# PSLE Chinese Comprehension: Reading & Cloze Techniques

The reading half of PSLE Chinese — cloze and comprehension — is where English-dominant students lose the most marks. This guide breaks down 短文填空, 阅读理解, and how to answer each.

**The reading components of PSLE Chinese Paper 2 — the cloze and the comprehension passages — are where students from English-dominant homes lose the most marks, because these sections reward contextual vocabulary and precise answering rather than memorised phrases.** Composition gets most of the attention, but Paper 2's reading sections carry more marks and respond well to technique. This guide is from [Ancourage Academy](https://ancourage.academy/academy), whose [primary Chinese tuition](https://ancourage.academy/courses/academy/primary/chinese) teaches the reading sections as answerable skills in small groups of 3–6.

This is a single-paper deep-dive on the reading and language-use sections. For the whole-subject overview, see our [PSLE Chinese tips guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/psle-chinese-tips-singapore); for the composition (作文) paper, see our [PSLE Chinese composition guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/psle-chinese-composition-score-al1-strategy-singapore). This article covers the reading components, not composition.

**If your child understands spoken Chinese but struggles with the reading paper, Ancourage Academy's [P6 Chinese programme](https://ancourage.academy/courses/academy/primary/p6/chinese) builds reading and answering technique directly — [book a free trial class (usually $18)](https://ancourage.academy/trial-class) for a diagnostic assessment.**

## What Are the Reading Components of PSLE Chinese Paper 2?

**PSLE Chinese Paper 2 (语文应用与阅读理解, Language Use and Comprehension) is worth 90 marks — 45% of the subject — over 1 hour 40 minutes, and the reading and cloze components make up the bulk of it.**

| Section | Format | Marks |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 语文应用 (Language Application) | MCQ, 15 questions | 30 |
| 短文填空 (Comprehension Cloze) | MCQ, 5 questions | 10 |
| 阅读理解一 (Reading Comprehension 1) | MCQ, 5 questions | 10 |
| 完成对话 (Dialogue Completion) | MCQ, 4 questions | 8 |
| 阅读理解二 (Reading Comprehension 2) | MCQ + open-ended, 11 questions | 32 |

Per the current [SEAB PSLE Chinese syllabus (0005)](https://www.seab.gov.sg/psle/psle-formats-examined-in-2026/), the comprehension cloze section is officially named 短文填空 (you may also see it called 综合填空 in tutoring materials — they refer to the same section). Note that 阅读理解一 is multiple-choice, while 阅读理解二 carries the largest single block of reading marks and is predominantly open-ended (with a few shorter multiple-choice and 书面互动 items). The whole subject totals 200 marks across Writing, this paper, Oral, and Listening.

## How Do You Answer the 短文填空 Comprehension Cloze?

**The cloze passage removes words and asks you to choose the best option for each blank from given choices — and the right answer is the one that fits both the grammar and the meaning of the surrounding sentences, not just the blank itself.**

The technique is to read the whole passage first for the overall meaning, then test each option in the blank by reading the full sentence (and often the sentence before and after). The wrong options are usually plausible words that break the meaning, the collocation, or the logical flow. Because it is multiple-choice, never leave a blank empty — eliminate the options that clearly do not fit and choose the best of the rest.

## How Do You Tackle 阅读理解一 (MCQ Comprehension)?

**The multiple-choice comprehension section gives a passage and asks you to select the most appropriate answer, so the skill is locating the relevant part of the text and eliminating options that the passage does not support.**

Read the question first so you know what to look for, then find the part of the passage it refers to. Each option should be checked against the text: the correct answer is stated or directly implied, while distractors typically twist a detail, overstate it, or describe something the passage never says. Resist choosing an option just because it contains words that appear in the passage — that is the most common trap.

