# G1, G2 and G3 English: What Differs at Each Level

G1, G2 and G3 English are three separate SEC syllabuses — K100, K200 and K300. How the papers, marks and weightings differ, and what each level leads to.

**G1, G2 and G3 English are three separate syllabuses under the Secondary Education Certificate — K100, K200 and K300 — and the difference between them is not what most parents expect: G2 and G3 share an identical four-paper structure and identical mark allocations, while G1 is the level that is genuinely built differently.** This guide from Ancourage Academy is a level-navigation guide, not a technique guide: it compares the three syllabuses paper by paper so you can see which level your child is entered for and what that means. ## Three Levels, Three Syllabus Codes

**Under [Full Subject-Based Banding](https://ancourage.academy/articles/full-subject-based-banding-guide-singapore), English is taken at one of three subject levels, each with its own [SEC](https://ancourage.academy/glossary#sec) syllabus code: K100 at [G1](https://ancourage.academy/glossary#g1), K200 at [G2](https://ancourage.academy/glossary#g2) and K300 at [G3](https://ancourage.academy/glossary#g3).**

Because English is set per subject rather than per stream, a student can take English at G2 while taking other subjects at G3, or the reverse. SEAB publishes the code lists on its [G2 syllabuses page](https://www.seab.gov.sg/secondary-education-certificate-sec/g2-syllabuses-for-school-candidates-2027/) and its [G1 syllabuses page](https://www.seab.gov.sg/secondary-education-certificate-sec/g1-syllabuses-for-school-candidates-2027/), where English Language appears as K200 and K100 respectively.

## The Surprise: G2 and G3 English Share the Same Paper Structure

**K200 and K300 have the same four papers, the same mark allocations and the same durations. What separates them is the demand of the material and the standard of the expected response — not the architecture of the examination.**

This has a practical consequence worth stating plainly to a student who reads a G2 placement as a demotion: the examination they will sit has the same shape as the G3 one. Every paper has a counterpart, the weightings match, and technique built at one level transfers to the other without relearning the format. The published differences are lengths: Situational Writing asks for 180–250 words at G2 and 250–350 at G3, Continuous Writing asks for 250–400 words at G2 and 350–500 at G3, and Paper 2's Texts 3 and 4 together run to about 1,000 words at G2 against 1,200 at G3. ## How G1 English (K100) Is Genuinely Different

**K100 is the level with a materially different design: 190 total marks rather than 180, a differently weighted comprehension paper, a smaller listening component, and Reading Aloud in place of Planned Response in the oral.**

-   **Comprehension carries more weight.** Paper 2 is 40% at G1 against 35% at G2 and G3, and it opens with a 20-mark Language Use section — two modified cloze passages testing vocabulary and grammar — before the narrative and non-narrative comprehension texts.
-   **Writing carries less.** Paper 1 drops to 30% and to 1 hour 20 minutes, against 35% and 1 hour 50 minutes at the other two levels.
-   **The oral is worth more marks.** 40 marks at G1 against 30, and Reading Aloud replaces Planned Response — a different spoken task, not a simplified one.
-   **Listening is smaller.** 20 marks at G1 against 30, though the weighting stays at 10%.

## Reading the Comparison Side by Side

**Set against each other, the pattern is clear: G1 shifts weighting from writing to comprehension and gives the oral more marks at an unchanged 20%, while G2 and G3 hold an identical balance and differ only in demand.**

## What Each Level Leads To After Secondary 4

**Every subject counted in the junior college aggregate must be taken at G3, and the direct polytechnic (ELR2B2) aggregate pins its EL slot to a G3 English grade; G2 English can still carry a student into the Polytechnic Foundation Programme, whose ELMAB3 aggregate uses G2-equivalent grades, and English at G1 or G2 appears on the same SEC certificate and supports the ITE route.**

MOE states on its [JC and MI admission criteria page](https://www.moe.gov.sg/post-secondary/admissions/pse/jc-and-mi) that "All subjects used in aggregate score computation for JC and MI admissions must be taken at G3." The L1 slot in that aggregate can be filled by G3 English Language or by Higher Mother Tongue Language, so English is not automatically the L1 — but whichever subject fills it must be taken at G3.

