# Higher Chinese 实用文: Email and Online Forum Post (K355)

Higher Chinese 实用文 (K355) means an email or an online forum post of at least 220 characters. Two annotated models, a phrase bank and a practice plan.

**In Higher Chinese (K355, formerly O-Level 1116), 实用文 (functional writing) is a 20-mark task in Paper 1 where the candidate chooses one of two questions and writes at least 220 characters: either an email based on the material given, or an online forum post giving a view on a topic in response to the statements provided.** Ancourage Academy teaches this task in its [Sec 3 Higher Chinese programme](https://ancourage.academy/courses/academy/secondary/s3/higher-chinese) and its [Sec 4 Higher Chinese programme](https://ancourage.academy/courses/academy/secondary/s4/higher-chinese). A competent Standard Chinese email is not quite enough here: the Higher Chinese task is longer, offers a second format Standard Chinese does not have, and leans towards argument. This guide compares the two syllabuses, takes the forum post apart, gives two annotated models, and ends with a 25-phrase bank and a practice plan.

**Ancourage Academy's [Sec 2 Higher Chinese](https://ancourage.academy/courses/academy/secondary/s2/higher-chinese) classes run in small groups of 3 to 6; book a [trial class (usually $18)](https://ancourage.academy/trial-class) to start with a diagnostic of where your child stands.**

Still choosing a level? Read our [Higher Chinese vs Standard Chinese decision guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/higher-chinese-vs-standard-chinese-decision-guide-singapore) first. If your child sits Standard Chinese, the email task there is covered in our [O-Level / SEC Chinese email templates guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/o-level-sec-chinese-email-writing-templates-singapore); this article covers only what is different at [Higher Chinese](https://ancourage.academy/glossary#hcl). For the whole K355 paper, start with our [Higher Chinese secondary guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/higher-chinese-secondary-tuition-singapore).

## What Is 实用文 in the Higher Chinese K355 Paper?

**实用文 is Part 1 of Paper 1 (Writing): one question chosen from two, at least 220 characters, worth 20 marks or 10% of the subject.**

Every phrase in the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) wording for the 2027 [Secondary Education Certificate](https://ancourage.academy/glossary#sec) matters. The 2026 O-Level Higher Chinese syllabus, 1116, uses exactly the same sentence, so a Sec 4 student sitting the last O-Level in 2026 and a Sec 3 student sitting the first [G3](https://ancourage.academy/glossary#g3) SEC paper in 2027 are preparing for the same task.

Read it as three instructions:

- **“根据所提供的材料写一则电邮”** — the email is built from the material in the question, so use what you were given.
在网上论坛发表看法”** — the forum option asks for a view, which makes it an argument, not a description.
- **“结合所提供的言论”** — the forum post must engage with the statements printed in the question. A post that ignores them answers a different question.

Paper 1 is 2 hours, 80 marks and 40% of the subject, and also contains the composition (作文): one of three questions, at least 500 characters, 60 marks. Candidates may use a dictionary prescribed by SEAB. The composition carries three times the marks of 实用文, the best argument for writing 实用文 efficiently rather than at length.

## How Does Higher Chinese 实用文 Differ from Standard Chinese K320?

**Both syllabuses give 实用文 20 marks and 10% of the subject, but Higher Chinese raises the minimum from 150 to 220 characters and adds the online forum post as a second format.**

The table below is taken from the two 2027 SEAB syllabuses, [K320 Chinese Language](https://isomer-user-content.by.gov.sg/334/5ef8f46f-c9a2-4957-bb9d-14b534f2043b/K320_y27_sy.pdf) and K355 Higher Chinese Language.

| Feature | Standard Chinese (K320) | Higher Chinese (K355) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Choice | One of two questions | One of two questions |
| Formats | Reply to an email provided, or write an email from the material given | Write an email from the material given, or post a view on an online forum |
| Syllabus wording | “根据所提供的一个电邮内容写一个回复电邮，或者根据所提供的材料，写一个电邮” | “根据所提供的材料写一则电邮；也可以针对话题，结合所提供的言论，在网上论坛发表看法” |
| Minimum length | 150 characters and above | 220 characters and above |
| Marks and weighting | 20 marks, 10% | 20 marks, 10% |
| Paper 1 total | 60 marks, 30%, 2 hours | 80 marks, 40%, 2 hours |
| Composition in the same paper | At least 300 characters, 40 marks | At least 500 characters, 60 marks |
10 marks |

The last row matters. The published 实用文 marking guides in Appendix A of both syllabuses split the 20 marks the same way, 10 for content and 10 for language and structure, with the same four bands and near-identical descriptors. What changes at Higher Chinese is the task, not the scale. For the full paper layout, see our [Higher Chinese secondary tuition guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/higher-chinese-secondary-tuition-singapore) and [secondary Chinese strategies guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/secondary-chinese-strategies-singapore).