## How Do You Answer Open-Ended PSLE Chinese Comprehension (阅读理解二)?

**阅读理解二 is the highest-value reading block (32 marks across 11 questions, based on two passages and a functional text); it mixes a few shorter multiple-choice and 书面互动 items with the open-ended questions that carry most of the marks — and those open-ended questions require answering in your own words, locating the relevant information and rephrasing it accurately.**

The reliable approach mirrors good comprehension answering in any language:

- **Read the question carefully (根据篇章):** the instruction to answer based on the passage means your answer must come from the text, not from general knowledge.
- **Locate the evidence:** find the sentence or section that answers the question before writing.
- **Rephrase, do not copy wholesale:** as with English comprehension, lifting long stretches verbatim is weaker than capturing the specific point in your own words.
- **Match the question word:** a "why" (为什么) question needs a reason; a "how" (怎样) question needs a method; answering the wrong question type loses the mark even when the content is relevant.

This section also includes a functional text and written interaction (书面互动), where answers must suit the practical context — reading the scenario closely matters as much as the language.

## What Are the Most Common PSLE Chinese Reading Mistakes?

**Most PSLE Chinese reading mistakes come from guessing vocabulary instead of using context and passage evidence.**

| Mistake | Why It Costs Marks | The Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Choosing an option by keyword match | Distractors reuse passage words | Check the option against the meaning, not just the vocabulary |
| Cloze answered blank-by-blank | Misses the passage's overall logic | Read the whole passage first, then test options in full sentences |
| Copying long stretches in open-ended answers | Does not show understanding and wastes time | Locate the point, then rephrase it concisely |
| Answering the wrong question word | "Why" answered with "what", etc. | Underline 为什么 / 怎样 / 什么 and match the answer to it |
| Leaving MCQ blanks empty | No chance of the mark | Eliminate and choose the best remaining option — never leave it blank |

## How Can You Build PSLE Chinese Reading Skill?

**Reading marks in Chinese improve with exposure and targeted practice — vocabulary built through reading is what makes cloze and comprehension feel manageable rather than guessed.**

- **Read Chinese regularly:** even short daily reading (a children's news site, graded readers, 联合早报's student content) builds the contextual vocabulary the cloze and comprehension reward.
- **Practise by section:** drill cloze passages and open-ended comprehension separately so each technique is reinforced.
- **Review answers against the passage:** for every wrong answer, find the exact line in the text that gives the correct one — this trains evidence-based answering.

## Common Questions About PSLE Chinese Comprehension

### What is 短文填空 in PSLE Chinese?

短文填空 is the comprehension cloze section of PSLE Chinese Paper 2 — a short passage with blanks where you select the best word for each gap from given options. It is multiple-choice, worth 10 marks across 5 questions. Some tutoring materials call it 综合填空, but 短文填空 is the term used in the current SEAB syllabus. The skill is choosing the option that fits the meaning and grammar of the whole sentence, not just the blank.

### How many marks is PSLE Chinese comprehension worth?

Within Paper 2 (90 marks, 45% of the subject), the reading sections are 短文填空 (10 marks, MCQ), 阅读理解一 (10 marks, MCQ), and 阅读理解二 (32 marks, mostly open-ended), alongside 语文应用 (30 marks) and 完成对话 (8 marks). 阅读理解二 is the single largest reading block at 32 marks, and because the bulk of those marks are open-ended, answering technique there has the greatest impact on the grade.

### How do I answer open-ended Chinese comprehension questions?

Read the question to identify what it asks (根据篇章 means answer from the passage), locate the relevant sentence, then rephrase the point in your own words rather than copying long stretches. Match your answer to the question word — a 为什么 (why) question needs a reason, a 怎样 (how) question needs a method. Answering the wrong question type, or lifting irrelevant lines, are the most common ways marks are lost in this section.

### Why do English-speaking children struggle with PSLE Chinese reading?

The reading sections depend on a breadth of vocabulary and a feel for natural Chinese phrasing that come from regular reading, which English-dominant households often have less of. Spoken fluency does not automatically transfer to recognising the right word in a cloze or understanding a written passage. Consistent Chinese reading — even short, daily — is the most effective long-term fix, supported by targeted practice on each section's technique.
