# Using AI for English & Composition: What Helps, What Hurts

AI can strengthen English skills when used for feedback, vocabulary, and idea development — but letting it write your composition undermines the exact skill being assessed. Here is the line.

**AI tools like ChatGPT can strengthen a student's English when used to develop ideas, build vocabulary, and give feedback — but the moment AI writes the composition itself, it removes the personal voice and original thinking that PSLE and O-Level / SEC English actually assess.** At [Ancourage Academy](https://ancourage.academy/academy), we teach students to use AI as an editor and sparring partner, not a ghostwriter, alongside structured [secondary English tuition](https://ancourage.academy/courses/academy/secondary) and our practical [AI workshops for students](https://ancourage.academy/ai-workshops/for-students).

According to [MOE's AI in Education framework](https://www.moe.gov.sg/education-in-sg/educational-technology-journey/edtech-masterplan/artificial-intelligence-in-education), AI should enhance learning, not bypass it. In English, where assessment rewards a student's own ideas, structure, and expression, that distinction matters more than in almost any other subject.

## Where Does AI Genuinely Help English Learning?

**Used well, AI is a powerful feedback and practice tool for the parts of English that improve with iteration.**

- **Idea generation:** Ask AI to suggest angles or ask you questions about a composition topic, so you develop your own plot — not its plot.
- **Vocabulary in context:** "Give me five stronger verbs for 'walked' and use each in a sentence" builds usable vocabulary, not just word lists.
- **Feedback on your draft:** AI can flag weak transitions, repetitive sentence openings, or unclear paragraphs — pointing out problems for you to fix.
- **Comprehension practice:** AI can generate inference questions on a passage and check whether your answer addresses the question asked.

## Why Does Using AI Hurt Composition?

**The single most damaging use is asking AI to write the essay, because composition is assessed on the student's own content, language, and organisation.**

When AI writes the piece, three things happen: the student stops practising the planning and sentence-construction skills the exam tests; the writing develops a generic voice that experienced markers recognise; and the student cannot reproduce that quality under exam conditions, where no AI is available. A student who leans on AI to write may post strong homework grades and then underperform sharply in the exam hall.

## What Does Strong AI Use in English Look Like?

**The difference is whether the AI does the writing or coaches the writer.**

| Task | Weak (harmful) use | Strong (helpful) use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Composition | "Write me a story about courage." | "Ask me questions to help me plan my own story about courage — don't write it." |
| Vocabulary | "Give me 50 good words." | "Suggest five precise alternatives to 'happy' and show each in a sentence." |
| Editing | "Rewrite this paragraph for me." | "Point out three weaknesses in this paragraph so I can revise it myself." |
| Comprehension | "Answer this comprehension for me." | "Mark my answer against the question and tell me what I missed." |

## Is Using AI for English Cheating?

**Submitting AI-written work as your own is academic dishonesty, and in English it is also self-defeating.** Beyond the integrity issue, a student who outsources writing never builds the skill. The safe boundary: AI may help you plan, build vocabulary, and review your own draft, but the words you submit must be yours. Many Singapore schools are introducing their own AI-use policies — follow them. It is also worth knowing that [AI-writing detectors are unreliable](https://ancourage.academy/articles/ai-detectors-accuracy-parent-guide-singapore) and can wrongly flag honest work, so they are no substitute for doing your own writing.

## Does AI Replace Reading for English?

**No AI tool replaces wide reading as the foundation of strong English.** Reading builds vocabulary, sentence rhythm, and general knowledge naturally — the raw material good writing draws on. AI can supplement a reading habit with targeted feedback, but it cannot substitute for the years of input that produce a confident writer. Use AI to sharpen what reading has already built.

## How Ancourage Academy Teaches English with AI

**At Ancourage Academy, we use AI to give students more feedback while keeping the writing firmly in their own hands.** Our tutors model how to plan a composition, then show students how AI can stress-test their plan and polish their own draft — never replace it. In [small groups of 3-6](https://ancourage.academy/faq#class-sizes), we can give the personal feedback on voice and ideas that AI cannot.

**Book a [trial class (usually $18) at Bishan](https://ancourage.academy/trial-class/bishan) or [Woodlands](https://ancourage.academy/trial-class/woodlands)**, or read our [guide to AI study tools for students](https://ancourage.academy/articles/ai-study-tools-chatgpt-students-parents-guide-singapore) for the bigger picture.

## How Should Students Pair AI Feedback with Writing Practice?

**AI feedback works best when it is paired with regular, AI-free writing practice.** A student who drafts a composition by hand, asks AI to point out weaknesses in structure and vocabulary, then rewrites it themselves builds skill far faster than one who only reads AI suggestions. The same loop works for comprehension: attempt the passage, use AI to mark your own answers against the question, then redo the ones you missed. This attempt-feedback-redo cycle keeps the effort — and the learning — with the student, while AI simply makes the feedback faster and more detailed than waiting for a marked script to come back.

"AI can tidy your grammar, but it cannot give you your voice," says Archer Yu, who leads Ancourage Academy's AI Workshops. "We teach students to use it as an editor and a sparring partner, never a ghostwriter, so the ideas and the writing stay genuinely theirs."

## Common Questions About Using AI for English

### Is it cheating to use ChatGPT for English homework?

Using AI to brainstorm ideas, build vocabulary, or get feedback on your own draft is legitimate study. Asking it to write your composition or answer your comprehension and submitting that as your own work is academic dishonesty. The test is whether the words you hand in are genuinely yours.

### Can AI improve my child's composition writing?

Indirectly, yes — by helping them plan, suggesting vocabulary in context, and giving feedback on drafts. But improvement comes from the child writing more and revising, not from AI producing polished text. The most effective approach pairs AI feedback with regular AI-free writing practice and wide reading.

### Will markers know if AI wrote a composition?

Experienced markers often recognise the generic voice and uniform phrasing of AI-written text, and many schools now use AI-awareness in marking. More importantly, a student who relies on AI cannot reproduce that writing in the exam hall, where no AI is available — so the gap shows up in results regardless.

### How should students use AI for comprehension?

Attempt the comprehension yourself first, then ask AI to mark your answer against the question and explain what you missed — not to provide the answer. AI can also generate extra inference and vocabulary questions for practice, which builds the active reading skills comprehension papers test.