## Is 演讲词 (a Speech) a 实用文 Format in Higher Chinese?

**No. In K355 the speech (演讲词) belongs to the composition section as a form of argumentative writing, with a 500-character minimum; it is not one of the two 实用文 formats.**

The syllabus lists the composition genres as “记叙文、说明文和议论文（包括演讲词）” — narrative, expository and argumentative writing, with the speech included under argumentative. Because a speech has a format (address, greeting, closing), it is easy to file it under practical writing. For the national paper that filing costs twice: a student who drills speeches as 实用文 practises a 220-character piece for a task that needs 500, and a student who never wrote a forum post meets it for the first time in the exam.

The two share one skill, taking a position and defending it, so the phrase bank below works for both. For the composition side, see our [O-Level / SEC Chinese composition guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/o-level-sec-chinese-composition-guide-singapore).

## What Goes Into an Online Forum Post

**A strong forum post has a title that states the position, a clear stand in the opening lines, two reasons each backed by an example, a response to the statements in the question, and a closing that restates the view and invites reply.**

The syllabus does not publish a layout for either format; the layouts students learn come from school practice. The layout below follows from the job the syllabus gives each format.

| Part | Forum post (网上论坛帖文) | HCL email (电邮) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Heading | 标题 / 帖子主题: states the position, not just the topic | 收件人 and 主题: who it is to, and what it is about |
| Greeting | Optional; a short 各位同学 or 大家好 fits a school forum | Required and matched to the reader, e.g. 尊敬的王经理 |
| Opening | 立场: the view in one or two sentences | Who you are and why you are writing |
| Body | 理由 + 举例: two reasons, each with a concrete example | The points in the material, each one covered and developed |
| Engagement | 回应他人观点: concede or rebut the statements given | A request, concern or question the reader must act on |
| Closing | 结尾: restate the view, invite others to reply | Thanks, 祝语, 署名 and date |
| Register | Reasoned and civil; firm but not rude | Formal and polite; the reader is usually an adult or an organisation |

Two features separate a Higher Chinese forum post from a Sec 2 opinion paragraph. First, “结合所提供的言论” means the post should name at least one printed statement and agree with, qualify or rebut it. Second, the example: “我认为手机会让人分心” is a claim; what actually happens in a lesson when a phone buzzes is evidence. The published content descriptor asks for “内容有层次，说明详尽、有条理”, and a reason without an example is rarely 详尽.

## What Does a Strong Higher Chinese Forum Post Look Like?

**A strong forum post takes a side in its title, argues two reasons with examples, answers the opposing statement directly, and clears the 220-character minimum without padding.**

The prompt below is original and illustrative; it is not a past-year SEAB question. The model runs to about 340 Chinese characters, past 220 without padding.

**Illustrative prompt.**

**Model forum post.**

What each part is doing:

- **标题** states the verdict, 利大于弊, so a reader knows the position before the first line.
- **Opening paragraph** names the debate, gives the stand and signposts “两点”, a structure the marker can follow.
- **首先 / 其次** each carry one reason followed by a concrete consequence, which turns a list into an argument.
不过……因此** is the concession-and-rebuttal move. It quotes 甲, grants the fair part, then shows why it does not decide the question — this is where “结合所提供的言论” is satisfied.
- **总而言之** restates the view in new words and closes with an invitation to reply, which is what makes it a forum post rather than an essay.

## What Does a Strong Higher Chinese Email Look Like?

**A strong Higher Chinese email covers every point in the material, adds a sensible suggestion and a clear request, and keeps a formal register from greeting to sign-off.**

The Higher Chinese email differs from the Standard Chinese one less in layout than in depth: at 220 characters there is room to develop points rather than list them. The prompt is again original and illustrative, and the model runs to about 370 Chinese characters.

**Illustrative prompt.**

What each part is doing:

- **收件人 and 主题** make the purpose visible before the body starts; 报名 in the subject tells the reader what action is being taken.
- **Opening** identifies the writer, the role and the reason for writing in a single sentence, using formal markers such as 谨代表 and 贵中心.
- **Second paragraph** shows the material was read, then gives a two-sided reason with 一方面…… This is the development that separates a 220-character email from a 150-character one.
- **Third and fourth paragraphs** supply the arrangement and the specific request the prompt asked for. Skip them and fluency cannot rescue the content mark.
- **Closing** sets a reply deadline and ends with a conventional 祝语 and 敬上; a casual sign-off after a formal body is an easy register error to avoid.

## Which Phrases Carry an Argument in Higher Chinese?

**Five moves carry most opinion writing — stating a position, giving an example, rebutting, conceding and concluding — and a small bank of phrases for each lets a student spend exam time on ideas rather than on wording.**

The 25 phrases below are standard connectives, not a template. Vary them: the marking guide rewards “语言表达清楚”, and one opener used four times reads as a formula.

The rebuttal and concession phrases matter most for the forum format, because responding to the given statements is written into the task. The same five moves drive the argumentative essay and the speech in the composition section.

