# AEP Art Elective Programme Singapore: Complete Parent Guide

The Art Elective Programme (AEP) is offered at 7 secondary schools and 3 JCs in Singapore. How admission works, what students study, and how to prepare.

**The Art Elective Programme (AEP) is a specialised visual arts track offered at select secondary schools and junior colleges in Singapore, designed for students with strong artistic aptitude who want to pursue art at an advanced level alongside their academic studies.** AEP students receive additional art instruction beyond the standard curriculum and are assessed through coursework portfolios and written examinations. This guide draws on portfolio-coaching experience at [Art by Ancourage](https://ancourage.academy/art), where students prepare for AEP and DSA art admissions.

As an art educator with experience preparing students for both [DSA art admissions](https://ancourage.academy/courses/art/dsa) and AEP readiness, I have guided families through the application process and seen what distinguishes successful candidates from the broader applicant pool.

## What Is the Art Elective Programme?

**AEP is a [Ministry of Education programme](https://www.moe.gov.sg/education-in-sg/our-programmes/aep-sec) that provides enhanced art education to students who demonstrate artistic talent and commitment.** It runs at secondary school level (Sec 1–4/5) and JC level (JC1–2), with deeper curriculum coverage than regular Art as a subject.

> "The AEP allows students with artistic potential, aptitude and passion to pursue an in-depth study of art."
>
> — Ministry of Education, Singapore, [Art Elective Programme](https://www.moe.gov.sg/education-in-sg/our-programmes/aep-sec)

AEP students:

- Take G3 Higher Art (secondary) or A-Level Art (JC) with additional enrichment hours
- Develop portfolios across drawing, painting, mixed media, and design
- Attend masterclasses, gallery visits, and artist workshops organised by MOE
- Build critical analysis and art history knowledge beyond the standard syllabus
- Build strong portfolios and critical skills valued in applications to art-related programmes such as those at LASALLE, NAFA, NUS Architecture, and NTU ADM

**The [DSA Art Portfolio programme at Art by Ancourage](https://ancourage.academy/courses/art/dsa) prepares students for AEP entry with portfolio development, technical skill-building, and interview readiness — [book an Art trial class (from $18)](https://ancourage.academy/art) to assess your child's current level.**

## AEP Schools in Singapore

**As of 2026, [7 secondary schools and 3 junior colleges](https://www.moe.gov.sg/education-in-sg/our-programmes/aep-sec/where-to-take-it) offer the Art Elective Programme.**

### Secondary Schools with AEP

- Bukit Panjang Govt. High School
- CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh)
- Hwa Chong Institution
- Nanyang Girls' High School
- National Junior College (also serves as AEP Centre for students not enrolled in AEP schools)
- Victoria School
- Zhonghua Secondary School

### Junior Colleges with AEP

- Hwa Chong Institution
- Nanyang Junior College
- National Junior College

Note: [School of the Arts (SOTA)](https://www.sota.edu.sg) is a separate specialised institution focused entirely on the arts and is not part of AEP, though it serves a similar audience of artistically talented students.

## How to Get Into AEP

**Entry into AEP at secondary school level typically happens through DSA (Direct School Admission) or posting after PSLE, with schools assessing art aptitude through portfolio review and sometimes practical tests or interviews.**

1. **DSA application (May–June):** Students apply to AEP schools through DSA-Sec under the Visual Arts category. This typically requires a portfolio of artworks (the number varies by school — the [AEP Centre pathway asks for 3–5 pieces](https://www.moe.gov.sg/education-in-sg/our-programmes/aep-sec/how-to-join)), an artist statement, and usually an interview or practical test
2. **Post-PSLE posting:** Students posted to AEP schools based on PSLE results may apply for AEP during the school's selection process in January
3. **JC level:** Students apply for AEP at the [beginning of JC1](https://www.moe.gov.sg/education-in-sg/our-programmes/aep-jc) and must attend and pass the school’s selection exercise, which involves short art tasks and a portfolio review. Prior O-Level Art or Higher Art results are not required — the selection assesses artistic potential directly

The key preparation areas are: a strong portfolio demonstrating range and technical skill, the ability to articulate artistic intent, and ideally a track record of sustained art practice (not just a last-minute portfolio).