The polytechnic route pins English to G3 as well. MOE's [polytechnic diploma course page](https://www.moe.gov.sg/post-secondary/admissions/pse/polytechnic-diploma-course) states that in the ELR2B2 net aggregate, "EL, R1, R2 and B1 will use G3 subject grade, while B2 will use G2 equivalent grade" — so the EL slot requires a G3 English grade, and only the second best-subject slot is scored at G2 equivalent. G2 English can also supply the English slot in the Polytechnic Foundation Programme's ELMAB3 aggregate, which is computed on G2-equivalent grades; G1 English cannot. English at G1 or G2 still appears on the SEC certificate and still supports ITE, which accepts G1 and G2 grades directly. ## Which Level Fits, and How Levels Change

**The level is set by the school on evidence of performance, reviewed at defined points, and can move in either direction — it is not a one-time decision made at Secondary 1.**

-   **Match the level to current performance, not to ambition alone.** A student placed above their present standard in English loses marks across every paper, since English underpins comprehension in other subjects too.
-   **Watch the G3 constraint early.** The polytechnic aggregate pins its EL slot to a G3 English grade outright. Junior college pins it twice: every aggregate subject must be at G3, and MOE separately requires G3 English Language at A1 to C6 even when Higher Mother Tongue Language fills the L1 slot. Either way, a subject only counts if it is examined at G3 — which makes this a Secondary 2 to 3 conversation rather than a Secondary 4 one.
-   **Remember that G2 and G3 share a format.** Moving between them is a change of demand, not of examination structure.

## Common Questions About G1, G2 and G3 English

### What are the SEC syllabus codes for English at each level?

English is K100 at G1, K200 at G2 and K300 at G3. K300 replaces the former O-Level syllabus 1184 and K200 replaces the former N(A)-Level syllabus 1190. Each is a separate syllabus rather than a variant of one paper.

### What is the difference between G2 and G3 English?

Structurally, nothing. K200 and K300 share the same four papers, the same mark allocations — 70 for writing, 50 for comprehension, 30 for listening and 30 for oral — the same weightings and the same durations, totalling 180 marks. The published differences inside the papers are lengths: Situational Writing is 180–250 words at G2 against 250–350 at G3, Continuous Writing is 250–400 against 350–500, and Paper 2's Texts 3 and 4 together are about 1,000 words against 1,200. Beyond that, the difference is the demand of the material and the standard expected in a response: G3 is examined at the former O-Level standard and G2 at the former N(A)-Level standard.

### How is G1 English different from G2 and G3?

G1 English (K100) totals 190 marks rather than 180 and is balanced differently. Comprehension is weighted 40% against 35%, writing is 30% against 35% and runs 1 hour 20 minutes rather than 1 hour 50, the oral is worth 40 marks rather than 30, and the oral task is Reading Aloud rather than Planned Response. It is a differently designed examination, not a shortened one.

### Can my child take English at G3 and other subjects at G2?

Yes. Under Full Subject-Based Banding the level is set per subject, so a student may take English at G3 while taking other subjects at G2 or G1, in whatever combination matches their performance. Schools set and review these levels on evidence, and they can move in either direction.

### Does English need to be at G3 for junior college?

Yes. Beyond the rule that every subject used in the junior college and Millennia Institute aggregate from 2028 must be taken at G3, MOE lists G3 English Language at A1 to C6 as a specific-subject grade requirement for JC and MI admission, so English must be at G3 whether or not it fills the L1 slot (which can also be filled by Higher Mother Tongue Language). For polytechnic admission, MOE states that in the ELR2B2 aggregate "EL, R1, R2 and B1 will use G3 subject grade, while B2 will use G2 equivalent grade", so the English slot there is also pinned to G3.
