide) guide. To prepare, our [Professional Fine Art Classes](https://ancourage.academy/courses/art/professional) at [Bishan](https://ancourage.academy/find-us/bishan) and [Woodlands](https://ancourage.academy/find-us/woodlands) build the observational and conceptual skills overseas schools assess.

Having guided students through overseas art applications, we have found the portfolio and personal statement do the heavy lifting — strong observational drawing and a clear point of view matter far more than chasing a school's ranking.

## Why Do Most Students Start with a Foundation Year?

**An art and design foundation is a one-year, full-time pre-degree course that lets you explore disciplines not taught at secondary level — drawing, painting, fashion, printmaking, graphics, 3D — and build a strong portfolio before specialising.** It is the standard bridge between school-level art and a degree.

In England and Wales the foundation can be standalone or built into an integrated four-year degree; in Scotland it is usually part of a four-year degree. Many UK art schools prefer or expect a foundation, though strong A-Level or IB applicants may enter a degree directly. The foundation year exists to deepen skills and, crucially, to assemble the portfolio degree interviews depend on.

## Where Should You Do Your Foundation?

**Singapore students can take a foundation in the UK or at home — both are recognised routes into a degree.** The choice often comes down to cost, readiness and whether you want to settle into a country before committing to three years.

- **In the UK:** standalone Foundation Diplomas at art schools such as UAL, plus "International Foundation" courses designed for overseas students. (Note: UAL's Foundation Diploma was open to international applicants only for the 2026/27 cycle — confirm the current intake before applying.)
- **In Singapore:** NAFA's Foundation Programme and LASALLE pathways build drawing, design and visual-literacy skills and feed into their diplomas and degrees — see our [NAFA & LASALLE guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/nafa-lasalle-portfolio-admission-guide-singapore).
- **A diploma as a foundation:** a polytechnic or NAFA/LASALLE diploma can itself act as a springboard to an overseas degree with advanced standing.

## Which Are the Top Overseas Art Schools?

**The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 for Art & Design place several schools at the very top — useful as a starting shortlist, though "fit" and portfolio culture matter more than rank.**

| School | Country | QS Art & Design 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Royal College of Art** (postgraduate only) | UK | #1 |
| **University of the Arts London (UAL)** | UK | #2 |
| **Parsons / The New School** | USA | #3 |
| **Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)** | USA | #4 |
| **Pratt Institute** | USA | #5 |
| **RMIT University** | Australia | #19 (1st in Australia) |

UAL is a federation of six colleges including Central Saint Martins, Chelsea and London College of Communication. Other strong US options include the School of Visual Arts, CalArts, ArtCenter and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The Royal College of Art is postgraduate-only, so it is a master's destination rather than a first-degree one.

## What Does Your Portfolio Need to Show?

**Wherever you apply, the portfolio is the decisive element — schools want to see skill, range and your creative process, with drawing from direct observation valued almost universally.** Indicative counts vary by school.

- **UK (UCAS):** often up to around 30 images, including sketches and drafts that show idea development.
- **RISD:** 12–20 works, strongly recommending observational drawing or painting.
- **Pratt:** around 10–15 pieces of recent work for first-year applicants, ideally including observational drawing.
- **Parsons:** 8–12 pieces plus the "Parsons Challenge" project.

Always check each school's official admissions page for the current brief, and note that many now ask applicants to document any AI-assisted work.

## Applying: UK UCAS, US & Deadlines

**The UK uses one centralised UCAS application (up to five choices); the US is school-by-school, usually via the Common App and a portfolio platform such as SlideRoom.** Interviews and portfolio reviews are common for art and design in both systems.

For the 2026 UK cycle, the equal-consideration deadline was 14 January 2026, with applications accepted until 30 June before Clearing — many institutions keep accepting international applicants later. US deadlines differ by school (RISD, for example, used an Early Decision date of 3 November and Regular Decision of 20 January). A useful advantage for Singapore students: because secondary and JC education here is English-medium, many qualify for an **English-test waiver** (schools such as RISD waive TOEFL/IELTS after three consecutive years of English-medium instruction). Check the [UCAS deadlines](https://www.ucas.com/applying/applying-to-university/dates-and-deadlines-for-uni-applications) and each school's page for current dates.