Students not posted to an AEP school can still access the programme through the [AEP Centre at National Junior College](https://www.moe.gov.sg/education-in-sg/our-programmes/aep-sec/how-to-join), which offers centralised weekly lessons. The 2026 AEP Centre Selection Exercise runs from January to March: applications open in early January, Phase 1 results arrive in mid-February, Phase 2 interviews take place in late February, and final results are released in early March. This pathway is only available at Secondary 1 entry — there is no mid-stream admission.

## How to Prepare Your Child for AEP

**AEP preparation should begin 1–2 years before the application deadline, focusing on building genuine artistic ability rather than cramming portfolio pieces.**

- **Build a diverse portfolio:** AEP schools want to see range — drawing, painting, mixed media, and possibly digital work. At [Art by Ancourage](https://ancourage.academy/courses/art/professional), students work across multiple mediums to develop this breadth
- **Develop observational skills:** Observation drawing (still life, figure, architecture) is a core assessment criterion. Regular practice in [drawing classes](https://ancourage.academy/courses/art/art-classes/drawing-basics) builds this systematically
- **Write an artist statement:** AEP interviews assess whether students can articulate their creative process and artistic influences. This skill is developed through guided reflection during classes
- **Study art history:** Familiarity with major art movements and artists demonstrates genuine interest beyond making pretty pictures
- **Practise interview skills:** AEP interviews may include discussing artwork, responding to visual prompts, or explaining creative choices

The [DSA Art Portfolio track at Art by Ancourage](https://ancourage.academy/courses/art/dsa) covers all these preparation areas in a structured programme designed specifically for secondary school art admissions, including AEP. Our students have been accepted to AEP schools including HCI (new from 2026), NJC, and Victoria School, as part of our [100% acceptance rate](https://ancourage.academy/articles/dsa-art-portfolio-results-acceptance-rate). [Book a trial class (from $18)](https://ancourage.academy/art) to assess your child's current level and discuss a preparation timeline.

## AEP (G3 Higher Art) vs Regular G3 Art

**AEP provides significantly more depth and breadth than regular Art.** From 2027, the [SEC examination](https://ancourage.academy/articles/sec-exam-2027-singapore-new-national-examination) replaces O-Levels — AEP students take G3 Higher Art, which shares common components with G3 Art but includes an additional Higher Art Project assessment. The AEP curriculum, enrichment structure, and portfolio requirements continue under the new framework.

| Feature | Regular G3 Art | AEP (G3 Higher Art) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Instruction hours | Standard curriculum | Enhanced: additional enrichment periods |
| Exposure | School-based only | Gallery visits, masterclasses, artist workshops |
| Portfolio depth | Coursework requirements | Extended portfolio with research and process documentation |
| Peer group | Mixed interest levels | Dedicated cohort of art-focused students |
| Pathway | Subject option | Structured pathway to JC AEP and art university |

## What AEP Students Study

**The AEP curriculum covers practical studio work, art history, and visual analysis at a level deeper than the standard syllabus.**

- **Studio practice:** Drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, digital art
- **Art criticism:** Analysing artworks using formal elements, contextual understanding, and personal interpretation
- **Art history:** Major movements from Renaissance to contemporary, with emphasis on Southeast Asian art
- **Process documentation:** Visual journals showing development from concept to finished work
- **Exhibition and presentation:** AEP schools often organise student exhibitions to develop professional practices

