The complete code list, paper structures, grading and pathways. **G1 is a full subject level with its own Secondary Education Certificate syllabuses, its own grading scale of A to E, and three applied subjects that exist at no other level — Mobile Robotics, Smart Electrical Technology and Retail Operations, taught with ITE.** G1 is usually described in a single row of a comparison table and rarely explained on its own terms, which is why Ancourage Academy has written this guide as a G1-first account: the full subject list, the paper structures, how G1 is graded, and what it leads to after Secondary 4. Our [secondary programmes](https://ancourage.academy/courses/academy/secondary) teach G1 subjects in small groups at both centres. ## What G1 Is Under Full Subject-Based Banding **[G1](https://ancourage.academy/glossary#g1) is the foundational subject level under [Full Subject-Based Banding](https://ancourage.academy/articles/full-subject-based-banding-guide-singapore), examined at the former N(T)-Level standard, and set subject by subject rather than as a stream.** That last point is the one most often missed. G1 is not a stream a student is placed into for everything. A student may take Mathematics at G1 and English at G2, or any other combination their performance supports. Because G1 succeeds N(T)-Level, it never had an O-Level ancestor. Two things in that table are worth pausing on, and both are covered below: the MOE-ITE applied subjects, and the absence of any G1 humanities syllabus. ## The Three MOE-ITE Applied Subjects **Mobile Robotics (K130), Smart Electrical Technology (K131) and Retail Operations (K132) are examinable SEC subjects taught in partnership with ITE, and they exist only at G1.** These are the part of G1 that has no counterpart at G2 or G3, and they are the clearest signal of what the level is designed for. A student taking Retail Operations is being taught, examined and certificated in a vocational field at secondary school, with the certificate carrying that subject alongside their English, Mathematics and Science grades. - **They are real examined subjects**, with SEC syllabus codes, not enrichment or co-curricular activities. - **They connect directly to ITE progression.** The applied content maps onto ITE course families rather than to academic subject ladders. - **Availability is school-dependent.** Not every school offers all three; confirm with the school before planning around one. - **They do not substitute for the core.** English, Mathematics and Science remain the backbone of a G1 timetable. ## G1 Paper Structures for the Core Subjects **The four core G1 syllabuses are built around practical communication and applied reasoning, and their paper structures differ noticeably from their G2 and G3 equivalents.** | Subject | Code | Papers | Total marks | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | English Language | K100 | Writing · Language use and comprehension · Listening · Oral (reading aloud and spoken interaction) | 190 | | Mathematics | K110 | Paper 1 number, algebra, geometry and measurement · Paper 2 number, algebra, statistics and probability — 50 marks and 1h 30min each | 100 | | Science | K123 | Paper 1 e-exam with multiple choice, selected response, short-answer and structured items, some using video, animation or interactive stimuli (1h 15min) · Paper 2 short-answer and structured (1h) | 100 | | Chinese Language | K120 | Paper 1 writing, a typed response to an online post (30min) · Paper 2 language use and reading comprehension, e-exam (40min) · Paper 3 oral and listening | 100 | Two design choices stand out. G1 Science and G1 Chinese are both partly delivered as e-examinations, and G1 Chinese weights the oral and listening component at 65 of its 100 marks — the spoken language is the subject's centre of gravity, not an add-on. Humanities at G1 is taught as G1 Humanities — Social Studies plus Humanities Exposure Modules in Geography, History and Literature in English — which MOE states “will continue to be a non-examinable subject”, so it is not examined at the SEC.** This matters for planning because it removes a question that occupies G2 and G3 families. A G1 student is not choosing between Combined Humanities and a pure humanities elective, and the humanities decision described in our [Sec 3 subject combination guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/sec-3-subject-combination-guide-singapore) does not apply to them in the same way. Their subject choices concentrate on the core subjects and the applied options. ## How G1 Is Graded **G1 subjects are graded A to E, the same scale the N(T)-Level used, and the certificate is awarded at Grade D or better.** This differs from both other levels. G2 subjects are graded 1 to 6, with the certificate awarded at Grade 5 or better, and G3 subjects are graded A1 to D7, E8 and 9, with the certificate awarded at E8 or better. All three appear on one SEC certificate, which our [SEC 2027 guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/sec-exam-2027-singapore-new-national-examination) explains — a student no longer receives separate certificates for subjects taken at different levels. ## Where G1 Leads After Secondary 4 **G1 grades lead primarily to ITE, which accepts G1 and G2 grades directly from the SEC certificate — and for junior college and Millennia Institute admission a G1 Mother Tongue grade of A to D satisfies the separate mother tongue requirement, even though every subject in the JC/MI aggregate must be at G3.** That second point is a genuine nuance worth knowing. MOE's [JC and MI admission criteria](https://www.moe.gov.sg/post-secondary/admissions/pse/jc-and-mi) require that "All subjects used in aggregate score computation for JC and MI admissions must be taken at G3", but the separate mother tongue requirement lists acceptable grades by level, including "G1: A to D". The aggregate rule and the mother tongue rule are different rules. - **ITE:** the principal route from a G1 profile, reached through the unified Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise using SEC results directly. From the 2028 admissions exercise, entry to a 3-year _Higher_ Nitec course is set at G1 and its aggregate is computed on G1 equivalent grades — so G1 results are scored, not merely accepted, and even a G1 grade of E can enter that computation (though it cannot satisfy a course's subject-specific minimum entry requirement). Direct entry to a 2-year Higher Nitec course is set one level up, at G2, on an ELMAB3 aggregate of 19 or better. - **Subject-level movement:** a student who strengthens in one subject can be moved to G2 in that subject, which changes the options available later. - **Polytechnic:** reached from G2 grades through the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (ELMAB3, computed on G2 grades), while direct polytechnic admission needs English, both relevant subjects and the first best subject at G3 — so any G1 to G2 movement is consequential, and G2 to G3 more so. - **Applied subjects:** the MOE-ITE subjects give a student examined evidence in a vocational field before they apply. That is where effort converts into options. - **Prioritise English and Mathematics.** They anchor promotion criteria and post-secondary aggregates alike. - **Take the e-examination formats seriously.** G1 Science and G1 Chinese both include e-exam components, and familiarity with the interface is part of the preparation. - **Practise the oral.** G1 Chinese weights oral and listening at 65 of 100 marks, and G1 English allocates 40 marks to the oral against 30 at G2 and G3 — the weighting stays 20% at every level, but the raw marks are higher. - **Ask the school about applied subjects early.** Availability varies, and the choice is made before Secondary 3. SEAB lists fifteen G1 syllabuses: English Language (K100), Mathematics (K110), Chinese, Malay and Tamil Language (K120 to K122), Science (K123), Design and Technology (K124), Nutrition and Food Science (K125), Art (K126), Computing (K127), Music (K128), Elements of Business Skills (K129), and three MOE-ITE applied subjects — Mobile Robotics (K130), Smart Electrical Technology (K131) and Retail Operations (K132). ### What are the MOE-ITE applied subjects at G1? They are three examinable SEC subjects taught in partnership with ITE and offered only at G1: Mobile Robotics (K130), Smart Electrical Technology (K131) and Retail Operations (K132). They carry syllabus codes and appear on the SEC certificate like any other subject, and they connect directly to ITE course families. Availability varies by school. ### How is G1 graded? G1 subjects are graded A to E, the same scale used by the N(T)-Level, with the certificate awarded at Grade D or better.