## Where Do Higher Chinese 实用文 Answers Lose Marks?

**Most lost marks trace back to the two published criteria: content that does not fully answer the question (内容), and language or organisation that gets in the way of the message (语文与结构).**

SEAB publishes band descriptors, not a list of deductions, so the points below are general guidance read against those descriptors. The top content band in the [1116 Higher Chinese syllabus (2026)](https://isomer-user-content.by.gov.sg/334/7ddaa983-3da0-4ac4-96a7-3816e3ac61c9/1116_y26_sy_2.pdf) and in K355 reads “内容充实，切合题意” and “内容有层次，说明详尽、有条理”; the top language band asks that “语句通顺” and that the piece be “组织得当，衔接紧凑，段落分明”.

- **Missing a point from the material.** The email is built from what the question supplies. Skipping one required element is the most direct way to fall short of 切合题意.
- **Ignoring the given statements.** A forum post that never engages the printed statements has not done what “结合所提供的言论” asks.
- **Claims without examples.** Two bare reasons rarely read as 说明详尽. Each reason needs a consequence or a case.
- **Register slips.** 你 instead of 您 to a manager, slang in a formal email, or a hostile tone in a forum post all weaken the language mark.
- **Falling short of 220 characters.** The syllabus sets the minimum. Count while practising so length stops being a worry in the exam.
- **Writing too much.** The composition carries 60 of Paper 1's 80 marks; extra 实用文 length is time taken from it.
- **Character and punctuation errors.** The language descriptor names 汉字的书写、词语、语法及标点符号 explicitly; using Chinese punctuation (，。“”：) is an easy habit to fix early.

## How Should a Sec 2 to Sec 4 Student Practise

**Practise the two formats separately until each layout is automatic, then practise them timed alongside a composition, because in the exam they share one 2-hour paper.**

Lower-secondary papers are set by each school, so check your school's Sec 2 format; from Sec 3, practise to the national task.

1. **Sec 2: build the moves.** Write short opinion paragraphs using the phrase bank, one move at a time, until a concession-and-rebuttal paragraph sounds natural.
2. **Sec 3, first half: learn both layouts.** Write one email and one forum post a fortnight on different topics. Check each against the anatomy table above before checking the language.
3. **Sec 3, second half: work from material.** Underline every point in a notice or news summary, write, then tick each point off in your draft.
4. **Sec 4, first half: time the pair.** Sit 实用文 and a composition together in 2 hours. Decide your split beforehand and record how long 实用文 actually took.
5. **Sec 4, second half: choose fast.** Pick between the email and the forum question early, by which one you can develop with better examples.

Wide reading supplies the examples a forum post needs; see our [文言文 study guide](https://ancourage.academy/articles/higher-chinese-classical-chinese-wenyanwen-study-guide-singapore) and [Higher Chinese overview](https://ancourage.academy/articles/higher-chinese-singapore-guide). For lower secondary, the [Sec 2 Higher Chinese programme](https://ancourage.academy/courses/academy/secondary/s2/higher-chinese) builds the argument moves before exam formats arrive. A [trial class (usually $18)](https://ancourage.academy/trial-class) begins with a diagnostic of the student's current level, so the work that follows targets their actual gaps.

## Common Questions About Higher Chinese 实用文

### What are the 实用文 formats in O-Level / SEC Higher Chinese?

Two. The K355 syllabus lets candidates write an email based on the material provided, or post a view on an online forum in response to a topic and the statements given, choosing one of two questions. The 2026 O-Level syllabus, 1116, uses the same wording, so the formats do not change with the move to the SEC in 2027.

### How many characters must a Higher Chinese 实用文 be?

At least 220 characters, according to both the 2026 O-Level 1116 syllabus and the 2027 SEC K355 syllabus. Standard Chinese K320 sets 150 characters. The composition in the same Higher Chinese paper needs at least 500 characters, and both parts share the 2-hour Paper 1, so aim to clear 220 with developed points rather than write at great length.

### Is a speech (演讲词) tested as 实用文 in Higher Chinese?

No. The K355 syllabus places 演讲词 under the composition section as part of argumentative writing, with a 500-character minimum. The 实用文 formats are the email and the online forum post only. Students who practise speeches as 实用文 are preparing for a shorter task than the one the speech actually appears in.

### How is Higher Chinese 实用文 marked?

Out of 20: 10 marks for content (内容) and 10 for language and structure (语文与结构), each in four bands, according to Appendix A of the SEAB syllabus. The top content band asks for content that is full and on-task, layered, detailed and organised; the top language band asks for fluent sentences, accurate characters and punctuation, clear expression and well-joined paragraphs.

### Should my child choose the email or the forum post in the exam?

Whichever question they can develop better on the day. The email rewards careful use of every point in the material; the forum post rewards a clear stand, examples and a response to the statements given. Students who have practised both can choose on the strength of the topic rather than being forced into the format they know.