## AEP vs SOTA vs EAP: Which Art Pathway?

**Singapore offers three distinct pathways for artistically talented students, each with different structures, entry points, and outcomes.**

| Feature | AEP | SOTA | EAP |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Full name | Art Elective Programme | [School of the Arts](https://www.sota.edu.sg) | [Enhanced Art Programme](https://www.moe.gov.sg/education-in-sg/our-programmes/eap-sec) |
| Entry point | Secondary 1 (via DSA or posting) | Secondary 1 (via DSA) | Secondary 3 (school-based) |
| Curriculum | G3 Higher Art / A-Level Art + enrichment | IB Diploma or IBCP (full arts focus) | G3 Art + enrichment hours |
| Academic balance | Full academic load + art | Integrated arts and academics | Full academic load + art |
| Portfolio required | Yes (3–5 for AEP Centre; school DSA varies) | Yes (check [SOTA Preparation Notes](https://www.sota.edu.sg/talent-academy/dsa-secondary/) each year) | Varies by school |
| Best for | Art-strong students wanting academic breadth | Students committed to full-time arts education | Late bloomers discovering art at Secondary 3 |

Students who discover their artistic passion later in secondary school should explore EAP, which begins at Secondary 3 in participating schools. For those certain about art from Primary 5–6, AEP or SOTA via DSA is the stronger pathway. The [DSA Portfolio programme at Art by Ancourage](https://ancourage.academy/courses/art/dsa) prepares students for all three entry routes.

## Is AEP Right for Your Child?

**AEP suits students who are genuinely passionate about visual arts and willing to commit significant time to their practice alongside academics.**

Consider AEP if your child:

- Draws, paints, or creates art voluntarily and regularly — not just during school art lessons
- Is curious about art history, gallery visits, and what makes artwork meaningful
- Can handle the additional workload of enhanced art instruction alongside regular academics
- Has long-term interest in art-related careers (design, architecture, fine art, animation, art education)

If your child enjoys art but is unsure about the commitment level, starting with regular art enrichment — [School Art Programme](https://ancourage.academy/courses/art/school-programme/primary) or [Explorative classes](https://ancourage.academy/courses/art/explorative) at Art by Ancourage — can help gauge their readiness before applying. Many successful AEP students began with general art enrichment before transitioning to focused portfolio preparation in Primary 4 or 5.

## Common Questions About AEP

### Can my child take AEP and still focus on academics?

Yes. AEP is designed to run alongside the standard academic curriculum. However, it does require additional time for art practice and portfolio development. Students who manage their time well handle both successfully — many AEP graduates score well in both art and academic subjects.

### Does AEP guarantee entry into art university?

AEP does not guarantee admission to any university, but it provides a strong portfolio, art history knowledge, and critical thinking skills that strengthen applications to LASALLE, NAFA, NUS Architecture, NTU ADM, and overseas art institutions.

### When should preparation for AEP start?

Ideally, students start building their portfolio in Primary 4 or 5, giving 1–2 years before the DSA application in Primary 6. The [DSA Portfolio programme at Art by Ancourage](https://ancourage.academy/courses/art/dsa) structures this preparation into a clear timeline with milestone reviews.

### Can my child transfer into AEP after Secondary 1?

Generally no — the AEP is a 4-year programme and [the standard enrolment is at the start of Secondary 1](https://www.moe.gov.sg/education-in-sg/our-programmes/aep-sec) through the AEP Selection Exercise. There is no mid-stream entry at the AEP Centre or at most AEP schools. However, [NJC’s Junior High AEP](https://www.nationaljc.moe.edu.sg/art-elective-programme/junior-high-aep/) may invite selected non-AEP JH2 students to join the programme from JH3 to JH4 based on demonstrated interest and potential. Students who develop an interest in art later can also consider the [Enhanced Art Programme (EAP)](https://www.moe.gov.sg/education-in-sg/our-programmes/eap-sec), which begins at Secondary 3 in participating schools. Starting preparation early and entering AEP through DSA or the Secondary 1 intake remains the most reliable route.