## Entry Points from Singapore

**Your starting qualification determines whether you need a foundation year or can enter a degree directly.** There is a clean route from every level of the Singapore system.

- **After O-Level:** take a foundation year (UK, NAFA/LASALLE) or a diploma first — O-Level alone rarely allows direct degree entry.
- **After A-Level or IB:** strong grades usually allow direct entry to Year 1 of an overseas bachelor's degree, with a foundation as a fallback.
- **After a polytechnic diploma:** advanced standing is common — roughly one year of credit in the UK (with a good GPA), and one to two years in Australia — so you may shorten the degree.

NAFA also runs degrees with overseas partners, and many diploma graduates progress abroad. For the local-versus-overseas trade-off, revisit our [tertiary pathways overview](https://ancourage.academy/articles/studying-art-after-secondary-school-singapore).

## How Much Does an Overseas Art Degree Cost?

**Overseas art study is expensive, and figures change yearly — treat all amounts as indicative and confirm on official fee pages.** Budget for full tuition plus substantial living costs in cities like London and New York.

For 2026/27, UAL's international undergraduate fee was around £30,890 a year, while RISD's total cost of attendance (tuition, fees and living) was roughly US$90,000–95,000 a year. Scholarships and need-based aid exist but are competitive and rarely cover the full cost for international students, so most families plan around tuition plus living. Fund what you can with our guide to [art scholarships and financial aid](https://ancourage.academy/articles/art-scholarships-financial-aid-singapore-guide), including the NAC Arts Scholarship, which can support overseas degree study. See [UAL tuition fees](https://www.arts.ac.uk/study-at-ual/fees-and-funding/tuition-fees/undergraduate-tuition-fees) for current figures.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Quick answers about studying art and design overseas from Singapore.**

### Do I need a foundation year to study art abroad?

Often, but not always. A one-year art foundation is the standard UK bridge between school and a degree, and many art schools prefer it — especially for O-Level holders. Strong A-Level or IB students can frequently enter a degree directly, and polytechnic or NAFA/LASALLE diploma holders may gain advanced standing. The foundation's main value is building the portfolio that degree admissions depend on.

### What are the best overseas art schools for Singapore students?

In the 2026 QS rankings for Art & Design, University of the Arts London ranks #2, Parsons #3, RISD #4 and Pratt #5, with RMIT first in Australia; the Royal College of Art (#1) is postgraduate-only. UAL, RISD, Parsons, Pratt, SVA, CalArts and SAIC are popular undergraduate choices. Choose by portfolio culture and course fit, not ranking alone.

### Do Singapore students need an English test like IELTS?

Often you can be exempt. Many overseas art schools waive English-language tests for applicants who completed several consecutive years of English-medium education — which most Singapore secondary and JC students have. RISD, for example, waives TOEFL or IELTS after three consecutive years of non-ESL, English-medium instruction. Always confirm each school's specific waiver policy, as requirements differ.

### How much does an overseas art degree cost?

It is a major investment and varies by country and school. As an indication, UAL's international undergraduate fee was about £30,890 a year for 2026/27, and RISD's total annual cost of attendance was roughly US$90,000–95,000, covering tuition, fees and estimated living costs (UAL's fee, by contrast, excludes living). Figures change yearly, so verify on official fee pages and budget for living costs on top of tuition.

### Can I get a scholarship to study art overseas?

Yes, though they are competitive. The National Arts Council (NAC) Arts Scholarship can support full-time arts degrees overseas, and the DesignSingapore Scholarship covers design study abroad. Institutional aid from overseas schools tends to be limited for international students. See our [art scholarships and financial aid](https://ancourage.academy/articles/art-scholarships-financial-aid-singapore-guide) guide for details and eligibility.
